- If you had been a patient of Dr. Henry Aloysius Cotton from 1917 - 1930, the idea of having your teeth removed to cure your mental illness would not have been far-fetched. As a matter of fact, his mental patients who ONLY had their teeth removed were the lucky ones. Because he preached that the cause of mental illness was infection in the body, and whatever was infected didn’t need to be treated, but removed.
So, if the source of your insanity was beyond your teeth, he might need to remove your tonsils or other organs.
These are all methods that Dr. Henry Cotton used to treat mental illness. And his methods were actually praised by people in and out of the medical profession. People were mesmerized by him and believed whatever he said. And he loved every minute of it.
I think that before this story is over, we’ll all be wondering how this guy was EVER allowed to practice medicine. Behind the closed doors of the facilities he ran, he was a butcher - not a doctor.
And just in case you're wondering, Dr. Cotton's character made an appearance in HBO's hit series, Boardwalk Empire.

@@TisHotMessHistory I like that you cover a lot of original topics. Most creators just seem to copy each others’ stories. One person does a video on new topic. Next thing you know, everyone has done a video on the same thing.
One of my favorite professors in college went over Dr. Cotton in one of his lectures. He passed away right after that semester ended, but I know that if he had seen your video, he would be taking copious notes and would probably give you a standing ovation at the end. Excellent video, as always!

Just like today, people in the medical industry only care about money. They poison us in every way, then we have greedy doctors that are quacks or choose not to do their jobs, especially for poor people. Travesty.

There are still bad doctors! They get protected by the institutions that they practice their procedures in just placing a complaint does not necessarily mean that anything's going to happen to remove them. So unsuspecting new

Theres a show called "the alienist". Its what they called psych drs i believe in the late 1800's. Maybe early 1900's. Anyway, a character in the show was feel down after giving birth. Her husband took her to the doctor. The dr started with removal of the teeth. When that didn't work he wanted to remove something else.
I wonder if this doctor is who they were depicting in the show.
I've never heard of the show. But I can tell you that I saw several articles that referred to Cotton as an alienist. The show could have been based on him or loosely based on him or someone who followed his practices. Interesting!

This doctor was a nightmare!! The east coast and the south sure kept up appearances. Older white guys supporting each other. Ignoring the woman's report isn't surprising. Even today, ego and pride are more important than actual help supposedly offered or promised. 😢

One of my aunts had an allergic reaction to her deodorant. Instead of helping her cure the reaction, he told her to stop using any deodorant. We know there are natural products which may be used as deodorant, or she could have used a different kind of deodorant. Imagine the social stigma poor auntie suffered as a result of the doctor's poor recommendation? You must become actively involved in your own medical care, not leave it all up to the doctors. The doctor in the video was doing some experimentation with his people. Moreover, sometimes they do not give the best medical advice.

I would say that psychiatry is not quite that bad today. The psychiatrists that I have seen are not up to par. I was suffering PTSD. They couldn't get me to talk, so they ended up diagnosing me with 15 things other than that. I couldn't speak because for 8 months I was told to not look at people, and don't speak. (By my "loving" family) I learned that if you can't get your client to talk, you can't diagnose. They prescribe you drugs. I don't have a chemical imbalance. All they end up doing is burning your neurons or something like that
