      Wait people watch this show?? Like legitimately? I remember it airing for the first time and found it way too cheesy and childish. Couldn’t get into it really.
      Edit: no it’s not better than I think. I literally just said I tried watching it and couldn’t get into it. I was in high school when it came out. I can’t be better than I think if I’ve watched it to know that I don’t like it. Also heaps of people are saying the show only got worse as it went on meaning it’s not a matter of me not watching until it got good.

    In the old days, refrigerators used to latch closed. Kids would sometimes climb in and get stuck while playing, especially with abandoned fridges in junkyards and such. Since the 1950s, it's been legally required for manufacturers to build refrigerators without latches and ensure that they can be opened from the inside, and it's been generally taboo (not sure if there's any actual law or official rule) to show characters in kids' shows playing or otherwise climbing into their refrigerators (or other appliances, like washing machines).

    The reason it was censored is because they were worried kids would copy Zane and get stuck inside of a fridge. But the rules on what was allowed to be shown varied by country, some regions were fine with showing Zane in a fridge and others were more strict and refused because of the aforementioned reasoning.
    As a result, both versions aired in different places depending on the region. If countries with stricter rules, the aired the version with the note, in countries where they were more lenient, they showed Zane in the fridge. I even heard that some countries edited out the scene as a whole.

Unfortunately, this means children are often unsupervised around fridges, which is fine until they want to be like Zane and then get potentially stuck inside and suffocate.
      Remember, very old fridges have latches that can't be opened from the inside. I believe children died in the 50's and 60's because of this.

    I didn’t realize how incredibly amazing a kids show ninjago was, it wasn’t a terribly boring show for the adults due to above average story writing, it was a fun show for young kids due to a generally goofy style of humor, and didn’t look terrible, one of the few shows I watched when I was like 5 that I don’t rewatch and feel 50 layers of cringe

      For real. My dad and I would watch every episode on release and I think he enjoyed it just as much as I did. Hell, he still brings the show up every now and then and jokes about it. One of my families inside jokes is literally a reference to Ninjago.

    • @Obi-Wan_Kenobi
      @Obi-Wan_Kenobi 3 года назад +11

      The writing is way better than most kid shows, they often make jokes about things that young kids wouldn't understand. I'm not talking about innuendoes or "adult" jokes, either, the jokes were just referenced concepts and words kids wouldn't understand. Ninjago was really good about making cleaver writing and the writing only got better as the show got older because it aged up with its audience.
      I'd even go as far as to say that some of the later seasons like 8 and 9 and 15 are some of the best written animated shows ever made. I'm not even joking when I say those seasons approach Avatar the Last Airbender levels of quality, they are that good, the plot, characters, and even themes are extremely impressive and produce some fantastically emotional scenes.

    I'm not gonna lie, when I was trying to figure out why it was censored, I expected something much worse. My first instinct was they were worried about something related to the fridging trope. Weirdly glad to see it was just networks worrying about what kids would imitate.

  • @madeline5138
    @madeline5138 3 года назад +6

    Those of you who are wondering, they most likely censored it because kids would die in fridges a while back. Reason for this being, fridges used to only be able to open from the outside with a lever until they designed fridges to have magnetic sealing. So, you know, kids do as kids do, and they see a fridge on the side of the road and curiosity kicks in. Of course, most people would chain up fridges to prevent that if it could only be opened from the outside, but things still happened.
    Probably the most sensible reason why they did this though is that kids don't try to climb into the fridge at home to pull off the same gag.

      @@alexslusher16 Eh, I don't think its really anyone's fault. Heck, I saw Buddy put perfume in his mouth thinking it was candy in Elf when I was 5 and I thought it was funny, so I did the same thing. Had nothing to do with my parents, and they were very protective of me, it just never came to mind that "hey, don't spray perfume in your mouth" would be useful. Just how kids are until they gain critical thinking at a certain age. The targeted audience for Ninjago is for mostly little ones, so I can see their reasoning for that. Not saying that the gag isn't funny, I'm just indifferent and wanted to shed some light on the situation.
