"I hope someone will find it useful..." Bro, you will never know how useful your video really was. I am buying my first backpack and i had no clue in real terms what a 50 ltrs or 65 ltrs meant. Great video. Keep it coming.
Difference Engine (DE) agreed. I had huge troubles finding a 2nd pack, my regular one is nearly 10 years old, external frame. This was astronomically helpful in sizing ¡t up. The pictures and videos manufacturers have really dont show compassion so this was truly a helpful video
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account? I was dumb lost my login password. I would love any tricks you can give me!
@Walter Jordan Thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I realize this video is over 5 years old, but still INSANELY helpful!! Thank you!!! Perfect for helping me decide what size I need for traveling China!!
Just to update everyone! The point of the video was to show the "SIZE" of the packs not the quality or construction. Happy trails! Everyone can purchase whatever they want! I just happen to be brand loyal to Osprey (at the moment).
I've ordered an 80 liter azaker hiking backpack; seeing how small the 1.5 to 10 gallon (40 liters) are in your video, made me feel grateful for having the hindsight to buy mentioned 20 gallon bag to store all that I need for future quests and journeys. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. Good to get a visual on the packs. Especially since I've been looking into the Ospreys. The light on the lanyard tip alone makes this video worth it's weight in gold.
This was incredibly useful, and I will be using it again for future reference. Also, more than 300,000 people also found this video useful. Thanks for the upload, man!
Nice vid! I had someone asking for advice on packs and I suggested a size range but they had nothing to visualize what 50 liters was so I steered them here. Multiply liters by 61.024 to get cubic inches. Divide cubic inches by 61.024 to get an liters. Keep in mind that there is also no standard for measuring volume. Some manufacturers use sand and others use balls.
I have a deuter 40+10 and I am happy with it. It's enough for me to carry my light 2 person tent, sleeping bag, clothes and food. The pad is outside. I used it for 2 to 5 days in the mountains in the summer or for 1-2 days in the winter. It is a little small, I just have to choose my gear with more care. I also have a 15 l daypack for really fast day hikes or bike trips and a 32 liter pack that i never use.
dude - on fleet brother ! that video was literally what we were looking for... and right before u said that you hope someone will make use of the video we were thinking what a weird video... but definitely very worth it !
I just found your channel and subscribed...! Thanks for sharing this information with us...! I’m one of those people who could never visualize just how big a x-liter sized bag was so, I had no idea which was the correct size to fit my needs. Your presentation and visual comparisons of the different sized bags has helped so much...! I’m looking forward to seeing more. Happy New Year and Be Blessed...!
This was a very useful video. I've jumped through all sorts of hoops trying to visualise the different volumes. Everything from utilising various plastic tubs I have around the house and filling each with the gear I'll be taking and seeing if it all fits to using some old pieces of cardboard to replicate the dimensions of the main compartments of any pack that I felt might be suitable. Only by shopping online do I have access to a reasonable selection from which to choose but the bugbear of online shopping is not being to handle the merchandise in order to size it up for my purposes. Thanks for posting.
I'm taking the Jansport Katahdin 50L pack on my AT hike next year. I'm expecting about 32 pounds total weight with food and water. The bag weighs 2 pound 3 ounces and is selling for right around $50 with free shipping right now. Or you can buy an Osprey Atmos 50 that weighs 3 pound 7 ounces for $150. This was a great video for understanding volume but there are great packs available at 1/3 the price of Osprey. Research.
Great video! I finally bought a used LL Bean hiking backpack (18 x 11 x 6--about 32 to 43 litres) for $7. More than adequate for day hikes and to store clothing you have to take off for the duration of the hike, meals/snacks, camera etc. Rides lower on the back and less on the shoulders than the usual backpacks. The front straps make a huge difference in comfort.
You have no idea how much this video has helped me to choose the size I need. Thank you so much. I was going to buy a 90 Ltrs one but after this video I realized the size I need would be only 60 Ltrs. THANK YOU so much!
