Hey Mark, if you happen to be sitting at the computer some day or evening and looking down at the comments. . . . Back in the day I had a paper route. First thing I did with the money was open a bank account. Mother made me. Second thing I did was buy a Dire Straits album. Played it til the tape fell out of the cassette. Now here I am an older dude, still listening. And I've got my own Juliet. A decade later and she still haunts my dreams. This is one of those songs where I stop playing along on my guitar and just listen. Take care, man. Great work, as always.

In the section between 3:20 and 3:45, the song slows to a softer beat, and Mark’s demeanor seems to suddenly become more somber. His voice takes on a huskier tone; his eyes grow softer and more contemplative; and the moment when head slightly tilted, his mouth strains with nearly uncontrolled emotion. This is what I love most about Mark Knopfler. He doesn’t just mouth words, he lives them. There are only a number of musicians I regret not having had the chance to go see perform live. Mark is on the top of that list.

I'd read that he wrote the song about his girlfriend of the time who heartlessly dumped him and hurt his heart... but when he's singing the song these many years later he seems to be feeling the lyrics emotionally, getting teary-eyed.
My take on that is not that he's remembering the girl from almost 20 years before, but likely that he was going through a painful divorce at the time.

I had the opportunity to see Mark and this band (mostly) perform here in Winnipeg at our Concert Hall. I went with a few friends and my wife. To this day we talk about that experience and agree it was the best live concert we've ever attended, bar none.

@@katiezee2 The girlfriend at the time was Holly Vincent. He does get very emotional when he sings this song, and I agree it can't be about the break-up from 20 years ago. So you make a good point that he might have been going through a painful divorce with his ex-wife, Lourdes. Does anyone know why they got divorced? I remember reading at the time they supposedly had a solid marriage so people were surprised about the divorce. I am happy for Mark that he certainly seems to have a happy marriage with Kitty. He is awesome and deserves to be happy.

Even after all these years Mark Knopfler sings this song with the same feeling and it feels so fresh. I just cannot imagine the pain he must have gone through while writing this song and playing those tasty licks. Especially 5:08 part hits me right in the feels everytime. He is my God.🙌

I always thought this was the best version of this song, live or studio, and I hadn't heard it in a long time and just listen to it and I still think that. Between the incredible sound and tone of that old national he plays, and the feeling he puts into this, together, it just all works right!

I think the pianist adds so much to their songs. Take nothing away from anything else, but the piano makes it so much more emotional. At least to me. Cheers

"...and all I do is miss you, the way we used to be..." How many times has he sung that line and yet you can see that someone is still clearly on his mind when he sings this. Powerful emotive stuff here... a true master.

Yes, you know that he's got a specific Juliet who still haunts him. Seems like I read that he married his third wife--who he is still married to today in 2019--in 96 or 97. I know I have a Romeo--more than one, for sure... That song just busts me up inside!

I fell in love with this song sometime in the early 80's when I actually heard it on German radio somewhere in the Frankfurt area, I fell in love with so many of his/their songs over the years. I waited until my late 30's to find the right woman, my Juliet... 8 years later, after I came down with a life altering degenerative nerve disease it came to an abrupt end. I had discovered this version just a week or so before we split... This version is so beautiful, so mournful, so gut wrenching if you have lived it. I miss her every waking moment of every day, but the time was truly wrong for us...

This is about his “relationship” he had years ago with Holly Beth Vincent of “Holly and the Italians” band. She treated him really bad. She used him to help her fame, then dumped him, over the phone while he was on tour in the USA. She did an interview and was asked about her relationship with Mark and she said “I had a scene with him but it got to the point he couldn’t handle it so I broke up with him”. That’s where the verse in Mark’s song “yeah I had a scene with him” originated from.

I was enrolled in a Massachusetts college from 79 to 83 and fell in love and got my heart broken over and over again. After one of the more devastating separations I would play this song on my turntable over and over again lamenting on how much of an idiot I was to lose her. This song pulled me apart, but sometimes you need someone to be lonely with and a song fills the void. This one in particular brings me back to that off campus house and my roommates yelling in vain " will you shut that melancholy crap off for crying out loud, and snap out of it"
I've loved this song for so long.
