Something just occurred to me that's another hole in Doctor Who lore now.
It seemed, from the old Hartnell episodes, as well as that bit in The Name of the Doctor, that Hartnell's Doctor was only able to steal the TARDIS because he was just an un-suspcious old man who was, thus, able to sneak past those that would try and stop him.
Now, being the "Timeless Child", wouldn't The Doctor be THE MOST closely watched member of Gallifrey by those in the High Council? Like, wouldn't The Doctor be the LAST Time Lord capable of simply sneaking off, unnoticed, if they were also the single most important person in the history of the planet?

    • @Jason-uz5mj

I feel like Steven Moffat wrote that line as much for himself as he did for Peter Capaldi. I got a similar feeling from Matt Smith's final monologue during his regeneration. It felt like Moffat infused his own farewell messages to each Doctor into the dialogue. He was a genuine Doctor Who fan and we know it's difficult for him to say goodbye to his characters.

An Adventure in Time and Space was easily Mark Gatiss' best work on Doctor Who. His actual episodes aren't particularly good - granted, when he's acting in them, he's great but as a screenwriter, he's nothing special - but that docudrama about William Hartnell is a masterpiece. And David Bradley was brilliant. He captured the gruff side of Hartnell but also delivered some very poignant moments which were devastating to watch. He somehow managed to make Hartnell's "I don't want to go" even more heartbreaking than when David Tennant delivered the exact same line.

I relate to the Doctor despite being a teenage brown girl and want to become like him because the message of the show was that you are who you are based on your choices morals and personality, that you're special by choice not birth. This 1-hour long episode destroyed an intricate story crafted over decades and killed the feelings thousands of fans had for this intergalactic 'Madman with a time travelling box, a screwdriver and a will to help'. Diversity is definitely important but a decent character with value and a personality is more important what they're doing now is stuffing ''equality'' down our throats and expect us to adore idiots with no substance. A female doctor is actually very interesting, there could have been a funny story about the Doctor trying to figure stuff out as a woman and forgetting that she isn't a man anymore. Every regeneration brought a new Doctor who added something to the mythic story and this evergrowing character but 13 has destroyed everything her past selves have done rendering these beloved Doctors useless
ALSO Donna can kick the butts of all three of these cardboard cutouts of sidekicks in her wedding dress

@@malcolmdrake6137 Regeneration itself wasn't canon at the beginning, and was only added to the series to solve a behind-the-scenes issue.
The Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) made an off-hand joke in 1981 regarding the Fifth Doctor (who hadn't been cast yet). he was asked "What sort of man do you think you're replacement will be?" and said "Well, you're assuming it's going to be a man."
In 1987, The creator of the show, Sydney Newman, wanted to cast a woman as the Seventh Doctor in a bid to reinvent the show, which was on the verge of cancellation.
But the first canon references to gender-switching were all in the new series. Before then, it was theorized, but the show didn't make it known one way or the other.
Plus Doctor Who has always been "woke", it just had better writing tho and wasn't in your face about it.

As a young woman, the show ended for me when Clara left. I liked the Doctor as a man. He was a sort of father figure, now it just feels like long, drawn out whining and preaching. Believe it or not, a character doesn't have to be the same race and sex as me to be relatable. I just want it to be a good character with some amount of continuity. It felt "comfortable" before. Reliable. Now it's all gone out the window for the sake of an agenda. I liked it better when entertainment was entertaining.

Clara's my favourite companion. In addition to being very attractive to look at, she had a fascinating psyche and a unique story arc. I think she was Steven Moffat's magnum opus as far as his character writing is concerned and her relationship with the Doctor might have been the most mature in the entire series. Most companions worship the ground the Doctor walks on and, unless they get mind wiped like Donna, that often remains consistent throughout their entire relationship with him. One exception was River Song, who loved him but would call him out when she thought he was wrong as shown in A Good Man Goes to War, but the problem with River was that she was a Mary Sue. Clara had flaws and made mistakes but she shared River's willingness to call the Doctor out when she thought he was wrong. She never did it in a "woman right, man wrong" way, she did it because she recognised that the Doctor wasn't the flawless god that most of his other companions thought he was. Also the Doctor would call out Clara's mistakes and flaws just as often as she called out his and seemed to know her better than she knew herself since he predicted that she would betray him in Dark Water. That's an equal relationship between a man and a woman done right because true equality means taking the good and the bad. After Clara left, I saw no reason to watch Season 10 because I knew there was little to no chance of the next companion being as good as her.
The problem is that Clara was TOO real. I cared about her so much that I became obsessed with Jenna Coleman and I know that's both creepy and unhealthy.

