    I bought the RT 85 last year. I figured I would just go all the way to the top of their line. I've been pretty happy with it and I do prefer the acrylic platter over the metal one. Some people don't like the Ortofon 2m Blue, but it sounds fine to me. I can always change or upgrade the cartridge so I feel like I can still make it sound better or change the sound down the road. For $500 bucks, I think it is a deal.

    I've had my RT83 for almost 4 years and have no reason to get a different turntable. And the fact that I was able to get it for a good price years ago, but still be able change out things like the platter and cartridge at a later date, is a huge pro-consumer thumbs up. I'm basically able to upgrade my 83 to an 85 by just changing a few small pieces that are designed to be easily switched out. I like having my tech having some level of modularity and repairability.

    i owned a pro-ject debut carbon evo first and my fluance rt-85 is waaaaaaay better. pro-ject had: transient humming issues, non-removable headshell, and an inferior anti-skip design (you have to hang a fishing lure instead of just turn a dial).

    The funny thing is neither Ortofon 2M Red nor 2M Blue with its higher compliance is really suitable for a tonearm this heavy. This inevitably results in... uhm... let's say, an altered sound signature.
    Which, surprisingly for an older audiphile, might be actually appreciated by the young beginners.
    Or they just don't mind the cartridge resonance calculator on VE and just listen to their stuff 😁
    It is also worth mentioning 2M Blue is one of the best if not THE best sounding and tracking cartridge in its price range, period.

    Does Fluance sell a direct drive automatic? Bought an AT-LP120 USB was very disappointed it was fully manual. Of course I just assumed the tone arm would arrive back to its home after playing the record. I mean, I've only been playing vinyl on record players since the mid 1950's!!! They all were automatic. Was really upset when I find they make them in this day and age MANUAL.

    I took that last lump of cash I had accumulated before my retirement and invested it in my RT-84. Best lump of cash I have spent since.....this turntable is worth every penney! Every other turntable I considered was either more than twice the price for essentially less turntable, or just totally so unimaginable I couldn't see wasting my money on. I mean, for chrisakes, is it so hard to stick in a speed switch and an auto stop? They could take people's money and laugh all the way to the bank, but they didn't get to do it with mine! I bought an RT81 several months ago after considerable research and after about a 30 year hiatus with vinyl. I wanted something inexpensive but it had to look good AND I needed to be able to switch out the stylus so I could play 78s (to digitize), as well as a way to input into a computer. While it would have been nice to have automatic or even semi, Fluance fit the bill.

      I also purchased a RT-82 and upgraded the stylus. Consider swapping out the 10 stylus for a 30. They're $300 which is the cost of the entire RT-82, but the improvement is substantial. That's about as much cart as the Fluance can handle and I think you'd be incredibly happy with it. Having recently upgraded my TT to a Technics SL-100C I feel the upgrade from 10 to 30 stylus was at least as significant as the TT upgrade, if not more significant.

  • @dirtyths
    @dirtyths 2 года назад +2

    Allthough I generally appreciate your no bullshit down to earth approach to hi-fi for the beginner, I have to point out a few elements here that seem debatable to me, if i may.
    Like the detachable headshell. I don't think this is so great an advantage. Not so many listeners may want to swap cartridges all the time, not to mention that you will have to recalibrate if it's a different cart; it's not that fast. Because why would you want to change for the same cart, right? Removable headshells were mainly meant to allow quick cart swap if accidents happened in broadcast and DJing situations. But for the casual listener? Not to mention that it's an unnecessary mechanical and electrical junction. Personnally, I only use fixed headshells, It's also a good thing that you learn how to install carts by yoursell too. And I don't think it's actually easier to align a cart on a removeable headshell. You still have to use a protractor on the table to do a proper job. It easier to install, though, i'll give you that.
    The other thing about their line of products that bugs me, and you mentionned it yourself, is that upgrades are mainly cartridges. What kind of TT value is that? You may go and buy any cart out there if you want a better one. The thing is that you never really get a better turntable. Spindle, motor, tonearm, plinth are all the same. I've experienced an RT81 at the shop, once (I sell sell and repair TTs) and I notice it's poor built quality. The azimut was far from on point, I had to adjust the lift and correct the speed and in the end, it just made a Nagaoka MP110 ($219.CND) sound harsh with bad confused bass response and no "tone". Yep, that was an upgrade allright! Worse than an Ortofon OM5. It was a shocking experience to me. I can only conclude an Ortofon 2M Blue on this arm would partly be a waste. I haven't tried the acrylic platter, though. So, what they basically have is good relationships with cartridge manufacturers from which they buy in bulk and a plant in Taiwan.
    As for adjustable feet, sure it's a fine feature, but leveling the piece of furniture your TT stands on is an even better idea.
    A few Audio Technica models under $500 have electronic speed control. But i don't care doing it by hand, and I spin many 45's. It's as you wish, it's just about where the money goes. I would prefer a better tonearm. Same for auto stop. There's really not much wear in the run out groove, there's no signal there. Only, if it's a very sloppy press, you'll hear it loud and you'll run to lift the arm!
    All this said, you still might be right, I don't know if there's any other TT at $300 or $500 price point that sound better and is as convenient. I haven't heard a UTurn TT yet. Have you? Audio Technica makes many TTs too under $500 besides the LP120. Haven't heard them all either, but the LPW50 is pretty decent. Music Hall is to be considered too. But they're all closer to $500 than to $300.
    I'm not sure, but I really hope there are other options.
    I hope i didn't sound rude, I'm just not good enough in english , so I go straight to the point.

