The chickens are just fine being raised the way they are. I’ve been raised in the city and I know that. If they weren’t happy they wouldn’t be laying eggs like they are and they would be losing feathers and egg shells wouldn’t be as pretty as they are. If you only have criticism comments go elsewhere. Justin and Rebecca are doing what works for them. I have learned so much from them and their RUclips community. They are human after all.

Amen Regina Gibson! I have enjoyed every single video Justin Rhodes ever made and I think it’s because I really respect him as a farmer, entrepreneur, creator, and human. What I don’t enjoy is the recent onslaught of negative comments.

I save the tube of toilet paper. I cut in half, fil with potting soil, place on a tray. Add seeds and water. I leave them on the tray until ready to transplant. I plant them in the tube right in the ground. The tube disappears and I have a beautiful garden.

      @jaket8947 4 месяца назад

It doesn't, that's an absurdly high guesstimate. Most cut produce will lose 20-30% of it's value by 3 days after harvest and up to around 45% by the time it reaches your local grocer. That's accounting for cross-country trucking of out of season veggies. So, while it's better to grow your own of stuff you eat a lot of, it's also advantageous to either freeze or can because it will retain more nutritional value.

Ms. Rhodes, are looking for a rose that will do well for your farm? I am a consulting rosarian but I live in extreme No. Calif. near Oregon. I know what kind of roses do well around here. I would recommend you calling your local rose society and ask that a Consulting Rosarian come by your farm if you want. You can even tell them where you want to plant a climber or whatever and they can tell you the best, disease resistant, fragrant rose for the job. God bless your new home.

I love how you’re saying it has taken you 19 years.
Each year I get what my budget allows on starting seeds. Whenever that gets all used up, I get the solo cups. Do I love it? Not really. But it is what I can do and I’d rather grow more of my food and start it in a solo cup than to not grow it at all. And guess what?! I’m almost where I don’t have to do the solo cups anymore. I’m just content with what I can do and each year I’ll keep adding more. My trellis system works the same way. With a large family, I need a lot, but I add a little at a time. And by the end, it will be my happy place and look great!

How are you able to do a remodel and have a garden? Correct answer is with the help of my lovely hired farm hand. Just saying, from what I have seen she has been a HUGE help. Pepper seeds need for the soil to be a specific temperature. Heat mats help. All of my sweet pepper types sprouted within a week of sitting on top of a heat mat. Those pepper seeds should eventually sprout. Slow process without heat mat. Good Luck and Happy Gardening. Also, Thank you Rebecca for the honesty of telling people to find what works for them. It is good to take in the info people/influencers tell you as inspiration and feedback on products you might be able to afford, but again, everyone must find what works for them.

Rebecca, as I understand it celery does best if it is grown in marshy areas. They love water. When you think they have enough, water them again. Because of that they are best grown away from other plants that don't like wet feet. If your celery was too strong tasting they might have been wanting more water. Might want to try more than one variety.

What is the thought for the future with the kids, at one time they will leave the house i think?

They ve got 2 cabins on their land if any of them want to stay but want their own space plus they have land right there they can build on. And they may just decide they want to be completely on their own. Justin and Rebekah will adjust to that just as the rest of us do.

Oh, also, a couple of Justin's statements don't exactly apply, or need some adjusting, for winters up north here. In Dunn co. Wisconsin for ex. , u probably cannot get away from having to clean out your chicken manure (by "hand" or machine) from the winter deep bedding. And u may not want a very high ceiling and no walls on your barn, although yes, cattle and horses at least, can grow a sufficient winter coat (if exposed to the outdoors/ temps enough going into winter), to not need a barn per se. But they may need serious wind protection. If they're not free to roam the countryside and find a sheltered spot, you have to provide it. I dairy farmer on a ridge w my family in the 80s, 90s & 2000s. The bad spell in Feb. of '96 for ex. ... . The 4-plus weeks it stayed below zero and nights about -25 below about the whole time If I remember right, sometime around 2012 or so. It's essential to learn that chickens and prob. all livestock, need ventilation more than anything, but I know that a cold draft isn't good either... . It's a huge challenge and I don't have animals right now/much since then, so, haven't fig. that all out yet

Harvested my last romaine lettuce until I replant next month in MO for my fall garden.Cabbage almost done and preserving them. Rebecca look into the Rampicante Italian zucchini squash. Off Grid with Doug and Stacy use it as a winter squash and it’s ready to reseed your spring crop if you have some left by then

On the seed starting stuff. I'm interested in those silicone things for times I want to use something besides soil blocks for whatever reason, although I also do still have a lot of various sizes of reused things from having bought veg, to use as well. But I mainly use soil blocks and overall do ok w em. Not as great as Jim Kovaleski or Jesse Frost and that's my goal. Personally, the reason TO use them has nothing to do w plastic use ( although I'm all for that). It is for the air pruning & less transplant shock, without having to buy "cow" or peat pots etc. . Those last 2, I had a LOT of trouble w after transplanting. Apparently u need to be SURE to bury the top edge of the thing well, or they wick water away &/or make it harder for those to break down/let the roots out more, which also didn't always happen well. But esp. the drying out. For the soil blocks, I like bottom watering per my set up and talent and needs, so I want to invest in the sturdier, solid bottom trays. I got the cheaper ones along w the mesh tray-liners to set the blocks in/on from Johnny's and the bottom trays are breaking badly now, 2 or so seasons in ( & that's with my being fairly careful, and them not being in the sun all that much). But one can also use boot trays (or other sim. ideas) to bottom water stuff. I pinned it due to moving and space to use em where I am now, but had been making wood trays for em ( Soil Blocks. Planned on gentle spray watering like u guys & others). Was using free 2x s I'd inherited and making 3 sided frame - open on one to access blocks better for removal and just cuz - and lining bottom w hardware cloth. Seems great, the lil I've used the one I finished.
But yes, 100 % agree that everyone needs to figure out things that work for them for now for where they're at and etc. !

Fresh peas and other vegetables from the garden for meals or on the side is the best! I think and hope more people are realizing that grocery store produce and meats are substantially less nutritious than a home garden or farmer’s market. And that’s not even counting the chemicals, wax, and who knows what that’s on and in foods from the grocery stores. We all should strive to grow or buy as many ingredients from local farmers. The better we eat the better our health, hospital bills are outrageous.

I had lots of tomato seeds that would not come up, I put them outside because I had some in the same tray that did..well do you know those came up a week after putting them outside. I don’t know what the issue was but they were started close to a MONTH. I have it noted which ones for next year, I’m also waiting to see if anyone else had issues with this company’s seeds this year. I’m not blasting them on here. I’m looking forward to my Cranberry beans ( also called October)this year..

Okra is such a high maintenance veg... needs harvesting 2x a day. I would find some space for that in the kitchen garden. Totally unsolicited advice 😂❤

There is no way realistically you will quit the grocery store. You will order items online which is the same thing. Our US culture and tastes you are used to will win out. Plus you do not cook everything from scratch every day. It’s not in your family routines which dictate food choices and preservation long term. You do not grow enough fruits and vegetables to sustain your family. You do a lot especially with proteins and milk though. I’m not trying to be negative but realistic. But working towards that goal is better than not trying.

nasturtiums are peppery flavored, everything is edible including the seed pods (you can put it in your pepper mill) use less than the pepper corns. The leaves are the least peppery. Instead of imported pepper corns.

How can you start tomatoes now???
I have to start mine inside in January to be able to start to harvest a little bit in late July . Then it’s game on to get the most of them in august before the frost. Frost can also come in early august , so I never get a a good harvest😢
