- A lot of folks have been asking about our thoughts on the RedVision kit from RedArc we've had installed in our Lexus GX460 auxiliary power system. So here's our in-depth look at the DC system and whether or not we feel its worth the price tag. Even if this isn't the system for you, we cover some basic principles of auxiliary power systems so it will be a good watch if you're just looking for ideas.

The one I currently use is pretty good and works with my mammoth sized lithium battery. It's the Redard BCDC1250D still a little pricey, doesn't have all these fancy features but can accept all chemistry types of batteries, maybe not the lead crystal, has solar input and of course battery isolation. No shore power input but that isn't as important.
I'm an electrical engineer. Awesome job explaining what can be unfamiliar and complex concepts into easily understood concepts.
I also have to add that Redarc support is amazing. They are based in Australia, but they have a 12 hour window and they will go the extra mile to make sure you get the help and answer you need.
Thank you! This really helped me make a decision. I just bought the system for my van in Idaho. I compared Victron and others. The size of devices, scalable, and price made the decision clear. The fact you also field test them! People don't realize electronics in a moving vehicle get bumped and jarred. Your testing of jarring devices is essential so they don't fail on the road.

🤔 Seeeing that you love our Aussie gear, how about getting yourself a packet of Arnotts Tim Tams. What you do is bite of the diagonal corner of the biscuit/Tim Tam (NO it not a cookie) 🤪 and use it as a straw in what ever beverage you like, hot, cold or alcoholic. Do have the best effect keep the Tim tams in the fridge to keep the chocolate set. It does have a straw effect and the insides melt away as you drink through it. Mind you this is done very quickly like taking a shot. Something for the family to play or a group around the campfire. an alternative to s’mores 😜

I’ve had my Manager30/RedVision system in my 2021 JLU Rubicon, for two months, and I absolutely love it! I am a remote worker, as well as a photographer/videographer/ graphic designer- and my son is homeschooled, so we really needed a reliable aux power system. For us, the Redarc system is worth its weight in gold!

Best explanation of why you need a DC to DC charger I have heard. I just believed it was what you need but never understood really why before, it really was just sorcery! "Electrical pressure" is a great metaphor.
I still have my eye on the RedVision, May upgrade someday.
That said, I bought the REDARC Manager 30 3 years ago and it's been transferred into 4 different trucks. It's been bang on reliable, simple to understand installation and operation, and it's made 12 volt electrification of my Adventure trucks usable.
I will not build a truck with anything other than REDARC.

Nice work on this video, Kevin. As someone who has spent a lot of time on boats, it was very relatable with regards to engine alternator, solar power, shore power and house load relationships... including keeping that engine start battery healthy.
Just installed the kit in our Xventure XV3 trailer. I'd second all of your "pro" comments and add- I'm no electrician but install was a good, achievable project, I pulled about 6 boxes (chargers, switch boxes, etc) and pounds of wires out for a much neater install. Our previous system didn't have a master OFF switch- love the one touch, smart master control. And lastly- since this is running in the trailer, I love the phone as a second screen in the Jeep. Really excited to build on. I second the request for breakers vs fuses. Would love to understand the choice there.
I run red arc but I did it the long way, and always thought the manager was overkill for just a single rig, but in hind sight it seems viable.

Been hearing alot about RedArc on other RUclips channels for several months. But at that time it was only available in Australia. Wish I spent more time at their booth when they were at Overland Expo West. I'll have to search their web site to see where their next appearance will be.

Higher load outputs is simple, just use a low current circuit to trigger a relay with whatever current handling you need. Great video, you got me sold on this system!
A Jackery or goal zero is a good option for those just getting started to run a fridge

Great video and I know you know this, but you can run the higher loads off of this system, just have the lighter load control trigger a 40amp relay. It does add an additional mechanical to the system though. Solid state would be amazing in this system, but ill likely still be adding it to my sequoia.

As a huge fan of the RedArc Tow Pro Elite system, I badly want to upgrade to something like this. However, as most of my lighting controls and electrical setup are already complete, I wondering if just doing their DC-to-DC charging system will be a better fit for me. My Snomaster 56D definitely takes a chunk out of AGM batteries over more than 2 days. So, a dual battery system is definitely in the works. Great job as always, Kevin!

