The funny thing is that at first we feel hatred towards the oni, but then when you look into their past, what happened and what they had to go through to be where they are today, the anger ends...The anger turns into pity and sadness, you end up sympathizing with the characters, it makes us wonder that if something better had happened to them, maybe they wouldn't be in this situation.

Also, Gyutaro also explains how guilty he feels about teaching her all those bad manners, how she could had been better if he had a better tutor and that. In the end, no matter what, they stay together to face their own sins.
I felt sorry for Rui because he was a child and didn't know what he was doing and felt sorry for his actions. But Gyutaro is one of the most hated characters for me because he kills people just because his life turned out shit, tough.
