If you are being discriminatory because of your beliefs, is that really an excuse? If Yakubboev disrespects Vaishali for something she was born with, then why should we respect the things he chooses to believe in? Also, I didn't see him explaining to Vaishali why he refused the handshake? Other players got punished for such behavior in the past.
He still could have used an alternative gesture that doesn't include body contact, but he chose to completely ignore her, as if she were a second class human being. What an asshole!

According to FIDE: Any player who does not shake hands with the opponent (or greets the opponent in a normal social manner in accordance with the conventional rules of their society) before the game starts in a FIDE tournament or during a FIDE match (and does not do it after being asked to do so by the arbiter) or deliberately insults his/her opponent or the officials of the event, will immediately and finally lose the relevant game. That loser could have easily just told why he didn't shake her hand or at least greeted her without touching. The game should not have been started and it should have been counted as a game lost for him right there. Now you say something and idiots will cry "Islamophobia" lmao.
Oh my god indian you must be brainded 😂 he did acknowledge her my a head nod and a hand gesture the head nod is out of frame but you can clearly see the heand gesture and her reaction to it meaning it was acknowledged.
@cyberiansailor9741 Ok freedman How would you greet someone without touching then? And remember that its a chess tournament so speaking is almost out of the question
@ perhaps the oldest deus ex machina in the book, the humble head nod or a hand gesture, perhaps you have heard of it? And have you been to chess tournaments? Speaking is only off limits during the game not in its inaugural ice breaker.
Could it be that, for Nodirbek, Vaishali’s greeting was outside his preparation? Nodirbek appeared nonchalant. It was like she wasn’t even there. As if Nodirbek was pulling up to the table, and no one was sitting there. I was not able to see if Nodirbek made any eye contact. I’m guessing that there wasn’t any eye contact by Nodirbek. For Vaishali, when Nodirbek arrived, she looked at him and gave him a soft smile. Vaishali then extended her hand. When Nodirbek refused her greeting, she put her hand down, and she appeared confused by Nodirbek’s conduct. Then, Vaishali looked like: okay, bring it on. I’m ready to play.
The thing was some time after the 2022 chess olympiad in Chennai Yakkuboev and other Uzbek grandmasters had some problem with the Indian chess officials which lead Yakkuboev to say that Uzbek grandmasters will not be playing in India anymore . Don't know the exact date and tournament they boycotted (searched for it but couldn't find ) but i think it was 2024 or 2023 . Yakkuboev had no problems shaking Divya's hand before but now he wanted to make a point of his animosity when Vaishali was around . The backlash that followed with India emerging as a chess superpower and Anand being the vice-president of FIDE probably made the Uzbekistan chess federation realise that Yakkuboev had unwittingly poked a sleeping bear both on board (Vaishali) and off it (the indian chess federation and FIDE) . The Uzbekistan chess federation probably leant on Yakkuboev to issue the apology on Twitter using his religion as an excuse . Yakkuboev was advised to at least do namaste if he wasn't going to shake hands . 😂😂

A handshake does not mean much in chess. But the luck of a handshake means a lot. In a perfect world other players should refuse to shake this guy's hand.
His apology is a lie because even if you cannot shake hands, which is disrespectful in itself and cannot be excused based on 1000s of years old bedouin custom, there are other modes of greeting and acknowledging without touching which he didn't. Add into it the fact that he had actually shaken hands before, it appears to be further disrespect. If FIDE cannot maintain it's own regulations and take strict measure against such unruly behavior, no wonder it is in decline.
The mistake of apologizing to social media followers instead of the person actually offended lies in misdirecting accountability. When someone apologizes to their audience rather than to the affected individual, the apology can come across as performative rather than genuine. This shift in focus suggests that the priority is public image rather than making amends. It may even appear as an attempt to control damage rather than taking real responsibility for the harm caused. A sincere apology should be direct, personal, and aimed at the person who was wronged, not just a general audience. In essence, apologizing to followers instead of the offended party dilutes the sincerity of the apology, making it seem more like a PR move than a true effort to make things right.
As a Indian I feel so bad I literally got emotional vaishali and pragg are our national Pride it's emotional connection with those players as a chess fan.. it feels so disrespectful.. 😞😞😞
In a competition, the moment an opponent is disrespected-such as by refusing to shake hands in chess-something fundamental is lost. The essence of fair play and sportsmanship is compromised, which can impact both the psychological and moral dimensions of the game. Firstly, respect is the foundation of any competition. When a player dismisses this principle from the start, they diminish not only their opponent but also the integrity of the game itself. This creates an atmosphere of hostility rather than one of healthy rivalry. Secondly, by refusing to show basic respect, a player may actually weaken their own mindset. Negative emotions such as arrogance or contempt can cloud judgment, reducing focus and strategic clarity. Meanwhile, the opponent may gain psychological strength, interpreting the disrespect as a sign of insecurity rather than dominance. Lastly, competitions are not just about winning but about personal growth, learning, and upholding the values of the sport. Disrespect erodes these principles, making the game a mere battle of egos rather than an honorable contest. In short, from the very first moment disrespect is shown, the true spirit of competition is already lost.
He could have just politely said that it's forbidden in my religion or he could have just did the namaste(🙏) but nope, he didn't. Either his social skills are terrible or he did that on purpose and the latter seems more obvious.

I am shocked Nodirbek's religion allows him to play against a woman. He should have resigned instead of playing. Or better, this guy should not be invited to mixed events. It was very rude of him not to give an explanation to Vaishali right away or greet in some other way.
Bit dramatic dont you think? Beliefs should be respected and where possible exemptions should be made. You wouldn't demand a Sikh remove their turban before playing chess, how is this really any different?
It's okay if he doesn't want to shake hands with female opponents but he could've at least acknowledged her when she brought her hand forward for the handshake....instead he chose to ignore her as if she didn't exist. He could've handled it better and I'm glad he apologized later.
Religion should not be an excuse to violate rules or disrespect your opponent. Letting these slide in the name of individual freedom just opens the door for more bigotry.
@@josephbidenskii huh? It's a damn slippery slope. There is a thing called the paradox of tolerance. I myself live in a country full of fundamentalists. @@josephbidenskii it's not about religious values. It's about any form of extremism or bigotry that comes with or without religion. You are being polite. It was rude not to shake hands. I have seen all Muslim leaders shaking hands with ladies all the time. For a practicing Muslim, it is also banned to appear in camera, play with women...etc...etc...suit yourself...a great religion.

Delighted he lost. If he had personal beliefs that impacted protocol and courtesy, it should all have been made clear in advance.
I’m ready to play.
he gestured with his left hand declining the handshake when extended to him
Such class by Vaishali, hats off to her
The thing was some time after the 2022 chess olympiad in Chennai Yakkuboev and other Uzbek grandmasters had some problem with the Indian chess officials which lead Yakkuboev to say that Uzbek grandmasters will not be playing in India anymore . 😂😂

Orthodox jews and Christians practice it too. India excuses a lot of hindu stuff based on a lot of rubbish. Don’t be a hypocrite