Mark My Word - in 10 years from now, Rian's part of that SW trilogy will be regarded as the Best and Most Original. Seriously. Just look at how much more people like it now than when it first came out - most like it wayyyyyy better than that final episode.

I grew up with Doctor Who; Tom Baker and Peter Davison were 'my' Doctors, and then, when David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi did their tenures, I fell in love with the show all over again. I have not watched a single episode with Jodie Whittaker, have no intention of ever doing so (the clips I've seen of her on RUclips are more than enough to convince me I never WANT to,) and, as far as I'm concerned, her tenure never happened; the show ended when Peter Capaldi bowed out. And yeah, I'm saying that as a woman.
The level of arrogance displayed with Chibnall's reign is unbelievable - "Let's see, this show has a layers upon layers of canon, and a formula that's been popular for fifty years... but I'm smarter, so I'll make it waay better by changing it all beyond recognition!" Yes, we DO need more diversity, more strong, smart female characters. But MAKE BRAND NEW ONES, and give them adventures OF THEIR OWN - don't gender-swap much-loved, existing male ones and rewrite their entire history to fit a political agenda! Doctor Who has had female time lords in the past - remember Romana? They could've created a spin-off show around her if what they wanted was a 'female Doctor Who.' Or even River Song... heck, The Sarah Jane Adventures was a childrens tv spin-off, and that was brilliant.

All episodes after *Twice Upon A Christmas* are revealed to be a bad dream had by Missy/The Master who was in a coma after he/she slammed into the planet. PERFECT FIX. Now just bring back Capaldi , the character of Bill, and Moffat to run it for one transitional season, then let Black Mirror's Charlie Brooker take over as showrunner/head writer - Ben Whishaw as The Doctor, and Hugh Grant as The Master (oh really you have a problem with Hugh Grant as The Master - watch his performance in The Undoing and get back to me).

This is typical cultural Marxism; everyone’s a uniform drone, and to aspire to be better is futile as you’re limited by your very nature to only be what society tells you were born as.

Both thinkers thus posited an "end of history": for Hegel this was the liberal state, while for Marx it was a communist society. This did not mean that the natural cycle of birth, life, and death would end, that important events would no longer happen, or that newspapers reporting them would cease to be published. It meant, rather, that there would be no further progress in the development of underlying principles and institutions, because all of the really big questions had been settled.”

I really hope that wasn't the reason why but at this point I just don't know anymore.
Missy cemented the fact that regeneration wasn't limited to gender in the canon and IMO she was super well done and Michelle Gomez have an excellent performance. Missy was a great character who happened to be a women.
The most interesting way to do the Doctor being a women is to have us go through this first gender flip regeneration with them, instead it's just glossed over and retconed to make The Doctor always a women from the start which is honestly just way less interesting as well as just obliterating the cannon that came before. It's so fucking dumb.

