Garden annex build, insulation to the base, part 15

  • Almost there!
One more video and we will be complete up to DPC🥳
Not ideal with the soil pipes cutting through the PIR, but what can I do? I can't achieve the fall if I drop under the PIR, so this is the only option I can see.
Viewing figures are down by 50% so I'm not sure what's going to happen to the channel, because seems a bit pointless putting all the effort in if no one is watching, appreciate your thoughts on this.
Donating to PayPal helps keeps the bills paid so if you are getting anything from these videos, maybe you'd like to donate, or buy some raffle tickets and be in with a chance to win some decent prizes.

I like you Liam so this isn’t hate it’s just an opinion, personally I was taught when I did ground work to never lay a plastic pipe in concrete, recipe for disaster, concrete moves, plastic cracks. We surrounded them in a solid base and sand around the pipes then stones and concrete

I might be wrong it’s a long time since I’ve done oversight. I think the polythene should be over the top of the insulation and also you should allow 2 to 3 inches of floor screed that will be your finish floor obviously you’ve got to do that when the building is in the dry have a good one, mate 👍👍🍺⭐️

Loving watching your videos on this. Your step by step of the trench blocks was so clear and enjoyable. What’s interesting me is why you went for a concrete slab with all the sand and hardcore. With those heights, and drainage invert, maybe a timber suspended floor and simple solum would have saved you a lot of all that moving, digging and levelling, whilst achieving the u values? Getting sand, DPM and then all the chairs and such for the mesh, then the concrete pour, then the top floor, load of extra work and cash.
Also on your drainage, you could have considered a mini pumping station, get the soil pipes as you have them to the unit deeper than you have them, and then a coil of 63mm mdpe pipe to the drain slightly uphill.
    Thanks for great content.

I’ve been thinking about it when I’ve done it I put the stone over the pipe then sand on top of the stone so it doesn’t punch her your insulation polythene on top of the insulation concrete 2 to 3 inches below damp and then floor screed when the building is weathered just check that I am right because I wouldn’t want you to have to rip it all out again after all your hard work. Have a good one.

  • @StevenThorp-e1q

I’ve seen instances where the 110mm pipe has had to run through the insulation so whilst not ideal I wouldn’t worry about it! Needs must 😀 Someone rightly commented about not concreting around pipes but that small amount you used to support the pipe will not cause an issue. Keep slogging on. Love your attitude to it all 😀

Good job with the soil pipe, Liam.
In hindsight, it might have been better to pack the soil pipe to the correct fall and then spray expanding foam under the pipe, which would secure in place and maintain the thermal insulation.
Obviously, if this is something you've never done before, then it's an improved way to do it next time.
It's probably something I'd consider doing when I build an annexe, and not because I know better than you, because I don't. It's just an observation I've made thinking about how I could improve it, but in reality, if I were to have done it before seeing you do yours, I probably wouldn't have done it as good as what you've done it now.
So, I'm not criticising you, I think you've done a great job 👍

Zero chance 50% of viewers pay to watch these videos. Once you put something behind a paywall you'll be lucky if 5% of people pay for it. If you want proof of this just look at how many people who watch your videos aren't subscribed to your channel and that's free to do. The conversion rates for paywalls will tank your channel.

Liam - why not start a RUclips membership?
I’d put another visqueen layer above the insulation before the concrete. Seen it described as a vapour barrier or a separation layer. In the scheme of things it’s a few pennies!
On another subject, in your earlier video about costings for material and the savings you can make by ringing around- I’ve just used Farmacs for some garden walling blocks and aggregates- saved a couple of hundred and got delivery within 2 days! Good recommendation thanks 😊

Concrete reacts with the foil on the insulation so I'm told by various buildings inspectors and other trade mates. Can weaken the floor as gas is given off and also the gasses can be deadly inside a shut up property so best if internal to used a second layer or gas membrane, like a thinner gauge usually I've used. Externally you should be fine on that part

Its easy to pay money every now and then that way and i think people tend to contribute when they are in control of paymenrd and when they see others contributing. If you then dont get amounts you need for the build you can consider your next step. I appdeciate how much money, time and effort you are ploughing jnto this and it needs to be econmically viable.
