I had the 7970 and it died because of lack of cooling and replaced it with the r9 390 and i was let down. I could try to run a benchmark test for you later

Nice work Mike! I'm again impressed by the 7970 and 580 3GB. Interesting to see how those hang on well when the quality increases. Also the 1030 seems to be doing great here compared to the energy slurping 480 and 5870.
Dude, I have the r9 290 8gb and kinda the same thing was happening to me. It’s definitely not a cpu bottleneck, I have a ryzen 5 1600. I’m pretty confident that this weird behavior is directly connected to windows 10 updates. I’ve been experiencing similar abnormal 1% lows and generally inconsistent framerates in many games like gta5, battlefield 1, ac origins and even freaking Skyrim. As you can see it’s not the fault of a particular game engine, it’s just windows. Unfortunately, I don’t know which update caused this havoc but I just reinstalled my windows WITHOUT updates starting from December 2018 and everything works fine. To be honest it really scared me, I thought my gpu was starting to pass away and wanted to leave me. But it wasn’t, it’s just windows 10 trolling.
At the release 7970 was trading blows with 680 and now heavy OC'd 780 can't keep up with it. It's the best AMD card has ever released and maybe in general taking place from 8800gt. 8 years old and still going strong. Just amazing. Honorable mention to GTX 580, although reference 1.5GB VRAM will kill it it new titles.
I loved my GTX-580 but that standard 1.5GB absolutely killed it as time passed. I wish at least 2GB was standard! That Classified card is still kicking ass relative to how old it is. Makes sense though, I replaced my 580 with a 770 Classified and it's still fantastic relative to other 770s.
The R9 390 thing doesnt make sense. It has twice the geometry perf, over twice the VRAM, twice the raster performance... It should be a solid 40% faster.
Yeah, anywhere between 30 and 40%. I’m a bit puzzled by the 1% results though. Guru3D tested the 390X at Ultra settings and I ran the 390 using the same settings and avg wise, the card sits where it should using their results as reference. Of course they only test AVGs, so I still need some info on the 1% numbers.

@@F2FTech Yeah this is weird. Far Cry 5 is a game that is intensive in all ways that the 390 advances over the 7970 so the result is quite strange to me. Even the latency is lower due to the removal of the crossbar...
Have you noticed that the GTX 480 with 1.5GB and 0,673 TFlops has the same performance as the GT 1030 with 2GB, and 1,308 TFlops?? At what point have Nvidia took a nose dive in IPC ??
Man the 7970 GHz Ed still holding strong there while surprising results from the GTX 580, 30fps even on HIGH 1080p.
It can even do Division 2 at high settings at 1080p and get 40-50fps.

The 580 was a legendary GPU. Still is, for older titles. I own one and still runs strong on my older rig.

I had a dual R9 290 setup and those cards seem to perform at their best only once the temperature target is set to 95C, no idea why.

A bit too much for most of these cards. TAA doesn’t impact performance a ton, but I decided to disable it.
