  • The president of the United Steelworkers labor union sat down exclusively with WTAE anchor Michelle Wright Friday. David McCall weighed in on the expected visit to Pittsburgh by Nippon Steel Vice President Takahiro Mori next week and explained why the two likely won't be meeting.
Below is a response from U.S. Steel:
USW leaders claim they were "surprised" by the announcement that U.S. Steel was being sold but ignore the direct role they played in forcing a sale.
The USW leadership joined with Cleveland-Cliffs to push for a sale of U.S. Steel - all before the company publicly announced the strategic alternatives review process.
The USW then assigned its right to participate in the review process to Cleveland-Cliffs.
The transaction the USW preferred and pursued - a sale to Cleveland-Cliffs - would have triggered substantially the same payments to executives that the USW now claims to be against while forcing the breakup of U.S. Steel.
USW leaders complain they do not have a seat at the table but refuse to engage with Nippon Steel despite repeated good-faith efforts to engage in productive discussions. - In depth records of those communications efforts here
Nippon Steel and its representatives have reached out more than a dozen times to meet in person with USW International leadership since the transaction was announced, efforts that the USW leadership have largely ignored.
Nippon Steel made commitments related to significant investments in technology and R&D, job security, trade protections and more. Contracts require two parties to be effective, and the USW has not shown up.
WTAE is working on a follow-up interview with U.S. Steel to comment on these claims.
