Don't Buy A GEN3 Dodge Viper Before You Watch This Video!!! Plus replacing Spark Plug Wires

  • This is a video on how to replace the spark plug wires, remove the intake manifold, or simply to get access to the ignition coil packs. It is also a warning for those considering a Viper, especially a GEN3. The warning is for those that enjoy working on their cars. The GEN3 Vipers has the ignition coils underneath the air intake manifold which is very cumbersome to remove to gain access to the coil parks and ignition wires. Just some advice before you decide. Watch before you buy! Thanks for watching!

    I feel your pain,had a bad wire on mine so I bought a set from roe racing, I also installed the available hi rpm coils, pulled it apart like you said, i used 2 broom sticks to keep intake just above block to re run all the injector wires thru all the holes, my savior was what I call a "water letter outer" extension(from three stooges)long skinny hand spin extension right to small socket that fit thru all the access holes, 20 min to pull apart, need to watch metal gasket not to damage, my hardest part of the job was to put on the heat guards on new wires, screw the wire holders since new wires were 8.5 mm which are larger than stock, have red wires, used red zip ties and it looks very neat, like you said mark each one before you pull them off

    Just ordered some replacement OEM cables for my Gen 3, this video is exactly what I needed for the install. Thanks!

    • @DeeperImageAutomotive
      @DeeperImageAutomotive  2 года назад +2

      Awesome! Good luck with the install. Some people do the wires without removing the intake. They remove all the plastics in the rear and just fish the wires from the back by the firewall. If you do remove the intake please be super careful with all the intake bolts that they don't fall in the intakes. Good luck!

    I own a gen 2 viper and a 2005 Ram Srt10 (same engine that is spoken of in this video). Gen 2 and gen 3 both use full length ignition wires unlike 4th and 5th gen but the gen 2 coil packs are more easily accessible to replace the wires. The gen 3 coil packs, as stated in vid, is mounted underneath the intake manifold which is admittingly ridiculous. I personally don't understand why they didn't mount them similar to gen 2. That said, it is a service that is doable in a garage without a paid mechanic. It will take much more time than a standard wire replacement but if this is your dream car and a gen 4 or 5 is too expensive, I would not let this maintenance issue get in your way of purchase. Understand that all vehicles have one issue or another that you will have to deal with. That's part of being a gear head. Buy what you love, love what you buy, accept her flaws and deal with them accordingly because none of them are perfect. Cheers.

      @DeeperImageAutomotive  4 месяца назад +1

      Yeah the GEN3 is a great Viper still, and much cheaper than 4s, but not being able to easily do your wires is a pita. Also, the GEN 4s have better oil pickups, GEN5s are still the best design for oil pickup, but the GEN3s suffer badly from oil starvation in the turns, which leads to premature rod bearing failures as it happened to me.

      They are amazing cars. Prices have gone up quite a bit now because of the crazy market, but hopefully cools off a little. I have seen some folks do the wires without removing the intake, by taking off the cowling around the windshield and removing the wipers, so they can get their hands through the back of the intake close to the firewall. Never tried it though.

    The gen 3 viper is by far one of the easiest cars i have ever worked on. If you regret buying a 3rd gen because you think the wires are hard then this (and any other car) is not the car for you to work on your self. Took maybe an hour tops top replace coils with Demon coils and JTSVP wires and that is with entirely removing the intake plenum.

    • @DeeperImageAutomotive
      @DeeperImageAutomotive  4 года назад +1

      TWNTRBOZ In most cars (or other gen Vipers) you don’t have to remove an intake plenum and that’s my point. It isn’t hard to do, but it takes time and if you’re not careful you can easily drop things in the engine that can cause severe damage. So you’re complete wrong in saying any other car. And this is the car for me, I own it.

    • @TWNTRBOZ
      @TWNTRBOZ 4 года назад +2

      @@DeeperImageAutomotive my comment was referring to the videos tone of a gen 3 being hard to work on due to coil location and how difficult removal of the upper plenum is. I don't think for the average person such an issue should deter them from purchasing one as its not really that hard or time consuming. when I do these I remove the plenum rather than just lift it. makes it easy. I am glad to see other owners working on these. they are simple built cars that should not scare people. congrats on owning this one. Mine is also Gen 3 (06 coupe) that is daily driven. reliability is great with these. I am now over 140k and climbing!
      -side note, Nice flag and toolbox. I have the same ones.

    • @DeeperImageAutomotive
      @DeeperImageAutomotive  4 года назад +1

      @@TWNTRBOZ Yeah I get the point that it isn't hard, especially for someone with the right tools, and experience working on cars. I really just wanted to let people know that may be in the market for them just an FYI, was not trying to be negative about one, perhaps it came across that way. I do love my G3 and hope to keep it forever since I've replaced everything on it, including the engine. They are incredibly fun, and very few cars like it on the market. Thanks for the feedback!

      Some people find this informative. If someone doesn't care about maintenance, maybe he shouldn't be watching this video in the first place. Silly. It's too easy to go somewhere else.
      I use to have a gen 3. I didn't have it long enough to change the spark plugs. If I had it longer (car accident) I would have tried to change the plugs myself.
      I see that paxton in there. That explains why u went with the gen 3 over the gen 4. I had a paxton also. Big deciding factor.
      I like working on my cars too and it's frustrating looking at this video for something as simple as spark plugs. Lol. Big job.