This is what happens when "woke" politics is more important than entertainment. The fact that the BBC is backing this is further proof that this is a reboot. It's done.... they don't care. They are out to cater to their specific audience. Damn you if you don't agree... that's why there has been this campaign by different media articles defending the direction of the show. It had an evil, greedy corporation polluting a small town and exploiting its population. It had idealistic rabble-rousing 1970s pro-environmental hippies. But you know what? It also had giant killer maggots spawned by toxic waste, action scenes with UNIT and the Doctor tossing people with Venusian aikido. And it was fun. And awesome. And also ended with one of the most genuinely heartfelt moments of the entire series (Jo Grant and the Doctor parting ways) that was completely well-earned after years of character development. Similarly, when I say "the shitty writing," it is in reference to The Timeless Children.
To get back to addressing your point, the regenerations that you saw were happening to a child, which has also been seen to happen previously. The regenerations in the past have always been, while mostly random, influenced to some degree of subconscious or conscious control (results vary by character). I've watched Dr Who since I was a kid and I'm 49 years old now but some of my best childhood memories are of watching the 3rd Doctor's TV series up at my grandmother's at tea time. I've been watching Dr Who with my mother, my two daughters, my brother and his two children for around ten plus years. It used be be a fortnightly Family event for us all to meet up, have tea together and watch Dr Who. A family tradition that had started with myself and my mother not long after the first episodes aired of the new 9th Dr Who series that had first been shown in Melbourne Australiaon on the ABC TV station. We were gathered together to watch the start of this years series here in Australia as we always do absolutely hoping that the 2nd season of this agenda driven dribble would course correct. But unfortunately within the first five minutes of the first episode my mother turned to me and said this is not Dr Who any more. We took a vote to see if any of us wanted to continue watching the series and it was a unanimous decision from three generations of our family to say no, we are not going to watch this once beloved tv show any more. We are all eagerly awaiting the release of season three of The Orville so as a family we can have a TV series that we can collectively enjoy as a family. This is a tv series that I looked forwards to every year and I feel a great sadness in my heart at it's destruction by folks who clearly do not understand or care about Dr Who eccept as a delivery system for their agenda driven talking points. As far as my family is concerned, when Peter Capaldi's Dr Who regenerated and the Tardis turned on it's side with the interior blowing up and Jodie's Dr fell out of the Tardis, she actually went splat on the ground and died along with the the hopes and dreams of Dr Who fans all around the world. I really enjoyed a show that was cerebral, fun and exciting to watch. I am really into sci-fi generally, I love the myths, narratives and possibilities in these stories.
We were excited about the Jodie Whittaker doctor but felt it was appallingly acted and terribly written - neither of us enjoyed the feeling we were being preached at, and my daughter said it felt like a badly written kids' show on Nickelodeon (and god knows there is more than enough of that crap about). There's an idea that goes around that TV writing has never been of a higher standard and that was true until it became infected with woke. What the woke infection did was make woke so important that nothing else mattered.
I repeat and I repeat again that I have no problem with a female Doctor and given there's whole universe of potential companions - assistants sound like it's a job and FAM can go **** itself - one should expect diversity.
Like Gary, if I may call him that, I was prepared to sit out the abomination that was Chibnall's and Whitaker's Doctor - but now Dr Who is dead to me. In my mind Peter Capaldi is still imprisoned forever by that ice and that's how it ended for the Doctor. He (or whatever pronoun people think is appropriate) was finally paying the cost of being a renegade (that might also retcon certain recent canon which deserved retconning).
This wokeness is just damaging so many of the things I loved. I sit firmly on the left of politics and this destroying of canon simply to be woke is not done in my name and causes me actual anger and distress. Gary mentioned that he realises how important these series are now and not only because of mental health reasons. Star Trek is so important because it inspired so many of the world's scientists to take up science. There is no other TV programme (except maybe an Attenborough documentary) that can boast that importance. As for its woke credentials, ask no other than Martin Luther King!
And as for the appalling Whitaker, who played Dr Who like she was playing a stupider version of Jody Whitaker who had somehow infused knowledge serum by accident, she's just terrible. BTW there are hints that Whitaker's Doctor, like Capaldi's Doctor, is on the autistic spectrum but compare that to Davison's & Tennant's who no-one could ever accuse of lacking empathetic actions then WTF. I have been angered by some of the things she has said but that level of dismissiveness towards the whole history of the programme truly enraged me. Nobody should give Kelly Marie Tran a bad time for Rose Tico. It was not her fault and I can even justify some of her character's odd behaviour which again has nothing to do with KMT. Jodie Whitaker's performance and attitude have everything to do with Jody Whitaker. Is she or indeed any of the BBC aware that during Tennant's (and I'm surprised he didn't tell her during Broadchurch) tenure female viewers made up over 50% of the audience and yet poor Jodie couldn't watch because of the male gaze.
Well now we have a woke gaze and it's a ****ing disaster. I'm finished with it.

Hello from someone on the moderate right of politics. I really appreciate your comments. There are so many leftist political stances that I can relate to, but I am also quite dismayed by the effects of the "woke infection." Let's not forget that there's a lot of us lost in the political middle ground. There's so much shouting, we just never get heard. Maybe the only thing we can do about it is stop giving them an audience.

Much of the appeal of the earlier doctors in the non-classic period was their relationship with their female companions - Rose Tyler, Clara, and so on, where the feelings between the two was more than friendship. This has been eroded, starting with Amy Pond, since she had her boyfriend tagging along, then of course Bill Potts was a lesbian, so that was completely gone. That has been lost now.

