I hope you don't mind me telling quite a personal sad story, feel free to skip if you're not in the right mental space to read it-
I have a progressive neuromuscular disease (shutting down my muscles and organs over time), and I could relate so hard to that storyline. My parents did exactly the same thing, they went for all the 'inspiration porn' type phrases to 'motivate' me, basically told me that I could do anything if I tried hard enough. Plus much more.. And eventually it led to a massive breakdown of our family around when I was 16.
After much therapy, they told me that the reason they acted that way because they couldn't accept the reality that my condition is terminal, and that I won't live to be an adult and to experience all these things that they told me I could achieve if I tried hard enough. They kept pushing me to go to university, said I could do any job I wanted, of course I'd meet a partner one day who'd love me for me and accept all my issues etc,...
Each time they said phrases like that, it was so their minds could persuade themselves to believe that if they talked about my future enough, that'd mean I would actually live long enough for that future to happen. As if it would be impossible for me die if they made and believed hard enough in all those life plans.a
I understand why my parents acted the way they did and why their minds made up they coping mechanism , but I still suffer the mental after effects even so. There's a lot of shame, feeling like I'm not good enough or not trying hard enough to 'overcome'... It made it much more difficult for me to come to terms with the fact that I'm going to die young, when my parents talked as if I was 100% going to live til I was 80+ years old. As a kid, you look to your parents for the truth, so it makes a lot of issues if you can't do that. Luckily I (and my family) have a lot of support from a children's hospice who are used to situations like ours, I don't know what would have happened if we didn't have that help.
I really push myself to forgive my parents though, and to properly understand how they felt and why they did/said what they did. I don't want anger or resentment to be there during the few years (if I'm lucky) left of my life.
Heavy topics aside, I'm just really happy to see a character like me in any media!!! I legit nearly cried when I saw a character in an electric wheelchair and who uses a ventilator like me. I'm so glad they got an actually disabled actor too, it means her voice is authentic in a way that it could never be with an able bodied voice actor.
Her voice sounds just like mine does (something that I'm very self conscious about, as the ventilator-voice is something I got bullied for) so it means so much that they didn't try to 'hide' the less socially acceptable parts of her disability by having a different voice actor. I would have been happy to have watched any storyline, as long as I was finally able to see someone like me on TV! It is a bit sad though, that it's taken my whole life til now to feel actually represented on TV and what a big impact something so small had on me
Sorry for the long comment, I don't really have friends or anyone to talk to about things like this, so I hope it's okay that I replied to you (as I feel like you'd understand a little, given your own experience of disability). I have autism too, so I find it very hard to connect to people and I've been told that I communicate weirdly or scare people off, so I'm sorry if my message made a social mistake

Two of my favourite plot lines are the woman with alzeihmers, and the nonverbal autistic child trying to communicate that he wants a toy truck.
I think the first is really grounded and shows a lot of people that love and loss are parts of life, and we cant hold on to everything forever, and the kid getting his truck was heartwarming as an autistic person myself watching the process of showing your wants while not being able to vervbalise them be told in such an interesting and relatable way. It made me really like petra, because shes usually so hard to love (on purpose) but she goes out of her comfort zone and bonds with the kid to get him what he wants

I actually liked HR better than Big Mouth because of the human stories and how they utilized all of the different types of monsters. It's a shame it ended, because the human stories were so well done, especially in Season 2. The episode with the nonverbal boy wanting the truck was so relatable, because my toddler is nonverbal and how they represented it was so well done. The way they handled grief from both the father and the daughter's different perspectives was interesting, especially when it was revealed that they were related.

It just feels super down to earth, compared to the rest of the show which is desperately trying to keep the big mouth audiences attention with jokes. But that is specifically why i like Human Resources so much, it genuinely feels like they're trying to say something about people instead of just doing jokes for 30 mins straight.