Manager 30 is a game changer. Especially if running lifepo4 batteries.
Red vision is an expensive and in my opinion unnecessary extra.
And of course it's amazingly built! It's designed and made in Australia!
Best part of the video was the cost breakdown of the next best alternative (the Victron parts) with all the separate components that add up to $2000. I agree, if you have tons of spare time, are electrical DIYer and want to add parts over time then Victron is a good system. It just doesnt have all the features of the Redarc, like the water tank levels, and lighting controllers. Sure you could swap some out and go mix of Renogy and other brands, but then you have multiple apps, and your not likely to get that great central control screen for seeing it all in once place. NOt to mention the cheaper Victron stuff does not have bluetooth/phone app connection so you may be paying even more than you think.

Great video, I understood most of it. The parts I didn't understand are not your fault, I am just electrically challenged... been so most of my life.
Anyway, I'm just getting into overlanding and don't want to spend even more money than I already have committed to, so a video on a more basic system would be greatly appreciated. I will need to power a fridge/freezer (maybe 45 Liter) some lights, standard charging phones and such.

A couple other comparisons to the Victron.. Victron offers a 5yr warranty vs Redarc 2yr. Also, the manager 30 more or less limits you to 30amps of DC charging. The Victron setup described briefly in the video would allow a combination of the DCDC and mppt for 60 amps.
Redarc gear is the ducks nuts.
I would like to see a future development of this system that is a 50 amp charger for the bigger setups like expedition vehicles, for example, for my own plans I am looking at long term travel and just need a bit more charging capacity. I know there is a workaround but then you are going away from the all in one system and you lose the battery monitoring.

Since water level sensor is a resistance, you may achieve trailer monitoring with 2 wireless arduinos and a mosfet
For the compressor you can use the redvision to trigger a larger relay. I prefer my compressor to be wired to the main battery since it draws more than the dc-dc can provide
Super video post comment. Where would you purchase this? On their website or from other dealers or Amazon etc.? How many hours is the installation in your opinion? Do you need a specialist to do it or is it DIY?

Having an electrician background is clutch on something like this. I can absolutely see the value in the system. But, there is a reason I was a plumber and not "sparky" (my pet name for electricians on the job, lol) I need to reach out to some buddies to help me get this thing wired up. Like you said tho, I am in no hurry at the moment. Just starting out, I have a jackery powering an iceco fridge, and no lights yet. Maybe by this time next year... But, when I do, RedArc Vision is definitely the system I will be going with.

Where did you run the wiring for you forward facing lights?
I'm about to receive my Bronco in the spring and i know if like to get a fridge. Now i need to figure out how to power it. Without know the frequency of my trips or the duration I'm really struggling on what to do. I like the Redarc products but i guess i first have to determine my needs. I would like to get the Redvision but I'm afraid it may be an incredible overbuild
You should compare this system with lithium power stations like Blueti or Ecoflow, maybe 1kwh, to 2kwh. TRIGGER does a good job with lights. I think the idea is to have enough power to all electrical components all the time. So, most trucks can have two battery solutions with deep cycle betties that are about 350 each. And run your fridge or ceramic heater or induction cook top.
So, all comes down to compare functionality to the system. Just to run external light, it's a big price to pay for a 30-minute run at camp site as a way cheaper solution for this. You can't run 1500 w heater anyway or induction cook top. So what is propose of it ? Just to know your battery charger state ?
Ecoflow or Bluetti will do most job and easy to change from just run a cable from Solar panel or your DC truck power

I would say the Redarc system is worth the money, the question is it going to be worth it to you, my opinion a system like that is only worth the big spend if you spend the majority of time living out of your vehicle. I do have some Redarc gear in the Prado.

With ARB compressors you don’t need high amp switching. They connect directly to the battery and you just switch a low amp signal to turn it on/off.
Don't need it for the switching, just consolidated equipment protection instead of landing some things to the battery and others to the Redvision 👍

Did you look into the ARB Linx with a Redarc BCDC? If so, why did you choose the RedVision over this?
I have both systems, the redarc is a more simple way of building the system. The linx system requires installation of the extra models for the different system. It is also not as robust as the redarc system. On saying that I use both. I mainly use the Linx for pneumatic control, compressor, diff lock, air ion, TPMS and my airbags. The linx you still have to also add circuit protections.

Yes it is 220/240V ready. You guys use the same standards as us in AUS. And yes available in the Netherlands. You can check the redarc site out for international dealers.

This is great but we should be closer to the marine electronics available now.
If Garmin made a dash unit stereo with mapping and nmea 2000, we could have this level of control and be able to add in endless components to get readings from anything.
Redarc should have started with a media unit.

This explains the system benefits wonderfully, and I'm sure it is the perfect solution for some. To each their own. But, to me it's just added complexity, expense and weight. A Jackery, a 40amp 100% duty cycle solenoid, and a solar panel (at some point) and I'm good.
Something like a Jackery or EcoFlow is great when you just need to power a few camp devices, but it’s of no help for powering and switching vehicle-related devices like permanently-mounted lights, air compressors, radios, etc. This is when something like the REDARC RedVision and Manager 30 makes sense. It can be complete overkill for some, but game-changing for others.

