  • An exciting new initiative is under way around the world, to fix some of the most polluted parts of our planet.1000 rivers around the world are responsible for over 80% of the plastic pollution being dumped in our seas and oceans. However, there's a new generation on a mission to cut the flow of trash going out to sea, using incredible new autonomous solar powered technology made from recycled plastic and this technology is currently being employed with successful results. Every day around 8 million pieces of plastic make their way into our oceans and each year at least 14 million tons of plastic waste ends up in our seas. This is why the non profit called The Ocean Clean up has made it their job not only to remove plastic directly from the seas but also to stop plastic entering the sea from the source. They have been working hard since 2013 developing systems by trial and error to effectively and safely extract plastic pollution from our planets seas and rivers.

Having redeemable deposits on plastics is needed. In NYC bottle deposits are redeemed at 5 cents - and there are gleaners who collect them and collect the cash. This would be effective in poor countries.

...and production of plastic must be banned worldwide as soon as possible. It is not all a problem to replace that horrible stuff from the petrochemical industry by natural material made of corn, algae etc...

Agreed. We used to have deposits on glass bottles, and we were careful as a family to turn those in. This accountability is needed, and helps ensure it is collected.

Seeing the bottle gleaners in NYC is amazing - HUGE bags of them on carts. Imagine people in the Global South collecting 5c/bottle when many struggle today to find $50cents/day@@user-vk7cp1op9p

Ocean Cleanup do inspiring work, but damn it Guatamala, it really seems like there's a lot of people there that just don't care. Ocean Cleanup is the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, far better to stop the plastic entering the rivers in the first place.

The main problem is we are making more single use plastics.
Like tin cans clear glass or even bamboo caped off with bee wax.
We have a way but greed is getting in the way of sustainability.

Laziness seems to be as much of a force - not sure how greed makes people chuck rubbish into rivers & streams etc.

They installed it last year in Marina del Rey and it worked great just in time for some of the biggest winter storms in a 100 years. During the rainy season we get tons of trash on the beach for weeks, we got a lot less trash this past year. It is easy on the eye and hardly makes any noise. Now we need one in each run off n the south bay!

Can we identify those dumping, what manufacturers are releasing this, so we can stop it at the river? We need to do this, and it's in our best interests. It is necessary, as we have run out of disposable land, having found out there never was such a thing, just laziness and lack of insight into what happens when we don't. All of us share the cost and responsibility. It's necessary to us all!

Yeah, a map showing the locarions of those 1000 rivers causing 80% of the ocean pollution really would have been educational & enlightening; I wonder why they didn't show one.

This happens because governments dont give a dam about pollution especially in third world countrys. The bottling companys need to be heavily taxed. once people start paying alot for pollution then they will be forced to find alternatives. as long as theres no consequences for cheap plastic the pollution will continue.
