    She was about 13 years old here. I think a lot of girls her age would have lost so much confidence in the moment getting booed or given up on their dreams. She was super persistent, this is really inspiring.

      Then they stopped. Hard to explain the Apollo ... It's a known risk. If you make it to the end (Hookman will pull you offstage if the booing doesn't stop) you "made it!" It's Harlem, NYC. Survival of the fittest.

    She had some bad notes, but you could see that she already had a potential and talent at that age. Mad respect for her for continuing that performance like a pro!! She didn't let them take away her passion. Today she is a legend

    Young Lauryn Hill here was a diamond in the rough. The Apollo Theater audience was the fire and brimstone necessary. Years later, Lauryn Hill would collect an arm full of Grammy Awards, hit albums, movies, etc

    I just tried to tackle this song at a singing lesson... This is one hard song! You can hear she has talent though she's just a beginner here. Lovely to see such a massive talent in her early stages. Tough crowd, I couldn't believe my ears at first when they booed! She got the better of them in the end. :)

    This was the mid- to late-80s. Audiences back then didn't know things like "make this song your own" and such. Back then, you pretty much had to sound exactly like the original. It was also right in the midst of Michael's peak and it was considered almost a disservice if you "tainted" his music by not copying him. We know now - and appreciate - when an artist takes a song and reproduces it to his/her own interpretation. As a people, we're also a bit more understanding in that we don't boo our children; we promote them to do great things. And Lauryn did just that.