Thanks for the kind words and support! When I made the video I was thinking buying a hiking pack online is seriously a chore since you couldn't see the actual size on a self. Happy trails!
In the summer for 8 - 10 miles over 3 to 4 hours a 6l is all you need. I have a 12l for day hikes and 20l for something more serious. I think there is a time and a place for all sizes including the 6l.
The shoulder strap shows that Osprey is more for light weight and Deuter more for heavy duty. I have a Talon22, very good day pack, Deuter futura28, Deuter Aircontact 50 and Deuter Aircontact 75.
This is really helpful. You're right--you can't tell anything by looking at pictures online. I got a kick out of how much you stuffed into the bigger packs! I just ordered the newer Exos 48, which is actually 45 in the small size, and I'm wondering if it will be too big. It cinches down, and I can take the lid off too, which removes 9L, making it a 36, so maybe it won't be TOO big. Based on your video here, it definitely won't be too small! Thanks for taking the time to do this video! Still useful two years later, because general sizes remain about the same, even though the bags have changed.
Amen! Thnx for commenting. Till this day I'm shocked at how much this video has helped.. Thats why I had so many packs in the video!! Trial and my error lol
Thank you, a great informative video. this is a real problem when buying on line and not knowing the real size of what your getting. you cover whats needs to be covered and keep it simple. most informative backpack size video's I've watched. thanks again pal..
The problem I had finding a backpack was one that fit my 24 inch torso size. Some sites simply don't list that, or you cannot filter backpack search results for it. I finally did find one after about 3 weeks of searching.
Thanks so much, 1st really helpful video I've seen on different pack sizes. So glad I watched or I would have ended up with a HUGE pack that I couldn't even walk in . Cheers
very very very informative. You're right, if we just se it from the website, we dont even know how it looks like. With your video I can decide which size Im going for. Thanks !!!!
Jack Gray it looks like they don't carry the version I have but this is the closest thing avail now - www.ospreypacks.com/en/product/accessories/ultralight_grabbag
Thanks , when hiking is a new thing, figuring out equipment is tough. I have issues with going to sporting good stores. I am a larger than the normal hiker, people aren't very helpful . So I will go look but usually not physically touch it.
Thank your for this awesome video! it was very informative and since i am visual , it was great insight! thank you! i subscribed! Can't wait for all your future videos on hiking!
onza04 please can you help me .. i am a guy ... my hight is 5.5feet... normal not fat not slim .. which max bag size suites me .. i want little big bag .. i want to buy online i don't know how to chose size ..
onza thanks a million man !!! u r absolutely right ''a picture doesnt cut it'' !!! how the hell are we supposed to know how big the backpack if it isnt mounted on ahuman body. very helpful video thank u so much for taking the time to post it.
I wish I could do some addition tests for other companies but that would mean I would have to purchase the bags and you and I know these bags are not cheap!!
All mine and purchased myself. All the bags served a purpose and a certain time. I did return the 45 liter bag because I had the green one and it didn't make sense to keep that otherwise I own all the bags in the video.
Going to travel to Europe in Sumer 2018 and have always encountered people saying to get a 50L backpack for a month of travel. I'm 5'5, dont pack a lot of clothes, probably will bring a pair or running shoes and boat shoes.... what volume of backpack should i get?
30-40L is optimal imo. You will have to pack smart but the size to annoyance level is perfect. When I say annoyance, moving, picking, stashing the bag is better when it's under 50L. Good luck on your search!
Very Helpful - I hike alot with my dog and am trying to work out the best bag for this, your vid has really helped. Thank you SO much!!! Subscribed too. (yes I meant the capitals to emphasise).
Stuff the down Stuff it down You mentioned that it was kinda weird making a vid like this & that you hope viewers will find it useful.. Well I can assure you, I find it very useful. You're so right about needing to see the packs in 3D environment. Now I can visualize pack size in liters, whereas before I was kinda clueless 🙄😏 thank you so much - gaining insight is pretty exciting Lastly, your voice is perfect, well done. in 2 months I'm off to hike 522 miles across a northern Spain - the Camino de Santiago!!
