I'd have to watch the vid, which I'm loathe to do ever since DN went over to the dark side with its evil 'White Helmets heroes' coverage. Amy and Noam have been friends for a long time, so its probably hard for him to give her the friendly advice - to return to humanity - she doesn't take from other progressives. Also, I suspect that, despite the book writing Noam still does (saying, however, much that he's already said), he may be slowing down and taking the word of research assistants and 'friends' like Goodman on subjects like Syria and Nicaragua. Also, As I recall Noam isn't a fan of the internet even though he correctly predicted (in effect warning progressives, a good thing) that it would one day be taken from us by powerful special interests.
Norm Chomsky says in the interview that in his opinion early new elections would be best. In my opinion a propaganda war is being waged against Daniel Ortega's government and even Norm Chomsky (or anyone else) is vulnerable to misinformation.
My main point is that I think the headline is fair. Also I don't think either Amy or Norm are deliberately tricking us. The fog of war is a real challenge. Also I think that making this propaganda war about the left vs the right is bad optics. Instead we should say that the US is launching a political coup in order to gain influence. And of course Nicaragua's democracy will be replaced by a dictatorship if Washington DC achieves it's objectives. Those are the cold hard facts.
I was reading Manufacturing Consent and Chomsky was exposing the media bias regarding the 1984 election in Nicaragua vs El Salvador and Guatemala. He was legitimizing the elections in Nicaragua. The situation now changed, and the man acknowledges that.
Ortega says, "early ballot would create instability." This is just a round about way of saying, "but if I hold free fair elections, I'll lose." Of course there's all these idiots who want to reflexively blame this on "socialism" even though it's a mixed economy country and the crisis has nothing to do with that. You got to love the U.S. If the government of a Latin American country builds a single house for a single homeless person, the U.S. will say "you're taking a belligerent leftist anti-U.S. stance" and send warships over.
I need to read accurate, high quality books on this subject. If what he says is true, I am disappointed again with my species. If what he says is true, I wonder if we'll ever learn.

I wish Chomsky wouldn't say that "we" have subjugated, dispossessed, and exploited working class and poor people around the world when he's referring to policies pushed for and enacted in behalf of the US ruling class. I get it that his reason for doing this is to emphasize the responsibility Americans have to resist these policies, but it still grates.
I would also add that this is not a matter of right-versus-left as the regime likes to frame it. Things like social security and funding for education are not controversial in Nicaragua, a vast majority support these things. What people want is a democratic government that has checks and balances, and respect for human rights.
Winston Smith in Oceania Are you saying that Ortega doesn't deserve criticism? Chomsky certainly doesn't seem to be defending US imperialism. I'm probably not getting what you're saying.
Based on your "lojic" (with J) and given the fact that Trump just got a lot of criticism from Chomsky, why isn't Chomsky urging him to call for new elections?
Winston Smith in Oceania Cause Trump didn't break the social security system and proceeded to opress masive protest in the country killing many civilians.
people have been saying this about Chomsky his whole life. They don't like something he's saying so he must've "sold out." It's a tale as old as time, or a tale as old as Noam Chomsky more like
Sandro Rugama - trump is having peaceful protestors arrested & he has cut benefits for SSI disabilities & medicaid & giving huge tax breaks to the rich. The way ahead is looking perilous for the people.
7:57 : but that would mean admitting responsibility. And admitting responsibility would imply : a/admitting the US isn't perfect (We can't have that...) and b/ renouncing 'national-security' imperialism throughout the world (which the US's messianic duty, exemplified by models of virtue like the late Duane Clarridge, wouldn't allow). 9:25 : how's their social model doing ? How was it doing before ? And why never mention the Gulf states, who are equally responsible for the Syrian tragedy (not to mention Yemen) ?
@Antonio P. del Hierro-Valdés Hey, man, thats a great argument. Im sure chomsky would endorse it. You should be proud that at your age that is the best you can do.
Unlike Max Blumenthal, Noam Chomsky can actually see how wrong -to say the least- Daniel Ortega’s government is acting against its on people. Ortega and his stooges are violating every single human right in Nicaragua. Being liberal does not mean to look to the other side in order to contradict what “capitalism” has done to undeveloped countries or even to the US people. Keep your sharp criticism and deep analysis Noam Chomsky!
I wonder why the DN framed this conversation with clip's title so that one may think Chomsky is calling for regime-change.

I agree, "urge" is too strong a word to describe Chomsky's opinion.
Noam relocating near the border is a great move in this dark age. Welcome!

😪 he is so right about immigrants. No one wants to leave their home.
Chomsky. Strong views but no dogma.
This smells like Ukraine's Euro Maidan Revolution of 2013-2014.
And looks like venezuelan guarimbas 2.0.
Fuck you Leftard!
These radlibs simply can’t understand how imperialism works

we only share the same culpability that German soldiers and citizens did.

Chomsky has gotten so many WRONG things lately, I am concerned he sold out or became senile!

What a sad old man
If you are going to sample videos from fox news or cnn or whatever could you please link to their videos so we don't have to dig them up?

Ortega was created aided by jimmy carter
SOMOZA and the CRIMINAL GUARDIA NACIONAL was created by the YANKESS too....we have a common criminal in charge in Washington
Look at chomsky acting like a cia agent.

Ask bendaña about the fsln massacre of the miskito indians
Ask the US about the CONTRAS TERRORISTS they financed and the massacres of campesinos, teachers and civilians working in the Cooperatives?
SHAME THIS GOVMT!
terrible title. However thanks DN and thanks Noam as always

Ortega began his career as a hard core socialist. As always socialists become authoritarian and fascist.
nope
usually when outside influence is trying to destroy them because the greedy scum want control of resources.
Lefties have proclivity to corruption too.
