    The stock photography game has flipped in the last 20 years. I was (well still am) with Getty. Back in the early 2000s the money I received thru my royalties paid all my expenses. One shoot I did for Getty--one day production set on a train in a train yard in LA with a hipster couple, business men, older traveling couple--made me probably $35K (after Getty's commission) and this was with Getty paying for all of the production. They offered to let me pay for the production and my royalty percentage would have doubled but I didn't want to spend $25K on the cost of production--train rental, model fees, wardrobe stylist fees/expenses, equipment rental, etc. I calculated that over the year or two the shoot remained relevant I would have made $80k for that one day shoot which is insane. I'd average around 6-10K a month. Now with the digital letting more and more people jump into photography it is a challenge to see any substantial income from stock. And yes, your images will be up on the stock site as long as you are photographers but if your agency is like most, the algorithm pushes down older photos as new shoots come on line. Basically making older shoots almost irrelevant to the search engine.

As with the first video y'all made about stock photography, getting more insight into what you guys submit to Stocksy is very helpful. Thank you for this video! You guys are crushing it.

    It looks like your $47,000 is the gross amount billed to the client not the amount that you "made" after commission. Around 8 minutes into the video you mention the actual amount that Rachel and you made was closer to $26,000.
    Unless I missed some math you did not "make" $47,000 please explain. thanks

    I sell quite a bit of stock images at 500px, but find that I always end up with images that would be more likely to sell with people in them that I don't exactly know how to navigate getting a model release for. Do you ever pay for releases, or how to do navigate that? Thanks! Great video!

    • @MangoStreet
      @MangoStreet  2 года назад +12

      it’s easiest to do up-front. we generally pay models extra to have the model release included. you can always just ask your subjects retroactively to sign and some may be cool doing it without payment!

    This was an unexpected revelation because I have watched probably close to ten different stock photo channels and they aren't doing anything like these numbers. Mostly what I'm curious about is the per unit reward is so much higher than the others, which are typically reporting under $5 per unit royalty and that's the high end. What explains this? Stocksy is competing for the same end buyers as the others, no?
    BTW, thanks for the advice about local businesses and trades people and trading their releases for giving them social media use of your work. That's actually how I was thinking about going about it today.

    • @MangoStreet
      @MangoStreet  2 года назад +2

      stocksy is higher than the industry average, likely due to it being setup as a co-op, harder to be accepted as a photographer, and more curated and simplified process for clients.

    you upload all the photos you make working? or you make photos specifically for sell them in stock pages?
    in case of the first choise, how do you manage with your clients about the photos you take of them or their products?
    you tell them that the photos you’ll make are going to be uploaded to be sold like stock photography?
    you give them a % of the money you make with the photos?

    • @MangoStreet
      @MangoStreet  2 года назад +1

      in our case, if we are doing a photoshoot for a youtube video, we can usually pay the models a little extra for a model release. for past wedding and engagement shoots, we did get a few couples to sign releases after the fact. it would be a huge pain to split any royalties, so i would recommend just a flat fee if they don't want to do it for free.

    That’s a high rejection rate at Stocksy, having put all the effort in processing and tagging you might just as well upload them to other sites who are less picky. Also, stock sites are reducing their commissions so Stocksy will probably follow suit at some time.

    • @MangoStreet
      @MangoStreet  2 года назад +3

      yeah, it can be frustrating. stocksy did introduce a pre-selects (or something) feature, where you can upload a shoot for them to review before post-processing and they can tell you what images they want so you don’t waste too much time. since stocksy is a co-op, i believe they would need votes from the members to lower the royalty payout, so i don’t see that happening.