One of the most informative videos I've seen on packs. Every time I look at packs online I'm thinking how does this thing look on a normally sized man or woman?
hi. i'm looking for a bag that can support 30 pounds. i wanted one with in the 40L range and more of a backpack/daypack design rather than one large pocket or a tube shaped thing. i'm not picky about ergonomics and creature comforts, but it has to have two shoulder straps. thanks.
It would be helpful if next to each pack in the description, you put an approximate weight each can carry. Maybe not what it CAN carry, but what is recommended or average for a pack that size. Thanks! Definitely one of the most useful videos I've seen. Keep it up!
Jonathan Rees Hey dude, that info is typically pretty readily available online so to me would have been redundant. I could add it to my description section just for added info. So thnx for the tip.
Do you have more compact, lighter set ups? It's crazy to go so big and heavy as most of these packs are made for these days with all the modern gear available. I used to pack like this thirty years ago. 20 lbs and under for a week, with a thirty liter pack, with all food, shelter and clothing is very doable, even without buying ultralight gear. Sub twenty pound loads are so comfortable and easy for getting to your daily camp and much safer as you have more energy for side trips and doing things around camp once there. Do you own an outdoor store and this is why you're showing these larger packs? The pack I 'would' use is that 34 liter one. Perfect for thru-hikes.
Hey rainbowhiker! My current day hiking bag is: 34 liters 1:20 Osprey Exos amzn.to/1Nj8fxO, why so many bags? Over time you start to mass bags! I've purchased every single bag shown and what I wanted to do is help avoid the 300k + viewers not to do what I did and buy only one or two bags in their lifetime not 100. PLUS I have other day bags that I didn't even put on the video. I think a 25 lb pack is perfect, but when you have a dog with you and need more room it's very challenging to hike with limited weight. If solo hiking it would be incredibly easier!
Invictus Dominatus I suggest trying a different brand. I don’t think the pack is very comfortable for long hikes. Mind you this is a budget brand pack so it will perform at a high value for price point.
This was extremely useful! I am planning to go on a longboard trip form the middle of the Netherlands to Paris (about 540km or so) and I was still unsure what size pack to go with. I found a very nice 55L pack online, for EUR 70. You don't happen to know anything about the "Active Leisure Tahoma Backpack - 55 Liters" in particular, would you?
Excellent and very useful video. Although "bigger is better" the weight is probably just as important as the size....for example my old pack weighs just over 5 pounds empty but my new one weighs only 3 pounds (both are 65 litres).
Truth, it's just the evolution of fabrics over time. Just because you have less weight doesn't typically mean the material will hold up better in the long run. It's all pro/cons with gear!
"I hope someone will find it useful..."
Bro, you will never know how useful your video really was. I am buying my first backpack and i had no clue in real terms what a 50 ltrs or 65 ltrs meant.
Great video. Keep it coming.
I second that! I'm in the SAAAMME exact boat. This was hugely helpful.
Difference Engine (DE) agreed. I had huge troubles finding a 2nd pack, my regular one is nearly 10 years old, external frame. This was astronomically helpful in sizing ¡t up. The pictures and videos manufacturers have really dont show compassion so this was truly a helpful video
Me too. I subscribed.
I can’t decide between the 50 or 65 either 😭 Great video :)
Three years later i agree i was CONfused as well ha
5 years later and it is way more useful than endless "this is what in my backpack" videos! Thanks man!
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb lost my login password. I would love any tricks you can give me!
@Jamie Matthias instablaster =)
@Walter Jordan Thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm.
Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Walter Jordan It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much you really help me out :D
@Jamie Matthias you are welcome =)
I realize this video is over 5 years old, but still INSANELY helpful!! Thank you!!! Perfect for helping me decide what size I need for traveling China!!
This video gives a visual reference for online shopping that is unmatched. Thank you so much.
This is one of the most informative backpack videos on RUclips.
