What other affordable GMRS radios also have the text messaging capability? You showed the picture of the BTECH GMRS-Pro, and mentioned that others exist but at the higher price points. You also mention that carrying a radio into Wal-mart or the grocery store would look odd. I would imagine that in a SHTF situation, using a smart phone to send text messages would also be out of place and might attract attention. Nevertheless, I like the capability and if I could find an inexpensive radio with this available, I'd probably get it.

Something like this is a must have for a person who traverses the wilderness or takes trips alone in isolated areas. If I'm not mistaken you can use one of these without a license in a emergency situation that involves life and death correct?

You can use these radio in emergency situations without a license. However, the FCC GMRS license doesn't require a test just the $35 fee.
