My one complaint about this movie is the abruptness of the ending, which, as we have it, leaves a lot of loose ends hanging. Most people probably don't know that the screenplay (which can be downloaded from the Internet) actually includes an epilogue showing Smith returning in triumph to his hometown, Saunders in tow, and Senator Payne's political career being salvaged, not to mention the villainous Mr. Taylor being arrested and the governor running for president. Maybe the lack of this epilogue doesn't bother anyone else, but to me, the lack of a suitable denouement is the one flaw in an otherwise perfect film. But it's well worth watching, in any case!
I felt exactly the same way about the abrupt ending! Nonetheless, this is a film EVERY US national politician should be required to watch and absorb. Reportedly, the US Congresscrooks who attended a screening in DC in 1939 mostly did not like it. If anything, the film WAY understates the corruption and lies of politicians.
Jefferson Smith's father was murdered. It wasn't a sU! c)de. As someone who has watched this film over 100 times (I show it in my government classes every year (31 year teacher). If you go back and watch the scene on the train, there sure seems to be a strong hint alluding to someone in Jim Taylor's machine (unnamed at this point) killing his father. Great recap. I have to sell my students on investing 2 hours into watching an 80+ year old film, when the overwhelming majority of them have never seen a film that wasn't animated or rooted in the DC or Marvel "Universes".

Smith's Father didn't kill himself, he was shot in the back.

This is politics nasty.
How we get to that point...
Quit waving your arms so much. It's kind of distracting!
