Walmart is not going to hire more staff to make up for the removal of self checkout. Customers will just have to wait in the lines longer as usual. The Walmart near me has 20 checkout lanes, but there is never more than 3 open at a time even during the busiest times.

When they put self check out kiosks, they said it was just a convenient "option" and that you were still free to go to the cashier lane. Then when the kiosks weren't being used enough, they started getting rid of cashiers, leaving one or two cashiers and a loooong line in them to force you to go to the self check out area.
Now that they see they have theft problems with people abusing the system, they now remove it to go back to cashiers.
It was NEVER about convenience for the customer and was ALWAYS about increasing profits by replacing cashiers.

Depending on the store it is as little as a 4 self-checkout machines to 1 paid checkout assistant to as much as a 10 machine to 1 paid employee ratio, so it is still worth it in the store's eyes in some cases to have 1 paid assistant to oversee multiple self-checkout machines.

If you think Walmart's issues are bad between self check-out & actual cashier lines. Take a look at the debacle going on with the Amazon brick & mortar stores. There's a little bit of everything in Amazon's story. It's quite interesting, but funny, yet very deceitful & a complete lie to their so-called technology in AI. They claimed that their AI system were running the stores all by themselves. There are NO check-out lines at all in Amazon stores for customers to check out anything they want or need to purchase. You just put the things you wanna buy in the shopping cart & their AI customer service does the rest. All you do is walk straight out the door. But do they... 🤔 I'll leave the rest for you to get a good laugh. 😂😜🤣 +Peace, Funk & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend+ 🤘😎🤘

People were loading their carts with big ticket items and exited without paying.
I've seen people stuff duffle bags or gym bags that they've stolen from WalMart.
If you didn't have an item in a bag that was in your cart, they would ask you to check your receipt.
So what did people do? They would grab bags and fill them up, then exit.
They installed facial recognition systems and people complained.

Granted petty theft in stores is worse today than it was years ago but it's really nothing new. There was a lot of shady shlt going on even back in the 70's/80's when I was in HS. Young punk kid's were hustling Levi's, leather jackets, albums, etc... all the time in school. So much so, I'd say they're partially responsible that places like Merry-Go-Round & J P Snodgrass went out of business as quick as they did back in the day. I wasn't down with stealing stuff, not even a penny. But I'm not gonna lie, I did buy a few pairs of those brand new Levi 501's & bell-bottoms for a couple bucks from those kids. Sorry, but I couldn't pass up a deal like that. I'm just saying... 🤔 Kid's would go into J P Snodgrass wearing a pair of their dad's jeans & walk into the dressing room with 7 or 8 pairs of Levi's in their hands. Then put on 3 or 4 pairs of brand new Levi's underneath the clothes they came in with & walk out the door. And most of the girls who worked @Merry-Go-Round were always dressed to the nine's. Those girls stole so many clothes from that store there's still probably a bunch of shlt in their closets they never even worn yet one time. Shouldn't have had it in the first place !! Arrogant ass. Are you a business owner trying to improve customer experience. Self check out is a great alternative. Use it all the time. Some smug people like you think you are too good for Walmart. No one cares if you shop there. Not the point of the story

  • @YoSpiff

The Walmart near me has about 50% self checkouts. When they first implemented them, they had left only 3 or so checkouts with cashiers. They now have the socks locked up in a case, so you have to now get an employee to unlock it and bring it up front for you. Must be a commonly shoplifted item in my area. I can't think this is going to be effective for sales and if it is, will need additional staff to deal with retrieving all the secured merchandise.

  • @erich6860

So much BS. They are committed to the customer experience. Then they should of had more than 1 or 2 cashiers at peak hours instead of relying on self checkout. Keep self checkout but add more cashiers... win/win.
The real problem is, that 2 associates running 14 self checkout stations is not enough to keep an eye on petty theft. So not only do they lose money there, but they also irritate all the other customers who do not want to take an entire grocery cart full of stuff through self checkout.
It's so exhausting for them to blow smoke up our butts.

I would like to keep self checkout as an option. But clearly there are a lot of issues with it so I get why they are cutting back. I just find it funny that it was supposed to be the answer to their labor cost issue and now they're having to bring back people. It makes me wonder how all these other projects they're implementing to get rid of having to pay employees will work out for them. They'll be whining in about 5 years that that they can't make any money because people have found ways to working around all their AI to scam them out of money.

Self checkout is something I prefer, that way I pack the bags the way I like. I understand also, it can mean less employees, and theft must be really bad. Really should be two employees at the self checkout, instead of the usual one... four eyes plus loss prevention cameras should be able to catch the thieves.

When I saw that Walmart and others put in self checkouts I asked a friend who managers a small Walmart about his shrink. He said it went up a little. However self checkouts were fairly new. I said to him retailers must be nuts to do this. I assurd him and others that their shrink will go through the roof. This video proofs my point.

"Several factors"? No, it's only because of crime! I shop at this Walmart every week. The news story said nothing about how they locked up most of the personal hygene products (soap, shampoo, deodarant, razers, etc) where you cannot handle the items until you pay for them right there. They also said nothing about how they locked up the Tide washing detergent, and how they have security gates at the entrances. This is frustrating, because it slows me down. I can go through self checkout much faster than a cashier can ring me up. I want to get out of there, but the emplyees have to be there all day so they just take their good ol' time.

Here’s what I find ironic, didn’t Trump win by a landslide slide some years back making Hispanics specifically Mexicans out to be everything but a child of God? (He had to get votes right, which means a large amount of people shared his views) Last I checked that wasn’t your usual suspects crossing through a whole in a fence in Arizona or crossing the Rio Grande. It’s not “the usually suspects” giving NY the blues and increasing the crime rate currently. Point being there are POS from every background and walk of life, I’d rather judge people on a case by case bases.

But I agree with everyone's right to choose. If you prefer it then you go to them. I just want a bit of service when im spending my money. I now use the app and pick up all my stuff. I have them do my shopping and loading. I never over spend on things that might have caught my eye while wondering through the isles anymore. No more spending on clothing i really didn't need. Or shoes or anything else. I am able to totally stick to my budget every time and i dont step foot in the store.
