I think I've watched you do many if not most all of these selection edge improvement techniques here and there before, but thank you for consolidating and sharing them into one "bucket".
You're a star. Love your vids which collect together all the tips on one topic so I can refer back to it when need some guidance in middle of project - rather than having to hunt around multiple ones to find each technique.
Hello again and thank you so much for this one. Those jagged edges are a real nuisance and your methods for tackling them are fantastic and very much appreciated!
Thanks so much for the tips. I always learn something new or learn how to improve certain techniques. I will save this tutorial and refer back to it many times.
dear colin smith An excellent tutorial for removing edges when clipping an object with a mask. A good and efficient technique, shortens the time to complete the cut. I learned another technique thanks to your guidance. Appreciate it very much. Thanks and appreciation Avidan Yoram Israel👍🏾
Great tutorial and techniques for refining edges. If anyone is interested I thought I would share a workflow for refining the edges on both the body and hair using only ONE mask. It’s essentially a two stage process: 1. Select your subject. Then go into select and mask and focus on refining the edges of the body only by using the global refinement sliders. I like to do this by adding a slight feather (and sometimes smooth as well) to blur the edges. Then bring back the sharpness of the edge with the contrast slider. And finally shift the edge inwards a little to avoid and fringing. Output the refinements to a layer mask. 2. With that layer selected go back into select and mask a second time. You will notice all the global refinement sliders we used on the body have been reset. Now you can focus on refining the edges of the hair alone using the refine edge brush. Output to a layer mask to update the mask with the hair refinement. Now you have both body and hair refinements on the same mask.
I'm not really new to Photoshop but I primally use Lightroom. I am an amateur photographer and use Lightroom for that. But lately I have been wanting to learn how to really use Photoshop. I have a couple of old prints that I bought from a street vender in Paris several years ago and am playing around with the scans I made. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks. Great presentation - However im still looking for the best method for making an accurate selection of complex imagesuch as the Wattle Blossom flower branch where there are hundreds of fine protrusions all over the image and lots of little open spaces to be separated, any advice would be forever appreciated
Colin, PS 24.1.1 is out now. Do you know if the "delete and fill" section using the lasso tool has been fixed? For some reason, it was removed in PS update 24.1. Love your work.
Thank you for this tutorial! Maybe I'll stop to use time consuming pen tool after this :) Feather feature is also my tool, but don't understand what does the contract tool do.
Another approach which I picked up from an Italian Color Management Specialist Marco Olivotto - his RUclips Video that illustrates his approach is... 2.9 Working with ALCE | ALCE finds the Key | Tutorial by Marco Olivotto. I suggest you take a look at his approach to dealing with halos.
I do not see the 'background" option on levels - I just have RGB and Red Green Blue as options -i see your's is custom what am I missing? If I use levels the way that it is on my photoshop it alters the entire image not just hair
You are a true master of Photoshop. Your knowledge is impressive and unfortunately, I cannot understand most of what you are trying to teach. You are not a very good teacher for someone who has intermediate knowledge of Photoshop.

In Photoshop there is probably a hundred different techniques to accomplish the cutout, but I learned a few more tricks, thanks Colin!
That last technique is very interesting. I hope I can remember it. Thank you.
This is exactly what I need ... thank you so much :)
Oh My. This was very helpful.
Love tip five excellent. Thank you
Thanks for this share with us
For reducing fuzzy edges you can also use the two filters Noise > Median or Noise > Dust & Scratches. It makes the edges smoother.
Gracias por compartir conocimientos de forma tan didáctica.

What a pity that Adobe’s algorithms are not yet good enough to avoid all that extra work .
...Some good tips, but you are using incredibly easy images to Mask/Select. Use more difficult examples (real world applications) for your PS tips.
You start the video with 3 layers but don’t explain what they are or how you created them.
