Just the question I wanted answered. I don't own either and have been racking my brain trying to decide which is best for my needs. Thanks for the information. Very helpful
Thankyou for the Live yesterday. I was looking for the Tim Holtz candy box tutorial which Your Tri-fold card was beautiful. I came across this Tutorial and I had to watch because your (live) audience were talking about the cuddle bug and how much they love it. Your Purple ring is'nt on. LOL its 14yrs later. I love your Tutorials
Thanks for this video. I have been trying to decide between the two. I was leaning toward the Cuttlebug and now I can decide. It will be the Cuttlebug. Thanks so much.
I have a Big Kick and a Cuttle Bug and would not part with either one! As for the bowed plate, I flip it to a different side each time I use it and if you leave it and all the plates in the machine with the bowed side up it helps to straighten it. Thank-you for the information.
I have a Cuttlebug and was contemplating purchasing a Big Shot. I am convinced that I don't need one now! Thanks!! I'm glad Provo Craft is going to come out with some extended plates. I'm sure they'll come out with some extended embossing folders too! YAY!! LOVE IT! Thank you for your review, it was MOST helpful!! :O)
I use my b-plate (the one I cut into) on both sides regularly. That way the plate keeps pretty straight. If it starts to get warped, just turn it around.
I just bought a CB and it did not come with a C-plate. I now own both a CB and a Big Shot and if I was limited to only one, I would keep the Big Shot, so I think that it is a person by person preference. Happily I do not have to choose just one and can enjoy the strengths of each one depending on the job to be done.
I'm now going to buy the Cuttlebug have been thinking about the bigshot but you have changed my mind but for the better option lol. Thank you for sharing xx
Thank you so much for this video! I have a Cuttlebug, but I've been wondering about the Sizzix/Vintaj. And your video has cemented my decision to get a one--cutting chipboard is very important to me!
I found this old video of yours today. I totally agree with you. I loved my Cuttlebug and still have one and all the plates as a back up for my Spellbinders Platinum Six. I only purchased the Platinum Six because the cuttlebug opening was not large enough for some of my embossing folders, once they started making them bigger. I do love my platinum six, but the cuttlebug will always be first in my heart! As for the Big Shot-never liked it, would not have it! Just thought you might get a kick out of a comment from one of your older videos😅.
Thanks for such a detailed review. I think I'm going with the cuttlebug since I don't have space for the big shot and it seems that they do similar things. (except for some materials) I am a beginner and am really getting into paper crafting. I think the cuttlebug is a good way to start.
Hi, I saw on RUclips that you can heat your plates up and they will go back in place. Also it work on your acrylic blocks helps takes the lines out so you might want to give that a try to see if the heat will bend it back in place
I've tried it and won't do it again. The plates aren't meant to be heated like that and the smell is awful, these items aren't meant to be subjected to high heat and I definitely do not recommend it.
I have the cuttlebug & love it. The only reason I would buy another cutter is if they come out with a wider. I make a lot of 6x6"cards & sometimes I can't emboss the entire width of the card cause not all the embossing folders have a texture that enables you to move the paper & match the design. Larger embossing folders would need to be available. I love your work & watch your blogs all the time. Would love to have a Michaels or Joannes in Australia, not a lot of scrappin options here.
@FirstClassThiefRikku I got it for free because of all the hostess benefits I earned through a Stampin' Up workshop - I used those benefits to get the Big Shot instead of other product in the catalogue.
good video as i was trying to decide which one to get.. as i'm not looking to cut with large dies.. just simple small ones ☺ at this time i'm leaning towards cuttlebug ☺
Check out the Frugal Crafter's video on straightening and cleaning your plates (Big Shot). It also helps to straighten them if you flip them over and run it through where it pushes the bend down. This is what I do with mine to help my plates be straighter. The mark your Nestabilities dies are leaving on your cut image happens to do with where the cutting edge is positioned on the die (when run through the Big Shot). Stampin' Up! TM does carry some dies that are similar to the Nestabilities dies. Usually, the dies I've seen through Stampin Up! TM (made by Sizzix TM) have the cutting edge on the inner-most edge of the die instead of the outer. So the paper you are cutting an image out of gets a little embossed edge from cutting out the shape. I am guessing the Big Shot puts more pressure on things when run through than the Cuttlebug. I've never used a Cuttlebug before so I can't really speak much on its performance. I agree, the Big Shot is a moose compared to the Cuttlebug. I like the way you can fold up the Cuttlebug.