Thanks after all these years it still delivers!! 😊
Just to update everyone! The point of the video was to show the "SIZE" of the packs not the quality or construction. Happy trails! Everyone can purchase whatever they want! I just happen to be brand loyal to Osprey (at the moment).
yark bags
Great video!! You're right, can't tell much from a picture on amazon. Thanks!! ( I just ordered a 30 liter, should be perfect for day hikes )
Thank you very much, really useful.
onza04 nicely done. Thank you.
Sweet thanks!
8 years down the line and this is the most helpful video I've seen... thanks!
I know the video is 7 years old BUT the fact this has almost 500k views shows that simplicity & being straight forward goes a long way
lol the video is still helping people since the turn of the century!
this is exactly the type of visualization i needed lol. looking at backpacks now online and its tough to decide what is the right size for me
Here we are in 2024 and I found this much more useful than many other articles and videos I found. Thank you!
I've ordered an 80 liter azaker hiking backpack; seeing how small the 1.5 to 10 gallon (40 liters) are in your video, made me feel grateful for having the hindsight to buy mentioned 20 gallon bag to store all that I need for future quests and journeys. Thanks!
Although posted 10 yrs ago, this is an excellent vid, and is a great demo, answers all the questions I have had. Thank you!!!
Thanks for the video. Good to get a visual on the packs. Especially since I've been looking into the Ospreys. The light on the lanyard tip alone makes this video worth it's weight in gold.

"Weird video I'm making.."
actually... i found it very useful!
I found it useful as well.

Im brand new to back packing and this is a great video to visually see what the different sizes look like, thanks!
Clear cut demonstration over there. One of the more Concise ones on youtube
dude - on fleet brother ! that video was literally what we were looking for... and right before u said that you hope someone will make use of the video we were thinking what a weird video... but definitely very worth it !
I just found your channel and subscribed...!
Thanks for sharing this information with us...!
I’m one of those people who could never visualize

Your presentation and visual comparisons of the
different sized bags has helped so much...!
I’m looking forward to seeing more.
Happy New Year and Be Blessed...!
Very helpful. You are correct....looking at pics online gives me no idea whatsoever how big a pack is
This was a very useful video. Ordering a pack online and was waffling between two sizes. Thanks for the visuals - it helped clarify what I was looking for!
I hear ya! Was impossible to buy the right sizing without a visual comparison.
This video popped up at the perfect time and was exactly what I needed to decide what size pack I needed. Thank You for making this video

Indeed you're the only one on youtube who thought of demonstrating backpacks sizes for online shoppers.
Extremely useful and helpful video for newbie backpackers, like myself. Thanks!
Great video! I finally bought a used LL Bean hiking backpack (18 x 11 x 6--about 32 to 43 litres) for $7. Buying my first backpack and your video helped me visualize the difference in sizes. Thank you so much!
Great overview! I've been shopping around for a first overnight bag and this was a great help in judging how big the different sizes are.
You have no idea how much this video has helped me to choose the size I need. Thank you so much. I was going to buy a 90 Ltrs one but after this video I realized the size I need would be only 60 Ltrs. THANK YOU so much!
+Vidit Horo Glad the video could help. Still blows my mind when I created this video.. NO ONE WOULD WATCH THIS.. boy was I wrong. Happy hikings!
dude great video, you're are right a picture simply does not cut it when buying such items. good job dude! saved me a lot of time
Very useful video, I'm a beginner with all of these things and you helped me out big time
Thanks for putting an effort that's worth watching every second.. very helpful.
Thanks for the kind words and support! When I made the video I was thinking buying a hiking pack online is seriously a chore since you couldn't see the actual size on a self. Happy trails!
Yup.. well said and you made an effort by coming forward to help others.. impressive.. thanks again.
I noticed that you thought it was a strange video you were making but this was the exact kind of video I was looking for haha thank you
Great video man! Really appreciate you taking the time to show us how they scale up in size.