Your no high current/load outputs is incorrect! The TVMS unit has 5 30amp outputs which suit fridges, compressors etc.

Really want a solid-state overcurrent protection similar to the switch pro. I’m looking to upgrade and get rid of that! Also would be nice to have two more temperature sensors. Could use one for outside, one for inside, one for water tank, and one for self-monitoring! Why they provided 8(!!!!!) water level sensors blows my mind.
I love the system and feel comfortable with installing it myself. I’m having trouble with understanding the 3 digital signal inputs and where I would tap to create a function? Anywhere I can find the Information detail ?

For higher current devices like an air compressor, you can still use them with the RedVision system by incorporating a relay. The ARB compressors include these with the kit.
I’m sure Kevin knew this based on his electrical background, and probably gave the feedback to REDARC so they might build it in and eliminate the need for an external relay. I just wanted to point it out for others here so they would know it’s possible.
Interesting. A question about the lights? When controlling them via the app there are no switches. Does that mean other people will need to download the app?
You can use the display control unit and or still use mechanical switches. The app just gives you an extra convenient alternative.
Not really a direct comparison to individually buying the components; mppt, dc to dc and shore charger because you will never get 30a from solar and alternator at the same time with the bcdc. If this is an issue for you (e.g. big lithium bank and big discharge) then you kind of need to look at individual components. Also as you mentioned, the redundancy of having individual components.. although i seriously doubt a bcdc will ever die outside of user error.

I think it's worth it for full size campers or vans. Probably not a system I'd entertain for an SUV as it's pretty much overkill. Personally I'd probably go with the National Luna system and a separate switch like a SwitchPro or sPOD. I think the RedVision kit was designed for larger expedition vehicles. I'd like to see them go back to the drawing board and create a system intended for lighter use in personal vehicles. You could cut costs by making it a little simpler (i.e. you don't need 6 water tank monitors) and could probably cut the size of the system in half.
Your suggestion would not cut the the system in half. For the sake 6 small ports. The system allows for expansion and I you have to realise this system is designed on the basis of years of real experiences👍

I have been using this system for months. The app is garbage, and ruins this product. It’s very buggy. Fails to connect. Neglects to show SOC. I’ve had to delete/reinstall countless times, and even that doesn’t always fix the issue. A real shame considering what this system costs.
Absolutely not, a $300 dcdc charger with solar input is all thats needed, keep it simple.
Agreed. Simple AND Light as possible. Kevin doesn't go into the added weight of that system. It all adds up.
@@norsefalconer Ive got a 5 year old 120ah AGM battery still works perfectly, $100 rtt mounted solar panel, $70 generic BMS ( dont really need it but useful to see AH charge in and out ) and a quality DCDC charger ( Itechworld 20 ) running fridge 24/7 and extras as needed, never gets below 90%. KISS principle. if my AGM dies I might go lithium but cost outweighs benefits, weight difference in a 3000 kg vehicle is BS.
I have a 100 amp AGM mainly because my alternator is only 60 amp. I also don't think the weight difference between that and a lithium is worth the expense, even though with my '92 Hilux, I try to save weight anywhere I can. I have an ignition switched 40amp 100% duty cycle solenoid running to a Jackery 300 house battery for the fridge. A 100amp Solar panal is on the way, so I can use the fridge in a base camp more or less indefinitely. I also carry an inexpensive jump box just in case.
Seems pointless for most people tbh.
Overland used to be about nature, fun, family, getting away, peace, escaping, values, basics and tranquillity. It seem to be now all about more and more and more of very very, extremely expensive products , merchandise, never ending purchases, commercialism’s, always shopping for the “next thing”, constant modifications, a race for ”bigger, shinier and better” and spending big money. It’s a shame. Go back to basic. You really don’t need any of this.
It still is about that and that's why I mentioned this very fact in the video. Enjoy it first, then make improvements as you see fit. It's certainly not needed, but with time; some folks want to take their capabilities to the next level. Nothing wrong with either setup so long as you're invested in the pasttime more than the gear. 👍
@@LifestyleOverland nothing wrong but I think, and you will agree (I am from Sydney Australia by the way), it used to be about the outback, about the wilderness, the wild open lands. it seem to be that these days, people are trying to take "Las Vegas strip" with them with every tiny luxury of a chic modern city apartment...every car looks like one of these light shows...and it generate enough electricity to power a small city
