But in the first episode we see Eloise and Lady Whistledown mentioning that it seems to be a facade, which we are also starting to see crumble, the more he is aware of his feelings for Penelope. Because with Pen he can be himself, he doesn't have to put on a show. But I think they did too much. Him flirting with the ladies...ok. The brothel scene? Maybe a short scene like with Simon or Anthony in their seasons. Unmarried men at that time either had a mistress or went to brothels, if they wanted to have sex. Or started an affair with a widow or a woman from a lower class (like Benedict). But having Pen read erotica in his journal, and then asking to read more, doesn't make much sense to me. In the book we can read passages out of his journals and they are quite poetic, truly well written. Guess only the writers and the showrunner know why it was done this way.... 🤷♀️