In the summer for 8 - 10 miles over 3 to 4 hours a 6l is all you need. I have a 12l for day hikes and 20l for something more serious. I think there is a time and a place for all sizes including the 6l.
Thanks for the useful video! I couldn't decide between a 65L and an 80L. Now that I've seen the vid I know a 65L pack will be more than enough space.
That was great. I am doing just that, looking at liters of backpacks and not sure of the size. This has helped me out so much.
thanks. that was quite helpful. i was wondering if a 60 litre pack would be good enough for what i do and i think i'm gonna go with an 80.
Thanks for the info man very helpful. I don't know why most companies only take a photo of the bag with no reference on how it would someone's back
The shoulder strap shows that Osprey is more for light weight and Deuter more for heavy duty. I have a Talon22, very good day pack, Deuter futura28, Deuter Aircontact 50 and Deuter Aircontact 75.
Thanks for this video! This is exactly what I needed to decide which size of backpack I should get for my trip.
This is really helpful. You're right--you can't tell anything by looking at pictures online. I got a kick out of how much you stuffed into the bigger packs! I just ordered the newer Exos 48, which is actually 45 in the small size, and I'm wondering if it will be too big. Thanks for taking the time to do this video! Still useful two years later, because general sizes remain about the same, even though the bags have changed.
Amen! Thnx for commenting. Till this day I'm shocked at how much this video has helped.. Thats why I had so many packs in the video!! Trial and my error lol
Though I can't afford most of this bags, it did help me get an idea what I need. :) Thanks!
Man your video is incredibly awesome and I’m watching it during the crazy epidemic corona virus, thanks bro
This is quite helpful. Thank you for posting this. The only thing I thought you could've mentioned was measuring yourself to get the best fit.
Cheers
Very helpful, just about to set out on a 630 mile hike (not in one go!), and needed to know comparative sizes. Thanks.
I had no idea what 40L, 50L, 65L looked like. I found the video very useful
the best backpacking review video on i've seen on RUclips Thank You
Hey, Thanks for this video!!! I am picking up a 50 liter bag In a few days and had no idea how big it was. Thank you!
very very very informative. You're right, if we just se it from the website, we dont even know how it looks like. With your video I can decide which size Im going for. Thanks !!!!
what was the osprey pouch you had on your shoulderstraps of your pack
Jack Gray it looks like they don't carry the version I have but this is the closest thing avail now - www.ospreypacks.com/en/product/accessories/ultralight_grabbag
Thanks , when hiking is a new thing, figuring out equipment is tough. I have issues with going to sporting good stores. I am a larger than the normal hiker, people aren't very helpful . So I will go look but usually not physically touch it.
Thanks for all the positive support on this video! If you want to see additional details on any of the packs, please post below!
Thank your for this awesome video! it was very informative and since i am visual , it was great insight! thank you! i subscribed!
Can't wait for all your future videos on hiking!

thank you SO much
now i know ill only need the 45L one (not osprey though)
you are super cool
Glad I could help.
How about doing the same thing for other companies, such as Gregory?
I wish I could do some addition tests for other companies but that would mean I would have to purchase the bags and you and I know these bags are not cheap!!
What you say is that all those bags are yours?? Wow
All mine and purchased myself. All the bags served a purpose and a certain time. I did return the 45 liter bag because I had the green one and it didn't make sense to keep that otherwise I own all the bags in the video.
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to show all these comparisons.
Thanks for commenting! Make sure you thumbs up.
Hey where did you get the side strap velcro pocket from? Can't find any online
Blue one? Or the grey one? I see two kinds! Thanks
this video has been super useful. it totally helped me figure out what size I needed. thank you so much
Very useful info man! Thanks! You answered my question. 45L for me.
I absolutely found this video timeless and useful
Exactly what I was looking for and the only place I could find it. Thank you.
Going to travel to Europe in Sumer 2018 and have always encountered people saying to get a 50L backpack for a month of travel. I'm 5'5, dont pack a lot of clothes, probably will bring a pair or running shoes and boat shoes.... what volume of backpack should i get?

