Il 15 Settembre 1988, diciassette anni dopo la messa in onda della serie sui Jackson 5, Michael Jackson torna in TV sotto forma di cartone animato.
Il Re del Pop, infatti, concede l'utilizzo della canzone Beat It in "The Flintstone Kids - Just Say No", uno special televisivo trasmesso dalla ABC TV e finalizzato ad incoraggiare i bambini a rifiutare ogni tipo di droga.
LA TRAMA:
C'è "Michael Jackstone" in città e i Flintstone Kids si stanno dando da fare per racimolare i soldi necessari all'acquisto dei biglietti. Durante questa attività, incontrano dei ragazzi più grandi che tentano, invano, di convincerli ad assumere della droga insieme a loro.
Non essendo riusciti a mettere insieme abbastanza soldi, i Flintstone Kids decidono allora di partecipare a una gara, con in palio proprio i biglietti per il concerto di "Jackstone". Tra i vari concorrenti ci sono anche i ragazzi tossicodipendenti che, contando sulla maggiore età, già pregustano la vittoria.
Ma le cose per questi ultimi non vanno come previsto: durante la corsa, infatti, si rendono conto degli effetti nocivi che la droga ha sortito sui loro corpi, e sono così costretti ad arrendersi di fronte all'energia e all'ottima salute dei Flintstone Kids.
La versione di "Beat It" cantata da "Michael Jackstone" nel cartone (voce di LaToya Jackson) non è quella originale. Il testo è stato infatti appositamente modificato per trasformare la canzone in un messaggio anti-droga rivolto a bambini e ragazzi.

This is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen on a kids show. It really gives you an idea of how truly popular Michael Jackson was back in the day.
Man I miss this show it was one of the best

I used to love The Flintstone Kids growing up and I'm an MJ super fan and collector. I never knew this episode existed! INCREDIBLE.
This version of "Beat It" is so coool! I am so glad Michael decided to partner with Hanna-Barbera to do this TV special. I think that all kids should see this video at school so that they know when to say no to drugs.
Well, this was a prime time special that I saw back then and I believe only aired once that night and maybe one more time three or four years later as a special airing in place of a canceled cartoon series some Saturday morning

Fun fact: Michael would go on to make the song "Morphine" in his 1997 Album, Blood on the Dance Floor. The song is obviously about his terrible addiction to painkilling drugs, however the other name given to the song is "Just Say No", a possible nod to this anti drug campaign.

I honestly am surprised they never showed this when I was a kid in elementary school. I mean, if they did, I would've been more familiar with MJ other than when I saw him on Rocking with the Chipmunks.
The only drug-free related program I remembered seeing in elementary school was one called “Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue.”

He had gotten very light by the time '87 rolled around. It seemed like it happened so fast right after that Pepsi burn incident. Watch videos of him from the Victory Tour til '86 and you can see him "transitioning" 😂.
We watched this in school when I was little. And, since Beat It was one of my most favorite songs by Michael Jackson, imagine my reaction when I heard this.
I'm pretty sure it was this, since I don't know if there are other kids shows about drugs, that end with a version of Beat It. I don't know why, but when I watched this, I didn't think it was Michael Jackson singing. (I believe I saw this twice, and both times I thought it was someone else.)
Also, since he was the original artist, he could have taken an instrumental, and just changed the lyrics, instead of re-editing the song.
