I like it a lot as well. It appeared rather out of the blue for me just as I was finding myself wanting a lightweight, flexible diagramming tool. I have been using Scapple on and off for this but having a native Apple tool across both macOS and i(pad)os is great. I would also prefer a more flexible palette but for a V1 release I'm very pleased with it!

Apple needs to add to the Freeform App across Apple devices, the ability to snap shapes drawn with pencil of with hand.
That is such an important feature!
Its sort of a whiteboard app with exactly NONE of the features people would expect of such an app. No hyperlinks, no node/edge org chart or network diagraming. No shape hinting (you know where you draw a "freeform" shape and the app cleans it up into a platonic rectangle, square, circle, oval, star, moon, arrow, sun, person, plant, car, etc). No object recognition. No semantic or search features. There are sticky notes but when you write on them, your writing doesn't stick to the note so when you move the note, the writing floats where it was. No math and equation solver or formatter, no tables, no charts, no dimensional drawings, no metadata, no alternative views (page, table, scrolling, list, portfolio, timeline, graph, semantic, word cloud, etc.). No creation or edit or browse history slider. No record for show functionality. No output to presentation. No audio (lecture) recording tied to note taking (so you can click on a part of your notes and have the audio play back from the moment in the lecture that was recorded when you drew that part of your notes). No background web searches and content suggestions. No cloud publishing and public sharing. No geographic parsing (location relationship mapping). No finder integration. No collections. No list or task or event or group or calendar awareness. No associative awareness (doesn't store proximity information).
Those would all be nice to have features, but I’m more disappointed about the fact that it doesn’t make me coffee, it doesn’t water my plants and it can’t even pick up my kids from school.

you do know there is a group feature. you can simply group the writing to the sticky notes. pretty sure you would be complaining if you wanted to move your writing independently of the sticky note afterwards for whatever reason. I Prefer to group it. That's full freedom. However I agree about the shape hinting. we should've been able to long hold for cleaner lines.
So which app has all the features you listed in one App, point me in that direction

Awesome, THANKS for making a great, clear video about Freeform. Really, really appreciate it. This app seems like a good first step. Hop Apple hears your comments. One additional thing that you didn’t quite touch on was using the Apple Pencil to hand write words and then convert to text. But this is kind of obvious so probably doesn’t need a separate call out. Thanks again!

Thanks for the review. This app is a bit basic than I expected, I think I prefer the endless canvas on OneNote Pages but with a lot more functions - plus notebooks and folders.

No PDF markup? No auto convert to shapes? No links between objects? No writing on sticky notes? No background sound recording (linked to edit history)? No semantic (meaning) scaling or zoom? No easy shared palette of most frequently used tools and actions? No scaled links for embedded notes? No linking and live inclusion between canvases? No linking to external canvases (created by other people and stored on the cloud)? No hyperlinked jumps between different locations (and magnifications) on the same canvas? No history slider? No branching history. No time or calendar or location or map associations or navigation? No sequence or procedure tools or actions? No task management? No semantic (meaning mining) tools? No search and find and mapping tools for shared concepts? No saved searches (smart folders)? No search triggers? App doesn't watch what you do and auto-find most often and most salient concepts? No word maps. App doesn't do auto web searches while you aren't using it, based on your activity and work within it? You can't even do org charts? Network diagrams? Floor layouts? Scaled drawings? Charts? Graphs? Tables?Doesn't allow you to build forms? Sometimes I really wonder what the F is going on at apple... is anyone in charge? Headless monster? No actual goals or predictions? I see a giant company that keeps reinventing the same exact tools and services (same ones Xerox invented between the late 60's and mid 70's. Sad really.
Contains nothing new at all. Doesn't really integrate with other apps. Its like a dumbed down MacDraw (without any of the parts of macDraw that were actually useful).
There is plenty missing that we have to cover all that in a different video! This app was suppose to bring everything together.

yes, everything takes just too much time. thats the correct tag line. to me this is what Keynote is doing already. This was a big chance for Apple. and they missed. big time. almost unusable. I though Keynote could gain more editing/movie options as well. this is just poor atempt. nice review as always. thank you.

No, you can’t
it's ok, but other tools have better shape support. i can't figure out how to make the line tool 'stick' to a shape, that would make for easier flowcharting.
They have added that sticking effect in iPadOS 17.
Element note its new app and have amazing handwriting , you should try it ,it’s new generation notetaking app
now, this app suits my needs. and it comes free! They just need to allow us annotate the pdfs😊in the canvas

Im a long time subscriber, and even thought i havent seen your recent vidoes since after i bought the margin note based on your videos 2 years back. I came back again today to see what new in paperless world and one change i observed is ‘what happend to your voice!!!’ There used to be a lot of interest and charm back then, now u sound like a robot 🙁

That's true! They could have added those to Apple Notes.
Only one thing I miss in Freeform -> mind mapping module . For me, this will be the final touch for perfection if Apple add this feature 😅.

The official app ive been waiting for. But, is there a way to turn off handwriting correction in Freeform (or in Notes)? I can write perfectly in Goodnotes or in Notability with Apple Pencil but unfortunately Apple apps corrects (idk if this is the right term) my lines and my letters.
Please elaborate on this.
@@PaperlessX Of course 💚 let’s say i’m writing the word “elaborate”. Apple notes or freeform cuts the tail of my letter e. Or my b’s I part moves backward a little. Lol i know its hard to explain :(
@@Halit_ We've not seen anything like that, before. The only correction we know about is the straighten option you get with the lasso tool. Could it be something to do with your handwriting?

I’m pretty disappointed in this. It needs a lot. A mind map tool would be nice. Better objects. Long way to go to compete with other tools. I hear Microsoft just released one of these also.