Thank you for making this video! It puts the bag sizes in perspective really well!
Very Helpful - I hike alot with my dog and am trying to work out the best bag for this, your vid has really helped. Thank you SO much!!! Subscribed too. (yes I meant the capitals to emphasise).
Stuff the down
Stuff it down
You mentioned that it was kinda weird making a vid like this & that you hope viewers will find it useful..
Well I can assure you, I find it very useful. You're so right about needing to see the packs in 3D environment. Now I can visualize pack size in liters, whereas before I was kinda clueless 🙄😏 thank you so much - gaining insight is pretty exciting
Lastly, your voice is perfect, well done.
in 2 months I'm off to hike 522 miles across a northern Spain - the Camino de Santiago!!
This video was very helpful, very useful, thanks for posting it. And nice TMNT reference!
thank you!!!! wish I would have seen this before buying a few packs ...you are right..a picture on an add doesn't show what you need to know
Do down jackets & sleeping bags compress well? Or is this dependent on specific materials choice?
One of the most informative videos I've seen on packs. Every time I look at packs online I'm thinking how does this thing look on a normally sized man or woman?
Atmos 50 liter would be good for the jmt? 6’3 190 pound guy.
Its 2017 november and its still a verry verry useful video thanks men
hi. i'm looking for a bag that can support 30 pounds. i wanted one with in the 40L range and more of a backpack/daypack design rather than one large pocket or a tube shaped thing. i'm not picky about ergonomics and creature comforts, but it has to have two shoulder straps.
Is the bag being up over your shoulders just a compromise you have to make with bags over 30L?
I got the TMNT reference. Bebop - Rocksteady, hehe.
Nice Vid bro.
Happy Trails!
hei man im going to stay in Chile for 20 days.
i bought one 42L. do you think this is ok or should I use a bigger one for twenty days?
Hi there iam jay what do you think of the mauntain top pack?
Do you have more compact, lighter set ups? It's crazy to go so big and heavy as most of these packs are made for these days with all the modern gear available. I used to pack like this thirty years ago. 20 lbs and under for a week, with a thirty liter pack, with all food, shelter and clothing is very doable, even without buying ultralight gear.
How is the support on the mountainsmith? Is it comfortable for long hikes?
Invictus Dominatus I suggest trying a different brand. I don’t think the pack is very comfortable for long hikes. Mind you this is a budget brand pack so it will perform at a high value for price point.
Useful to see comparisons like this. Thanks for sharing it.
Urmm...How tall are you? I'm 5.2 feet so I want to know how big/small those bags in comparison to my size.
5'7" I would say similar frame then

Thanks! Great video btw. In that case I would go for 46-50 L for my standard travelling backpack. :-)
I thought the same thing... I'm 5'1 and I worried about packing too much weight. Or if the pack would be extremely high over my head lol
great vid!
Hi! Thanks for this...what is that pouch attached to the front of the 65 Mountainsmith, and how is it attached? Thanks
+Bob_the_Bomb the little pouch is made by osprey, I actually upgraded that little pouch with a thing called "ribz" google that.
was hoping you'd say what size is best for an overnight, for a weekend, for a week, for a two week trip
Thank you! This is THE most useful youtube video I've ever seen
I'm going to go with what most are saying. This was a great video that was VERY useful in helping me to make a decision between packs. Thanks so much!
thanks buddy this helped me loads , i nearly purchased 75l , but thanks to you i now know i only need 40-50, you da man,
What kind of trip are you doing and what are you bringing to need over 50 liters?
+Joey Thomas I am not into the ultralight scene. I bring what I want to bring and 50 liters seems about right
Excellent and very useful video.
Thank you for posting. Its really helpful. I am ordering one from amazon, but was unsure about the realistic size. Now i am clear.
✌
What are your thoughts about Vango backpacks? I am thinking of purchasing Teton 4000. Any idea about that?
Great video! Just what I was looking for to see what size I need. Thank you.
