- The new Miss Ireland is an 18-year-old model from Artane in Dublin she talks to RTÉ News about fashion and feminism.
Anne-Marie Gannon was crowned Miss Ireland at the National Concert Hall on 19 August 1985. She took over from the previous year’s winner, Olivia Treacy. Reporter Andrew Kelly met her in Herbert Park in Dublin the following day to find out what her new title meant to her.
Anne-Marie Gannon talks about her aspirations to be a top international model and break into the fashion business. She doesn’t agree with those who criticise beauty contests:
I think women exploit women. I think the feminists exploit women, that’s what’s wrong. There’s too much feminism in this country..... If you stand an opportunity to represent your country in something, you should go ahead and do it.
She intends to do her best for Ireland at the Miss World contest in London in November.

The 1985 Miss World Winner was Iceland’s Hólmfríður Karlsdóttir. Anne-Marie Gannon was ranked in the top 10.

Ann Marie Gannon succeeded Olivia Tracey as Miss Ireland. Tracey was considered to be "the beauty queen that everyone called Her Majesty". Both Tracey and Gannon are part of what is known in Miss Ireland circles as "the big five", comprising of the five most popular winners of the pageant, with Michelle Rocca, Siobhan McClafferty and Andrea Roche making up the rest of the big five.