I love the CB too! I use the Nestabilities dies as well but must be doing it wrong because I always get the embossing in every cut. What sandwich you use for those? I also wanted to ask what sandwich you cut chipboard with? I am hesitant to try because I think I will break the machine. :) Thanks for all the info. Love your work.
Thanks for this! I just got a brand new one for $40 at a garage sale and was wondering if I would be better off with a Big Shot but I will keep it now!
Thank you !!!!.... I have been trying to decide which of these to buy. . I had gotten a Cricket...but hardly ever used it..so I sold it. I don't miss it ..it was waaay to complicated. But watching all these card making videos...I want one. Thanks for making up my mind.
I have a laser engraver, which cuts anything except polymer stuff, so I didn't think I needed another cutter. I have a Cricut. Then I got sold on the Big Shot, which I was not having much success with -- plate this, plate that... until I found some dies from Cuttlebug, which work great in the Big Shot. Now I wish I had bought the Cuttlebug instead!
I also found the longer plates at Joanne's and I heard they are comming out with longer embossing folders and dies also. I don't cut much with mine I use my cricut but I love to emboss and I love the compact design I keep it in a file tote worth the plates. Easy to lug and everything in one spot! Thanks for sharing I sent this to friends to help them decide!;)
I just found this and I'm so glad. I just investing in a CB and was originally going to buy the grand calibur - but since I don't do 12x12 anything, didn't think it was necessary. Do you still feel the same today as I see this vid is almost 3 yrs old now? tfs - be blessed ;D
thanks for the video...i'm planning on buying my first machine, so was v. confused about wh/ one to choose..however, it depends i think on what you're using those machines for..i'm planning on cutting fabric so i think it the BS might be better for it, esp cuz it's got a larger platform. I hope i'm right :)
well hello scrapper I like the way you explained the diff, now since you prefer the cuttlebug, would you be willing to pass up your BigShot to some1 in need.. thanks soo much for sharing**Letty**
I didn't know you were in Canada! I did a lot of research before deciding on the Big Kick...which is just like the Big Shot but the only one available in our Canadian Michaels store. There was a dispute between the designers. They parted, each taking it with different names. I LOVE the Big Kick!! But space isn't an issue for me so I understand your point. I also really needed it to cut chipboard and the Big Kick cuts it like butter! Great video for those that are trying to decide! :o)
Unfortunately, the CB doesn't come with the C plate anymore. I thought they had forgotten mine when I bought it recently and then when I read the box I realized that they actually hadn't forgotten it; it's sold separately. Don't know why they did that...economy maybe?
I find the bigshot way mor sturdy, and secure than the cuttlebug... and I find the cuttlebug easier to "break" (something inside)... i just LOVE the bigshot!
Thanks for doing a video on this comparison! I've had a Cuttlebug FOREVER, love it and recommend it to everyone. I think it's my favorite/most used tool... besides my paper trimmer! :) I went to an SU! party and of course they were raving about the Big Shot... that is their job I guess! HA! They now make a long platform and the plates for the Cuttlebug so I just bought them off Joann's website. Super psyched because they were on sale for $11.99 each and I got free shipping. Whoot!!!
@teatanya yes it will work with Bigz dies - I had mentioned that but I prolly cut it out when I edited it so I added it in as a note. You just use 2 B plates.
thank you for sharing! I am desperately trying to decide between the 2. I only have the original sizzix and there are dies and folders that won't fit in it. Hard to choose!!
The BS has the multi-purpose platform, is that something important to have or can the CB do the same without it? I really want to buy my first one but am having a hard time choosing, I'm leaning towards the bug because of lack of space. Also can you still get the BS for free or was that a expired deal?
