I've only recently (thanks to lockdown) got into hiking. I'm slowly building my stamina up for Hadrian's Wall which I hope to do April/May 2021. This video is super helpful. As are all your videos! Thank you
Good video & lots of ideas for kit. We are experienced hikers & are doing this with our daughters next April. One thing I have that you didn’t mention, is a hiking solar panel so I can charge what I need to at night. Good kit though & it’s always good to get other people’s perspectives. PS: I know how to use a compass! 😂
@@billyspencer7325 of course not, however, the solar panel charges the battery pack through the day so it’s fully charged to charge devices overnight. I didn’t honestly think THAT would need explanation, but here we are 🤷♂️
Just got back from walking hadrians wall 2dayd ago and with the lockdown it’s starting to get well overgrown 👀 waterproof pants and Boots are essential even with morning dew iv walked days with soggy socks thinking no rain no wet feet 🤦
Ben Williams sorry about late reply it never showed up 🙄 and parts of it are just walking through fields with grass what’s 8inchs etc what as you can imagine gets rather wet in the early hours so waterproofs in the morning are a top tip 😂 hope you enjoy your walk 👌
Ben Williams still amazing views what take your mind off wet feet 😂 looks like you made it back in good time for the weather aswell that makes all the difference, I was amazed at how busy it gets at sycamore gap even through the week it’s a busy place, the steps up the crag near sills are daunting as you look up 😂
You forgot toilet paper😊 or did i miss that? Im saving for a one week trip for a hike in scotland. I need some new hiking trousers, maybe rain outfit, a bigger backpack and some drybags. Its brutal how expensive hiking stuff is in switzerland, if you look for quality stuff. I have the akto too, i‘ll try to stuff it in the backpack.
Of the long trails you have hiked in the UK, which would you most likely recommend. If you had to choose only 1. I am coming to the UK (from Canada) for a long walk. I will have about 7 to 10 days to hike (plus 2 days on the front of that for travel and 2 days on the back of that for travel). I have extensive camping experience and some hiking experience. I am accustomed to remote areas (Canada).
Thats an ace question. Well with that length of time you could either take on two shorter walks, or one medium length. The longer ones take 2+ weeks to walk. Maybe you could do a variety such as the West Highland Way (that will show you a bit of Scotland) and Hadrian's Wall? It depends what you want in a trail. Mountains - Cumbria Way, West Highland Way, Breacons Way etc.. Coastal Path - South West Coastal Path, Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, Isle of Wight Coastal Path etc... Archaeology - Hadrian's Wall, Ridgeway etc... Seeing the UK countryside - Thames path, Two Moors Way, Cotswold Way, Yorkshire Wolds Way, Cleveland Way, South Downs Way etc... I have deliberately only highlighted walks you could complete with the time you have, except the south west coastal path, although it is easy to do a stretch of that. If you did the SWCP then I would suggest walking linear either through Dorset or Cornwall. You could aim to do the entire Dorset Coastal stretch or something like that. Hope this helps!
Excellent video....hopefully will walk this soon !! Have to sort out my missus with some gear, and will need a 2 person tent, and a 12V hairdryer !!! 👍👍👍
Really useful video. Thank you. Just one thing, do you have any idea what the total weight was as I don't recall you mentioning the total weight you carry for that kind of walk. Your videos have helped inspire me and I am looking to do one of the national trails with my dog at some point in the future to try and improve my mental and physical health. Just in the process of planning and preparing but I have reservations as she is a very large mountain dog and i've got stuck before in the lake district up on a mountain in bad weather when I haven't been able to lift her over a stile which was a bit worrying at the time. Anyway, looking forward to your next adventure.
Good video Abbie. You make me want to try you tubing at some point. If I ever do, you’ll have watch and like if it’s not too bad. Then I’ll have at least one view and a like. When you say, This here and That there it sounds very American. Thanks for sharing.
hi Abbie have you done the unofficial one of the hardest trails in the British isles . The cape wrath. I have done the last couple of sections up to the light house . I was just wondering if you have done the full trail and ha e any tips cheers ..
Great video, but I have a question. Toilets are few and far between on this walk and there doesn't seem to be a lot of tree cover in some parts, I'm not a hiker, so what happens when you have to pee ? Sorry if that's a weird question.
Hi, i always wanted to the hadrian's walk, i like your video. I have a question in some website i read that there is not place for camping in the wild so i need to book a bed and breakfast or other types of accomodation. Is it true? Thanks Alessandra
Interested to hear that goes for you, I don't think mine has always done it, I'm not sure if it's the distance or increaseing weight has started it, last weekend was 12Kg, and completed it's 25th mile. It's the frame that's squeaking in mine, sounded higher up...
It was hard to locate the sound as I was on my own, I was carrying around 14 or 15 kg . does the kestrel 58 have a frame ? Its just annoying like a rattle in a car lol
@@AbbieBarnesWILD Hi again. Yes, I was asking about the orange jacket. Myself, I have the Atom LT for colder weather and the Atom SL for everything else :-)
Hey Abbie, I love your videos! Thanks for this one as well. One thing I noticed, though - seems to be quite a heavy load you have there for such a "short" outing. Of course, you mention the functional vs ultralight thing, so we are all different. Me - I came in around 4,5kg for 400 kilometers on the Camino de Santiago. I got everything into the Osprey Talon 33 with space to spare :-)
@@AbbieBarnesWILDMy Camino Packing-list: 2 light Polos, 2 Shorts, 3 Undies, 3 Pairs of socks, very light Deuter Sleeping Bag, North Face rain jacket (extremely light), long-sleeve warm layer. Then the usual: toiletries (folding toothbrush, little bottle of show gel, small tube of toothpaste), super lightweight Sea To Summit towel, tiny first-aid kit, tiny flashlight, 1 Cash-Card, Passport, phone and charger, water bottle. And that's all she wrote. Plenty of room left over inside the pack to carry food and drink bought along the way...
Great to hear a girl who has a passion for long distance walking.
A squeaky Osprey is like winning a really bad raffle 😂 it’s pot luck it seems!

@@dannyburns2166 No. It got postponed because of lockdown. Planning to go May 2022.
Have you done it?
@@Rendarion I did. May 2022. And it was wonderful! I’ve since walked the Great Glen Way and I’m planning to do the Wye valley next.

Fantastic video and very helpful. I'm walking the Wall in 3 weeks with my wife and daughter and this made me even more excited. Thanks.
Sounds like you'll have the best time. Do enjoy!

Nice set up , my osprey 58 has a squeak also 😂😂

Doing this later this year. Are their enough water points in the way or places to collect & filter?
I'd bring a filter :)
Weight in kgs pls
I would take some form of a pillow rolled up clothes don’t cut it for me!