I personally absolutely love Human Resources as a show. I love Big Mouth to but I just _love_ HR. I love how the plots can be serious as hell, while remaining comedic. One of my favourite episodes is it's almost over, when Keith shows up. The way he keeps coming in more and more, each time getting even more intense, then at the end it deescalates in a natural way is so gorgeous. The way we connect to Yara on such a deep level, the loss of her in the end isn't played down, it's raw and _real_ and you _feel_ that loss.
My other favourite one is Pity Party, the one with Sal the non-verbal kid. I love how Petra treated him not as dumb for being unable to talk, but as a person who loved that truck (side note that part where he was shown with the truck he was pretending to be was such a good bit!). I absolutely love the way it was handled. I am autistic, and I do speak, but I understand the frustration of not being understood in that situation. It doesn't villianise the teacher or parents for not understanding him, and shows how kids can be unreasonably cruel but not in an angry way! I think the part about when Alice tells off Sal's parents for putting the pressure on him to speak. It's very realistic & I personally hated the fact my parents both treated me like that, the way that they put pressure on him to succeed as they celebrate his communication skills. Both sides in that are right, it isn't fair to pressure someone to be something while also being right about how big an achievement it was for Sal to communicate.
I absolutely love the show, and was really sad to see it cancelled. The stories were engaging & surprisingly funny! I love how Pete & Val had that talk, it was so good!

The main character has obnoxious drunk auntie energy, but we’re supposed to take her as a young, spirited , kind of hot character… None of the characters are terribly funny or even likeable, and the cameos by the characters from the main show are flat because Maurice stopped being funny in season 2 of big mouth

I heard about the grandma episode in the first season and decided to watch that one at least. I barely cry with media. All the shows and movies that people always say are so emotional, Step Mom, that sleepy episode of Bluey, the puppy on John Wick, cowboys riding horses in the fields in Yellowstone. All are apparently tear jerkers and emotional scenes yet I never felt that way.
But that grandma episode, got me. I was on the couch watching it on my phone with headphones so my kids can’t hear or see it and I was in tears. Lol maybe because I was so close to my grandpa and it reminded me of him and I in his final moments.

Definitely the biggest improvement in the second season was reducing the screen time of the most annoying characters (like Rick and Tyler) down to almost nothing. It's crazy how much more enjoyable a show becomes when the obnoxious "I-only-exist-to-say-something-wacky" characters aren't given as much focus as the ones with actual development. The complete removal of Coach Steve is also why the spin off is leagues better, basically the characters where Nick Kroll does a funny voice make these shows soo much worse, which is hilarious considering he's the creator yet his presence drags the whole thing down so much.
The vocal performances of everyone else is a huge part of what makes the show so good imo. They are putting their all into it and it sucks that the whole thing gets cheapened by the show's creator showing up to say haha random things in a funny voice bc he just can't help himself I guess? I think he works good as Maury but the rest of them (including his own child self insert lmao) fall completely flat.
It really sucks that as soon as Human Resources seemed to be finding its footing, reducing the big mouth references to almost nothing, and showing what potential it had as its own story, it gets canceled, meanwhile the worse version of it lasts 4 times as long because I guess the Nick Kroll voices are what keep the kids coming back.

I like how a show can go on for 8 seasons and win accolades, and yet you’ll still get people going “Lol. Big Mouth failed. Nobody wanted to watch this”. I repeat… 8 seasons. Plus, I shouldn’t have to tell you that a show getting cancelled was because people didn’t like it. If that were true, we wouldn’t have people complaining about the loss of other shows that have been cancelled. It usually has something to do with not wanting a show to go on to long, or money, or change in structure, or whatever.

I liked human resources a lot more than big mouth tbh. I felt the storylines with the human characters were a lot more interesting and emotionally impactful, probably due in part to the fact that they’re adults. The second season is a lot less satisfying though with its conclusions imo. Felt rushed. i also think throughout the whole series, the good stories really get bogged down when you have to watch 15 mins worth of unrelated, unfunny c*ck fighting jokes.
They rly would have benefited from focusing on one human character per episode. Big mouth has a big problem with focus too. Feels like theyre trying too hard to be random and its rly frustrating when it starts to hinder the structure and pacing.