I have a Cricut Expression and Make The Cut software, so the only thing I want a Cuttlebug or Big Shot for is embossing with the large Fiskars plates I own. My tendinitis makes using the burnishing tool with those plates very painful, so I'd like a machine I can use for this. Which would you recommend, considering I don't really need to do diecutting with whatever I get?
I was thinking of getting a bigshot for cutting chipboard..... the cuttle bug won't cut through chipboard will it? You have to use the bigz dies to cut chipboard on the bigshot, will they work with the bug?
Nice video and thanks for the information! Just a random comment and question...the wall color is so pretty! Do you know what brand and name of paint you used? :)
Thankyou for this video...I'm actually trying to decide b/n the 2. With the Cuttlebug, do I need to also purchase a rubber mat or something to use when embossing?
Thanks for helping me with my decision I have a Cricut imagine which is amazing but I have been thinking about the cuttlebug for some time now. I have the embossing boutique but it only embosses and I want to move on. I will probably order this afternoon. Thanks!
I use my Big Shot most of the time now - but still have both machines and have no desire to get anything else - like the Grand Calibur - I don't do 12x12 either so it's not worth it for me!
Hello, first i'd like to say thank you for your time... it really helps that you explained in detail what each machine does. I am a newbie to be and love the idea of stamping and embossing and die cutting, I haven't yet purchased a machine i'm just checking out different views. I do want to ask you do you have any advice or tips for me not quite starting out but close to it.
I'm still trying to figure out what I want. I have a cricut machine I just want something to dry emboss. I like how the big shot is easy to make sandwiches. Is it really that confusing making sandwiches with the cuttle bug? And I was wondering I watched one lady use the big shot to cut with nestiblities and she said you must cut the shape blade side up. I'm not sure how you'd done yours, sorry trying to help. Thank you for sharing your thoughts it's helping me weigh out the differences.
cool vid but got to say bigshot all the way but then in the UK both machines are easy to get plus any replacemnts as for you nesty dies if you flip tab 1 over and use a cople of card shims then you will get the cut without any embossing xxx
thanks for adding closed captioning to your video. Deaf people depend on captions. However, did you pay for these captions? Did you check accuracy? I cannot make sense out of what you are talking about? Why cant captions be accurate or even 'guessable'.....
I don't own any die cut machine, but after seeing a few videos about die cutting, it look quite amazing. Does it worth the investment? I don't really know much about die cutting except about Cricut which is a crazy best invention for the crafting world. However, it comes with the cost which is too much. Then it needs the addition software for more images. I just don't know though. I want to own Cricut someday hahaha, but still wonder should I try out die cutting first
Since this comparison is over 3 yrs old, do you still feel the same way? Does your Cuttlebug still cut and emboss as good as your Big Shot after a few Years? Thank you.
It still works just fine. I use my Big Shot exclusively now as I no longer care if my dies cut and emboss the edges at the same time b/c the sandwich is tighter (easily fixable but I don't even bother). I still say it's just personal preference and whatever is easily available as they're both great machines.
I think it was b/c back then I used to always use just Spellbinders dies and I liked being able to just cut (and not cut AND emboss) using the CuttleBug - my Big Shot would cut and emboss b/c it gives more pressure. It boiled down to laziness LOL. I don't use Spellbinders dies as much anymore so the cutting and embossing "issue" really isn't one anymore ;)
This was helpful. I just recently got introduced to the CB and Big Shot. I've been watching videos on YT to see how to use them and pros/cons Thank you :)
Can anyone recommed which one is best for cutting chipboard? I am leaning more towards the cuttlebug, due to space and great reviews, however if it doesn't cut chipboard it's a moo point. Thanks in advance :)
Can you tell me if there's a way to not get the stitching design on a design that has it on there? I have a sun that has the annoying stitch design in a circle in the middle of the die, and I just want to cut the sun shape.