    • @hammyhamster8349

Yes she always loved Rory but I suppose it provided an interesting dynamic.
I preferred my Doctors to be asexual & the first hint of sexuality was by McGann's Doctor in the one-off 90s special. Up until then it was more companionship like with Donna and Tennant's Doctor.

I wouldn't call myself a huge doctor who fan but I was left really confused by all this decision making by Chibnall. I feel like I could have written a better story and that's not even my job.
The whole thing with Yaz I felt so bewildered. It really came out of left of field. She's the best? Why? She didn't do anything. Rose absorbed the time vortex. Martha walked the goddamn earth! Doctor Donna. Amy was the doctors bezzie. Clara who saved the doctor. I think yaz is incomparable. She hasn't used any of her skills at all as a police officer! Martha's medical training was referenced. Donna's whole arc was about her being a temp and using those skills and looking for something more permanent and to have that so close with her being doctor Donna and the whole thing of it being temporary was a massive kick in the teeth for her.
I hated that the doctor let the guy sacrifice himself... that's never how the doctor would have behaved.
We found the end of the doctor on trenzalore was it? I can't remember but surely if Clara went into his time stream surely she would've been like wow you had a load of lives. What was the point in the time lords sending extra lives through that crack if the doctor has infinite regenerations anyway? Riversong gave up her regeneration to save the doctor - that's all for nothing too.
I think the timeless child should have been the master. That's why he's so messed up. he's lived so many lives. Finally, he's genetically superior to his rival and without him his rival wouldn't even be able to exist. If I were the new show runner I'd totally retcon this. The matrix data was corrupted the master misunderstood it was him. The Ruth doctor was actually an earlier (good) incarnation and was masquerading as the doctor with some hartnell DNA on some mission from that sect that the timeless child was a part of. IDK I'D TRY TO PUT IT RIGHT THOUGH!

    • @jameswalker199

Heck, you could even go back to Jodie's very start and say that when she fell out of the TARDIS after regenerating, she fell unprotected through the time vortex and was fractured into a number of timeless children throughout many parallel strings of our universe, so while she might be the timeless child, she isn't the doctor from this universe and now must go around collecting and merging with all the timeless doctors in order to fully regenerate.
She could find this out simply by asking the TARDIS, too, since the TARDIS scanned the entirety of Gallifrey in order to save it, the TARDIS will know every minutia of fact about it and can prove that what she thinks she knows is false.
If she hasn't fully regenerated yet that could also explain her constant hyperactivity, because she is constantly high on regeneration energy.
It's not a good story arc, but it's at least not a Chinballs story arc.

And kinda like Capaldi’s character, an angry Scot. It is possible to rewrite the Doctor’s timeline as proven by Chibnal. Remember the episode Amy’s Choice? Where Amy, Rory and the Doctor kept falling into the dream (or nightmare in their case). This was because the Tardis was heading and plummeting into a frozen sun. This could be a really good get out clause to eradicate Whittaker’s time as the Doctor, it was all a dream. We can have the new Doctor emerging from Capaldi’s regeneration realising Whittaker’s time was a bloody nightmare. He, and I mean a He, checks himself making sure he’s a man and then saying that god awful quote by Whittaker “I just had an upgrade”, then let see how quick the women and how many to complain that is sexist. I see only one solution: the writer of series 14 must not be Chibnall.
They must declare series 11, 12, and 13 as non-canonical and cleverly write this in somehow.
The episode you discussed is not acceptable. It must be damned.
I can't describe how much I don't want to have to use the phrase 'back when Doctor Who was good', as I have to look back on fond memories of the Simpsons.
If there's one thing I believe in, that's change. Let's change Doctor Who for the better in this new decade.

    • @zybch

Its EXACTLY what he wanted. He clearly had daddy issues (ALL of the last season was about demonizing men) and is the kind of prat that got bullied a lot at school for being an insufferable know it all. This was his way to get back at everyone he thinks in his sad little mind, that ever slighted him or made him take a look in the mirror at what a disgustingly unlikable, smarmy little prick he always was.
And of course, its that kind of unflushable turd that somehow rises to the top till they can get into a position to exact revenge on those they feel wronged them in some way instead of manning up and getting on with their sad sorrowful little insignificant lives.
Whats funny is that he wasn't winging about a particular episode as much as declaring that Pip and Jane's writing was bad (which it was, I'll give him that). And just look at HIS writing. Give me Pip and Jane's shit any day over the dross Chibbs the idiot farts out onto the page.
