Good morning guys! I just wanted to take a minute to say thanks for taking the time to post this video... It means a lot to us "land locked" cruisers to be included in your ongoing adventure. With Love From Oregon!
One of the hardest parts of cruising is managing frustration. Within yourself, yes, but also the frustration that your partner is experiencing when they’re the primary fixer of all things broken. Which in sailing, is more than one can imagine. For me, it was soooo hard to not take it personally, but I was younger and less wise. Keep being strong for each other, including your I Love You I Love You I Love You songs, Erica, hahaha. And Warren, you are an eternal optimist. This is one of the biggest endurance sports an athlete can do. So, good. On. YOU.
Hi you guys, sorry I haven't been around for a while. We had 2 floods in 2 weeks here in Fl that took cars, house, boats and everything we own including computers. It is a life changing event. One thing for sure we are purged of stuff and we came to realize that is exactly what it was..... but it took a while to get to that realization. Interesting that my first episode back is about floods. Stay safe, it's good to see you guys again. Carl
'Stress Baking', that's the second time you've made me spit my tea out with laughter, after your 'taking it in turns to be dead' comment. Entertaining but stressful, great stories, thank you.
The 1964 Alaskan earthquake was a very bad one. At the time, my dad was working at a Chevron Oil tank battery (CALCO at the time) on a bayou in south Louisiana. He said that the tsunami caused the water to rise 3 feet, twice. A couple of 65' shrimp boats that were docked in a marina in Galiano, La. sunk because of what was called, "the washing machine" effect as a result of the tsunami. Stay safe.
@@icwicw6782 This is from Science News Reports: "Quake effects were felt in nearly every state. In Washington, Seattle’s Space Needle swayed like a tree in the wind. Lakes sloshed back and forth in Texas. Similar sloshing swamped fishing boats in Louisiana."
Having experienced earthquakes, it is definitely a nerve cringing feeling. Kind of experience 2 Volcanic eruptions of MT. St. Helen. The 1st one learned what Ash looked like, and my dad saw what it could do stuck on I-5 . I'm glad you're all safe. Have a great week, and hopefully no more of that.
@WEsail A pssible educational video for other sailors of what do in this situation or heaven forbid a volcanic eruption. I know we land lovers have courses, kits, and even training available for it.
A few days ago, we had an earthquake on the northern ca and Oregon coast. We luckily were south in Ensenada but a tsunami warning was issued. Being a marina is dangerous and you were correct, you want to leave and go to deeper water immediately. Glad it turned out to not be an emergency! Fair winds and following seas! SV Dulcinea
maybe a learning experience...what to do in an earthquake, who to contact, how to get info....how to prepare for a possible big wave event...etc...glad you kids are safe
Oh for sure! something we never really thought we needed to know what to do, but one thing is for sure, glad we are on the water, where we can quickly get into deeper waters and away from land. That is key!
I saw you for the first time when Warren and Brian helped a fellow cruiser with a rudder issue. Just impressed there was someone who (almost 😉) kept up with OG Delos in terms of skills and likability. Been watching ever since. Always quality content and great editing! Safe travels to Greece then the US and beyond. Thanks you two!
You guys are great! Thanks again for another exciting episode. Boat work, good cutting board, Mars like landscape and cherry on top a Tsunami!?!?!? Wow. Never contemplated what an earthquake would do to a boat. If there had been a tsunami warning, would you head offshore? As I understand it in deeper waters it's just a wave........
Whoa, so much action lol that was scary seeing the boat shake like that. I think it's awesome to live in the big blue yonder where your pet whales can just follow you around and swim freely 😂😂 Erica, you have the voice of an angel 🥰 God bless and safe travels y'all With love from Michigan, Jamie ❤
I have been through several earthquakes, having been raised in Southern California. I never thought about being able to feel it while on the water. Having seen it happen on your boat, it makes sense. The energy has to go somewhere, and water is a great conductor of electricity, sound, and, apparently, the movement of an earthquake! Thank God there was no Tsunami. Thanks for the video and fair winds.
ood vid....we have never taken a wave that far up the front windows - wow! I would have nver thought that you go change the brushes insitu - good to know. Dreading that day. Also we put these Amazon large silicone mats on countertops and desktops for antipslip.
Some scary stuff, just this past week there was an earthquake off the coast of Northern California, a Tsunami warning was issued and people started evacuating the coastal areas. Fortunately for them, high ground isn't that far away, even more fortunate, the warning was canceled after an hour or so. Most of that part of the coast is cliffs and highlands, but San Francisco Bay surely would have been devastated. Glad you are ok and for your own sanity I'm sure glad you have that Starlink, the ability to have minute to minute update information at your fingertips is way better than going back and forth on the vhf radio to get trustworthy info, I suspect most of what you'd get would be hearsay...
Erica's song sounded like a line from "Michelle" by The Beatles. I laughed out loud when Warren switched cutting boards! The local supermarket used to sell Cowrie shells that had been made into air fresheners. The scent wore off, but I kept the shells.
