    This is super super helpful. I had two melons around back that I've been asking persons about but no one gave me good advice as to know when they are ripe.
    I watched this video half way through and ran straight outside in the dark with my cellphone light. Checked the curly q and recognized it was dried all the way back. Got that melon inside the house and split it right open.
    Its fully ripe and very sweet. Thanks for the advice it's the best I've gotten.

    Thank you for this video. This is my 1st year growing watermelons, and I chose to grow a few different varieties, including the Crimson Sweet. (I'm also in Georgia) I've been scared to death of picking them too early, because I know that once it's been picked, what you've got is what it's going to be. Now I'll definitely be out there checking the condition of those "Curly Q's" first thing in the morning! 🙂Thanks again!

    We used to grow the Charleston Grey melons. I always go by the curly 'q' to make sure the water melon is ready to be picked.
    It's nothing like getting in the garden in the early morning and busting open a cool sweet watermelon. Bring some salt so when you grab the heart out it's the best.

    My melon was a nice color, yellow patch at bottom, some on top, but when I tried this method (of the brown curly cue at junction being all brown) it was totally underripe inside--a little red/pink, but mostly white flesh inside . Maybe it needs to be the Georgian variety for this method to work?

I lived in Morocco 4 years and the best watermelon on the planet is from agadir Morocco. I planted mine back in April. The plant grew but no watermelon. I just found out while we were going to clear the garden because everything died out that 4 watermelons grew. 2 of them are large like the video but the color is still light green. Since it is a late bloomer and I dont know when they grew out. Do I still follow the stem? The Curly q looks dried out but the watermelon is still light green. The outer skin is very smooth still.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  7 лет назад +1

      The color is not a good indicator because the sun can bleach the melons. Use the curly Q as your best indicator.

  • @davidazinger5639
    @davidazinger5639 6 лет назад +1

    at 2:50 you can hear the loud cracking sound when it opens; the louder that sound the less ripe the watermelon is. As it ripens the outer shell softens up; too ripe and that outer rind is too soft, another indicator. So, when you are at the store, too soft = too ripe, and too firm (has no give) = immature, not quite ripe. It needs to give just slightly (somewhat like an avo) but even when the rind feels "in between" its not a perfect indicator; its always a gamble. Watermelon is always a gamble but there is no reward without a little risk !!! thanks for the video -- but video more for the gardener than the consumer !! And I have had a garden -- he who can grow a melon deserves the fruit thereof !

    Hi, I have a couple of questions. I've read where some people choose to add a tablespoon or so of borax (boron) mixed with water to their vines, because it supposedly increases the likelihood of flowers turning to fruit, and it also makes the fruit sweeter. Do you have an opinion on that? Also, aside from the larger melons, I still have flowers and a few baby melons popping up in my garden, do you think it's still possible at this point for them to reach maturity here in Georgia? Thanks in advance!

      Never heard of adding Borax to enhance pollination. Bees usually take care of that for us. It's not too late, although the heat can take quite a toll on the plants this time of year.

      NubianP6 All plants benefit from Boron because it’s the element that starts all the others cascading. Think of it as the key to your car. If you don’t have it, you’re not going anywhere.

    Is this the same for all types of watermelon? I have crimson sweet, but I also have cherry grande and sugar baby.

    Thank you for the tips! But I have a question, if you're getting your melon at the store and there's no tendril, how should you check?
    Also, I have to say, eatting 1-2 melons a day... wouldn't that, you know, make you have to "go"? Or does your body just get used to it? I ate 1 melon to myself once... once. (Sat in the bathroom for a while with the "scoots")

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  6 лет назад

      If you're getting one at the store, there's really no true way to tell. We must be used to it, because eating one a day doesn't seem to bother us.

    The trick is to be able to tell which watermelon to pick from the grocery store or produce market! I've always went for the one that had the yellowest belly and would kind of give or make a cracking sound when you push on it. Any other advice Mr. Hoss? Man, I am enjoying y'alls videos!

    What's the risk of leaving them a few days after you see that the curly branch is dried all the way? I mean how long does it take for them to get over-ripened?

    Where are the real watermelons and what are those little round grapefruit shaped things. When I was young in central Arkansas, a watermelon was generally about a foot and a half to two feet long. Oh, those little round things were around. We called them "ice box melons" but people usually didn't even bother with them.

      Size isn't always an indicator of quality. Nothing wrong with a good 10-15 pound watermelon.

    That method doesn't help us in the store if its sweet. I have gotten many that were not sweet at all. So ripeness does not mean sweetest

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  5 лет назад

      You are correct. It does not help at all for the grocery store buyer. That's why we recommend growing your own.

    Been growing watermelons for years in NC and have never seen the dead curl method fail.A green melon does have a white or light colored bottom.

    • @gardeningwithhoss

      The belly color is definitely a great secondary ripeness indicator.

    Excellent wisdom. I'm on my 4th season of growing melons and I only use the tendril turning brown. Sometimes the variety has a spoon leaf also and it turns brown as well.

  • @pozeidon31
    @pozeidon31 7 лет назад +4

    My watermelons are already extremely big maybe 1ft6in or maybe a bit more... the tendril is totally green and full of life... that means i have to wait longer right?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  7 лет назад +2

      Correct. When the tendril is dried, the plant has delivered enough water and nutrients to the fruit. Until then, those are still being delivered.

    • @pozeidon31
      @pozeidon31 7 лет назад

      thanks man! ill keep watering them :) Another question... should I lift them from the soil with a plastic plate (upside down)? I heard they should be separated from the soil but so far they have been growing fine...

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  7 лет назад +4

      We leave ours on the dirt and they always do just fine. We grow way too many to use a technique like that.

      I just found grub worms eating holes in the bottoms of my watermelons! and I used milky spore last year. now I have tiles and plastic lids under mine. btw, what if I pick an unripe watermelon? will it get ripe off the vine?

  • @1royalpalm
    @1royalpalm 6 лет назад

    That's all well and good for one trying to determine in the field (before the watermelon is picked) if a watermelon is ripe -- but how does the consumer at the market/store/roadside stand/pickup truck, etc., determine if a picked melon is ripe? That's what I thought this video was about.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  6 лет назад

      There is no consistent way to tell if it has already been picked. That's probably why you're having a hard time finding a video that will tell you that.

    • @1royalpalm
      @1royalpalm 6 лет назад +1

      I wasn't looking for a video to tell me how to assess if a picked watermelon was ripe, but I stumbled upon the above video, and it interested me, as I thought it might give me (or my wife) some pointers in assessing if a melon that had already been picked was ripe. I've heard about the thumping, the color of the melon belly, etc., and that's what I thought the video would be about. My wife has been buying me seedless melons from Publix all summer long, and thus far they've been pretty good. She lets the produce manager or associate pick them out for her. In any event, you grow watermelons, so you would know that there is no fire way to tel if a watermelon is totally ripe, but I did learn about telling if they are ripe while still on the fine -- so I enjoyed the video anyway.