+Zoila Rivera I have a CuttleBug and a Cricut Explore. I had a Cricut Expression die cut machine for 4 years. Love all that the Circuit can do! And NOTHING beats all that it does. However, sometimes I find many projects that are so wonderful with a hand-cranked die cutter. I've decided after 4 years to get rid of my CuttleBug and get the new Big Shot Plus. I especially love embossed papers and images for cards. So that's why I'll always have a hand-cranked die cutter.
+Melissa Edwards I can't answer that sorry I don't have my CB or the plates anymore so I can't try it to see. I kind of doubt they'll work without a lot of shims and whatnot b/c they're meant for the CB machine and that's a different manufacturer than the Big Shot.
Thank you so much, this is so helpful! I am wanting to get started with craft, it's a great creative outlet, and your video has greatly aided in my decision! :-)
I love my cuttlebug, I would not get anything else, and I can use my spellbinder dies too with the cuttlebug, it's easy to carry, no need for electricity, and you don't need to connect it to the computer, I would not get rid of mine, never!!
sturdier and for a while replacement cutting pads weren't available for the CB and by the time they were again I'd been using the BS for so long I just stopped using the CB and eventually sold it
Just the question I wanted answered. I don't own either and have been racking my brain trying to decide which is best for my needs. Thanks for the information. Very helpful

it's nice to see a video about the good points for buying a cuttlebug... now the debate is more well-rounded. thanks!
I use my b-plate (the one I cut into) on both sides regularly. That way the plate keeps pretty straight. If it starts to get warped, just turn it around.
Interesting comparison! I didn't know much about big shot, but I am very happy with my cuttlebug!
Thank you very much! I have not bought either yet but now I really want the currlebug.
The video is not choppy, it's perfect!
Hi You can now get the extended dies for the Cuttlebug. I do have success using the bigz on my Cuttlebug.
I also remember the plates for the cuttlebug by "C" for cutting and "B" for emBossing.
I just bought a CB and it did not come with a C-plate. I now own both a CB and a Big Shot and if I was limited to only one, I would keep the Big Shot, so I think that it is a person by person preference. I'm thinking about to buy one of them. Your comments are very helpful! :* :-)) Thx a lot!
I have big/long plates for the cuttlebug. I live in Norway in capitol of Oslo !
Thanks for doing this. I have been trying to decide. Your videos have been best for making that decision.
HA! I want to buy one of these to cut Fabric and Felt.... in your opinion, which one will work best for my needs?
Thans!! :)
@teatanya yes it will work with Bigz dies - I had mentioned that but I prolly cut it out when I edited it so I added it in as a note. You just use 2 B plates.
I just ordered a cuttlebug. Thanks for the info. Can't wait to get it.
thank you for sharing! I am desperately trying to decide between the 2. I only have the original sizzix and there are dies and folders that won't fit in it. Hard to choose!!
Can the Cuttlebug cut BIGZ dies? I'm sorry for asking if you already mentioned it. TFS!
Thanks!
Thanks for your sharing. May I know which one can do the biggest craft?
I use my Big Shot most of the time now - but still have both machines and have no desire to get anything else - like the Grand Calibur - I don't do 12x12 either so it's not worth it for me!
Thank you for this, you just answered 90% of my questions! Will the Cuttlebug handle 4.75 inch dies?
Hello, first i'd like to say thank you for your time... it really helps that you explained in detail what each machine does. I am a newbie to be and love the idea of stamping and embossing and die cutting, I haven't yet purchased a machine i'm just checking out different views. I do want to ask you do you have any advice or tips for me not quite starting out but close to it.
They make extended plates for the cuttle bug, I have them!
@sarah20az I forgot to add that info so I added it as a note at 7:00 :)
I've been wanting to know the difference. This has helped me a lot. Thx!
Do you have the cricket? if you do can you do a review
how is the cuttlebug at cutting felt?