Well thank you! Glad you like my singing, someone appreciates the effort out there! hahah. It funny, warren has all the tools, yet he still manages to use what I have in the kitchen. Come on man!
I have a question. If in this situation, would you want to make for deep water to avoid a tsunami? My first reaction would have been to get out to sea.
Yep you’re absolutely correct, and we were seriously just about to do that, and we got the notification that there was no tsunami warning, pretty crazy stuff though
Lol! I remember when we had earthquakes in San Diego on our boat we never felt them on the the boat 🚢. But I did take our boat to sea when we had the tsunami warning. But that was so weird. That you felt the earthquake on the boat 🚢. I guess because ya'll was anchored shallow. But we have ben thou 7.7 earthquakes in California. And the ones here on the Big Island are totally different. Here they are very shallow and quick. But when we get a bunch of earthquakes it most of the time it is followed by Lava. You do have to be very careful where you are because they tend to explode. Unlike here on the Big Island where it flows out slowly to the Ocean. Ok ya'll be careful out there. Until next time, Aloha from your friends on the Big Island of Hawaii! Aloha and cheers 🍻 P.s. Injoy the "E" Ticket 🎟 ride" And I believe the volcano 🌋 eruption, you are referring to happened in July. The 15th 2022. That's the one that you can see from a satellite exploding
My GF from here on Maui was also on Tongo there during the earthquake you experienced. I texted her and asked and she was there scuba diving and she felt nothing. You guys were all so lucky. I was really worried and good thing you had Starlink. 😅😅
NO WAY! Wow that's really amazing, I have always wonderer that, well more so now honestly, but that's really crazy she felt nothing, that eruption was massive.
A Kiwi watching others experience their first earthquake is like an Aussie watching a Kiwi come across their first snake! Regard this as your apprenticeship for coming to Aotearoa New Zealand!
That seemed more like a Tsunami. Technically, it was the wave from the earthquake. The waves from an earthquake, sometimes called Tsunamis are amazingly fast. If your within 50 miles of one, it would seem like a shock wave especially if your on the water. Tsunamis can move at speeds of over 500 miles per hour (mph), which is as fast as a jet plane. In the deepest parts of the ocean, they can travel at speeds of over 700 mph. So, within 50 miles, its pretty instantaneous . We just had a 7 here in my part of California. It was in my home town, Near Eureka and Humboldt Bay. Earthquakes are a constant threat there. One of the sailing channels actually had a Tsunami Warning where they were, in a bay reminding me of Morena. I remember when Delos was in India , the officials freaked out. They only had the equivalent of a sat phone but they were forced to hide it in a cabinet and use some partially irremovable tape,. it was a funny episode. I wonder what they do now with Star-link on boats ?
Palm and needle with heavy waxed thread is an easy fix for the luff that looks like it has failed because UV has killed the normal stitching. A quick job, no sharp things. If you don't have a high quality palm, get one. It's a tool that has been around in the same form for at least 600 years. Use william smith needles, triangular, softened edges, super sharp. Another highly evolved tool. I pushed them through so many layers for sixty years. Still do. The sewing machine is for light work such as seaming and awnings etc. And the flying stuff? I think that comes from becoming too 'catamaran casual' with shit left just laying around. That was in the sales brochure but i'mm sure you have already had many other little lessons from same. Minerva reef if you can. Wednesdaays are good
Spooky, you’d think the water doesn’t give it through like that. Imagine if you’d been closer. And thinks start falling apart from the vibration.. brrr Have experienced a few earthquakes in LA where it’s common. Scary like hell. But good you’re okay. Great sail repair. Btw
Boy, an earthquake on your boat. Now that makes for a groovy episode. Thank God Elon Musk and his amazing Starlink. I've been through two pretty bad earthquakes myself in California. The one in my home could of been very scary but I was to busy running with my son through a kitchen covered in glass to get him out the front door. Amazingly even with bare feet I didn't cut myself. Perhaps I was flying through the air.
Remember, H2O is jot compressable. Therefore any motion regardless of it's origin is transfered in it's entirety without loss of energy by compression. With regard to Volcanos, in the ocean, you just don't want to be there. Seismic activity in the ocean can be lethal. Good luck and god bless.
We applied for the long stay visa actually, giving us another year, and you can generally reapply for another year after that. But I (Erica) actually have dual nationality as French so I can stay as long as I want. I definitely will be back
@@WEsail Thank you Erica! Do you recommend applying for that long stay vise before you get there? I'm about to start a Cyber 48 build most likely this summer and plan on staying in French Polynesia for as long as possible to see all the islands like you did. That's the dream location for me in the world to spend a long time. It sounds like you might want to settle down there once you quit sailing. I don't blame you if you do that because of how beautiful it is. As for me, I'll probably sail till I die of old age because of the adventures. I've already sailed 1/3rd around the world aboard a 165 ft. long gaff rigged schooner called TeVega that is now called DEVA. I also grew up sailing and racing but have never cruised like what your doing. Cruising like what your doing has always been a dream of mine to do and I've been saving up to be able to do it.
You're doing a fantastic job! Could you help me with something unrelated: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
