What It's Like Staying At Walt Disney World During Hurricane Ian

  • We arrived on Sunday to our vacation we had planned for quite some time. This was the first time that we did a split stay where the day we change hotels fell on the same day as the hurricane making landfall on Florida. I hit record throughout the day to see what it is like at Walt Disney World with a hurricane.

Have to really appreciate these Disney employees and employees at the stores/restaurants for being at work given that they have homes and families in the middle of the Ian mess. I think every single one of them deserve a huge bonus!!

@@markruane3660 I used to live in Orlando, the extreme poverty because of the parks/resorts and local and state politics is hard to accept, and the soaring rents they have been experiencing I'm sure its worse. I don't think most people realize the very real price of a Disney vacation. A lot of the older motor lodges and time shares have been turned into weekly rentals, and statistically people staying there are supposed to be counted as un-housed, but they aren't because it would make the area look like one big homeless encampment. I am no fan of Reedy Creek, but Florida mob boss politics just makes everything a billion times worse. People that live there don't really realize how bad it is because they are too poor to leave so they have nothing to compare it to. There is a 25 yr old running for congress, he beat out a bunch of old school crooks from the democratic party, lets see if he can beat out a republican crook too.

@@notverynotoriousg5674 It's times like these I wonder why the government doesn't provide people with a basic set up like the "INCRED-I-BOX" company provides. It's got off grid systems that would really save lives in disasters like this. It would be cheaper to house anyone who needs it, than lose the work that people in poverty provide. We should be giving them a place to rest after helping others.
The homes are easy and cheap to build, and it would ensure people would get back to work because they would have a place to live. Sleeping alone in a shelter with a bunch of strangers is terrifying. We all want to avoid that.
They aren't trendy little boxes like Elon was touting with his expensive tiny homes, but they get the job done and I don't understand why Disney doesn't just offer them to ANY employee that can manage to find land to put them on. It's the least they could do IMO.
I love disney. I really, really do, but I always believe what Walt believed. Take care of the people who take care of you.

We have been through four hurricanes while at Disney, including one at sea for our wedding cruise. (Yes, we have bad luck when it comes to travel). Two were back to back, within days, and one was a separate time going. Disney was wonderful!! Organized and informative, they made sure everyone had what they needed and were entertained the best they could. When the winds started really kicking, they pulled people into safe areas. They came with bagged meals to every hotel room door each day. Kids had treasure hunts in the hotel. Costumed characters read to kids. If you have to be stuck anywhere in a storm, Disney is it!

This was an awesome video, loved it, glad everybody had a great time.
Since I live on the Gulf of Mexico in Pinellas County (a little North of Clearwater Beach) my family and I had to evacuate. We decided to go to our friends house in Naples. We drove late Tuesday and on the way we heard on the radio hurricane had shifted and was heading towards Naples. So we stopped at a gas station that was so crowded but the wonderful employees were incredible, directing cars to the pumps, doing this in the pouring rain and wind.
While inside we were trying to figure out what to do, go to our friends to eat, rest then leave because we thought we were in Naples already(this is because we were all exhausted after securing our home, packing, getting my sick and injured kid in car and driving 3 hrs)
    We decided to turn around.
I lost my sister’s car behind me because it was raining so hard and she doesn’t like to use her cell while driving 🥴
The problem with that, she drives like a turtle and I was scared to death they were going to close the Sunshine Skyway Bridge because of high winds and she would get lost having to go the long way.
Don’t know if you have ever been on this bridge but it looks like a Roller Coaster going to heaven and worse during rain and wind!
She did make it and we all got home safely.
The only damage was trees down and debris.
My sister called me the next day to ask what city were we in when we got gas, I looked at my receipt and it’s called,
Love’s Travel Stop, Fort Meyer’s Florida!
Please pray for all these wonderful employees that they got out safely. They were so cheerful helping everyone while we were inside getting coffee, no one knew what was coming 😢
We all have been praying nonstop for them and that God and our Guardian Angels let us make the right decision to turn around to safety.
Our friends in Naples lost power almost 4 hrs after we left that gas station, we didn’t hear from them till late Thursday night but they were fine only flooded and on and off power.
Stay safe and Florida is our Heaven, so is Chick-Fil-A 😂

As someone in the travel industry for almost 30 years, I can assure you that this is a vacation that the kids will remember forever! I hope you are all safe. Especially seeing how it seems like the possible impact of Ian was downplayed to you, based on the light-hearted nature of this video!
I wanted to remark on the statement about it being impossible to guess that this could happen"--That is not actually true. It is September in Florida. Height of (the height of) hurricane season!! It seams like Disney is well prepared and will hopefully fare well. But when one plans a trip to Florida (or the Caribbean) during hurricane season--GET TRIP INSURANCE!!! It is not impossible to be prepared. Especially after a lot of planning and money for a big trip! Read your policy before you buy it, make sure it includes everything you want and need (look over the health and medical part!). Otherwise the very well planned out, expensive family vacation everyone was dreaming about, can become an endless nightmare you could be paying for forever!!! Travel safely!

It wasn’t the first hurricane to hit Disney world, and it won’t be the last. We hope people who are trying to figure out what it’s like that this video gives them peace of mind!

While your family is enjoying yourself in Florida, other's are going to die because of not being able to afford to leave .
God bless the citizens who can't evacuate this hurricane 🙏

I was in Orlando when a storm hit our party. It only lasted a couple of days but rained a lot and we were able to get a flight out a few days later.

We scheduled our Disney world trip the first week of October. After the hurricane already passed. We stayed at movie resort. We were blessed with the weather. Every day was cloud free temperatures were in the low to mid 80s. Never would have believed a hurricane just passed a couple of days before.
But sure hope or family had a good time. We did.

Appreciate your video! It looks so lovely in the pool and hot tub. Was fun to see the inside of the grocery store as I’ve never been to Florida though I have cousins who have been there. Looks like you made the best of a difficult situation. Cheers!

We’re not expecting anything. But if any Disney executives read this, and they like to send us to Aulani in Hawaii, we would be happy to film our experience there to share! 😉