@terrybriody a small handful of people are able to. Most of us (including myself) do it because it's a hobby and we enjoy it. :)
cool vid but got to say bigshot all the way but then in the UK both machines are easy to get plus any replacemnts as for you nesty dies if you flip tab 1 over and use a cople of card shims then you will get the cut without any embossing xxx
@POLKADOTSCRAFTS1 it should be able to - I've never tried it but I'm guessing it would.
thanks for adding closed captioning to your video. Deaf people depend on captions. However, did you pay for these captions? Did you check accuracy? I cannot make sense out of what you are talking about? Why cant captions be accurate or even 'guessable'.....
The close captioning is a RUclips automated thing so I have no control over it sorry!
+sandra solak I know, that is so annoying. I am not deaf but I am hoh and the cc help.
Sorry i don't understand English.
Is better bigshot or cuttlebug?
I don't own any die cut machine, but after seeing a few videos about die cutting, it look quite amazing. Does it worth the investment? I don't really know much about die cutting except about Cricut which is a crazy best invention for the crafting world. However, it comes with the cost which is too much. One of the recent comments says you use the Big Shot now, can you tell me why you changed to using the Big Shot more? Thanks
I think it was b/c back then I used to always use just Spellbinders dies and I liked being able to just cut (and not cut AND emboss) using the CuttleBug - my Big Shot would cut and emboss b/c it gives more pressure. Can you use the magnetic plate in the CB?
This was helpful. I just recently got introduced to the CB and Big Shot. I've been watching videos on YT to see how to use them and pros/cons
Thank you :)
Can anyone recommed which one is best for cutting chipboard? I am leaning more towards the cuttlebug, due to space and great reviews, however if it doesn't cut chipboard it's a moo point. Thanks in advance :)
Thanks for the video helped me a lot to decide which one i will get!
Can you tell me if there's a way to not get the stitching design on a design that has it on there? I have a sun that has the annoying stitch design in a circle in the middle of the die, and I just want to cut the sun shape.
Prairie Paper & Ink (AmyR) Thanks, I'll do that!
Loved your video!!! I am a newbie and don't have too much yet! Thanks for all the wisdom and information. Thanks for sharing :)
+Sherrie Johnson "THANK YOU SO MUCH SHERRIE"
Can you use the Cuttlebug plates in the BigShot when you don't want to emboss?
+Melissa Edwards I can't answer that sorry I don't have my CB or the plates anymore so I can't try it to see. I kind of doubt they'll work without a lot of shims and whatnot b/c they're meant for the CB machine and that's a different manufacturer than the Big Shot.
@KarinJoan Hi ! I have long/big plates for the cuttlebug. I live in Norway in the capitol of oslo
I think there are some already.. well releasing at CHA.... I think that's what I saw..
can u use embosing dies on the cuttle bug
I have the cuttlebug and I LOVE IT!!
Also does anyone know will the Sizzix Scoreboards XL Dies work with the cuttlebug? Thank you in advance!
i agree but i have... drum roll please the new cuttle bug
I use thin card rather than the top acrylic sheet so it wont emboss
I have the cuttlebug but want the bigshot to cut chipboard..
Thank you so much, this is so helpful! I am wanting to get started with craft, it's a great creative outlet, and your video has greatly aided in my decision! :-)
i guess I'm kinda off topic but does anybody know a good site to watch new tv shows online ?
@Emmanuel Grey flixportal :P
@Payton Rohan thanks, I signed up and it seems to work :D I really appreciate it!!
@Emmanuel Grey glad I could help =)
A born Star!
Does anyone manage to make a living from doing these crafts?
Agree- Cuddlebug is better than the BIg Shot.
Thanks for the video. Your info much appreciated.
I love my cuttlebug, I would not get anything else, and I can use my spellbinder dies too with the cuttlebug, it's easy to carry, no need for electricity, and you don't need to connect it to the computer, I would not get rid of mine, never!!
Amy I always see you using the big shot instead of the cuttlebug what made you change your mind?
sturdier and for a while replacement cutting pads weren't available for the CB and by the time they were again I'd been using the BS for so long I just stopped using the CB and eventually sold it
Behr paint - it was a custom colour match so no name sorry!
