Honestly Light could've gotten away with it if it wasn't for that Shinigami yappin about how that 13 say kill rule is fake. That and Light could've also gotten the shinigami eyes himself to get rid of them if he wasn't so arrogant.

Not to mention mr died in an explosion suddenly pops out OUT OF NOWHERE and successfully kidnaps the other girl despite security being arned to the teeth
This show is a joke
no Light lost very early on in the anime, L aka Lawliet devised the most clever of plans to expose him the only problem is that he needed the proof of how he did the killings because no real court of law is gunna believe he used some magic book to write names in it an then the victims just died without solid evidence they would think the whole case was just a sham for publicity an then dismiss it.
so even tho Lawliet knew without any doubts that Light was indeed kira he still needed hard and precise evidence to prove it while simultaneously be able to demonstrate how it is that he killed people.
an that took alot of time to do but he did finally do it all the pieces fell into his lap his only miscalculation was the fact that Ren was going to protect Misa with the sacrifice of his life he didn't know that shinigami could feel love or longing cause he was so sure that they were just these overseers an avatars of death an nothing else.
so the scene on the roof with Light was his way of saying "gotcha" to Light but Light was too arrogant an too prideful to see the hidden meaning behind his actions lol
In a lot of ways Death Note falls victim to someone who isn't /that/ smart trying to write smart characters and complicated situations that become complicated just to be complicated rather than something deep. Really, Light wouldn't have gotten away with it at all after L died for *basically* the same reason he was caught in the end. Because both L and Watari went to great lengths to hide their true identities while Light made no effort to conceal his own and was his assistant-as well as number one suspect-and L and Watari were the only ones to die between the three. That's basically what sealed his fate in the confrontation with Near-his name was the only one not written in the fake notebook-but it should have happened LOTS of pages sooner.
If he wasn't arrogant, he'd never have been caught in the first place. Like the first guy he killed to send a message, he could've made him die 20 days later and nobody would know

@ It refers to humans in English, but says Ningen in Japanese. Ningen can translate to human yet Zamasu uses that term in reference to all mortals with a conscious being, including Goku. Death Note’s series doesn’t exactly account for aliens since they’re not involved in this story, but as the Saiyans have similar structures to humans, can be named, and have stoppable hearts, as well as having the same level of sentience humans do, there’s no reason to think that the Death Note wouldn’t work on Goku.

no because the shinigami can see their lifespans they know when some one is supposed to die an its their job to ensure that those people do die. the one exception was Misa she was supposed to die at a young age but shinigami called "jealous" chose to prolong her death by giving his life to her which expanded her life to half of what it was originally but then she clocked it back by asking Ren for the eyes of the shinigami but later on because of Ren her life was increased yet again an she would have lived to old age but she stupidly and blindly followed light an lost that life Ren had wished for her to have an took the eye deal with ryuk and so thats why shortly after Light had been offed by Ryuk she too dies like a week? later or something to that effect.
so for light to have lived passed his expiration date he would have needed to convince a shingami to love him lol but instead he made them all completely be repulsed by him XD its why not even Ryuk gave a shit about him at the end despite the free supply of fresh apples he secretly despised Light but played along with his games out of sheer boredom.