    @QoraxAudio 2 года назад +3

    About auto stop: most of the more expensive turntables don't have that either nowadays.
    They tend to be fully manual.
    Semi-automatic and automatic turntables of high quality are often vintage turntables like the Sony Biotracer or Technics SL-15.

    I see quite a few comments preferring the Audio Technica LP-120XUSB. My problem with that unit is it comes with a preamp and USB capabilities. Two things I don't need and don't want to pay for. Four big reasons not to get one. The counterweight/stylus force is impossible to set up. Once the counterweight is balanced, the stylus force dial does nothing but spin. And the balance point is nowhere near the "clocks" you're looking for when putting it on. Oh, and the anti-skate? Set it to the "right" force and it whips to the outside so aggressively you'd think it was auto-returning. Oh, and the "auto stop" doesn't. And the manufacturer apparently doesn't give a crap. This was on a top of the line unit.

    • @TexasScout
      @TexasScout 2 года назад +2

      I had my RT-84 up and running in 30 minutes. I had none of this problems. All I used was a stylus gauge and a protractor. Anti Skate works fine. Auto stop takes a little longer than I would like, but it works fine.

  • @SeeTeeShock

    If you swap cartridges, you'll probably have to at least rebalance the arm, and dial in the correct VTF. Not quite 3 secs. So quick hot swapping may not be possible without, say, two "identical" arms, etc.

    • @ptg01
      @ptg01 2 года назад

    • @SeeTeeShock

      @@ptg01 I suspect you mean VTA - vertical tracking angle - whereas VTF is the vertical tracking force at the cartridge stylus, as set by adjusting the tonearm counterweight once the arm has been properly balanced to "float" with zero VTF.

    I also consider Fluance about the best value and quality table on the market for the price and If I still didnt have my old Harman Kardon T40 from back in the days when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth and still working beautifully I would buy one in a minute - and I still may because I really like what I see with Fluance design. I grew up in the 70's and 80's when even the cheapest entry level plastic base turntables from say, JVC & others had a knob or switch for the speed control etc, as well as swappable headshells, auto return etc. - this malarky of so called "high end' manufacturers making you swap belts on an (exposed) pulley (?!) to change speeds and saying its to "reduce noise" is a lame cheesy sales ploy to cheapen the design and its ludicrous, they do it so they dont have to include any kind of electronic or mechanical speed change mechanism so they save money and engineering cost, simple as that. You even see this on uber custom european high end tables costing thousands albiet for different reasons such as overall designs that require it, but in the real world ill be damned if im paying a grand or more (or much more) and having to manually change belts on a pulley like its some kind of Harbor Freight drill press. Same with swappable headshells, it costs more to make a tonearm with a threaded cartridge heaadshell fitting than to just stamp out some kind of tube and flatten it on the end as if it came out of a bench vise in someones basement - theres nothing exotic about it, its just more cost saving and selling it as "a lightweight minimalist tonearm" - BS - but I love the Fluance approach of good quality, value and performance at a sane price. Id be happy with just an RT81 as it has the internal belt, even Fluance does the external belt thing and i just dont care for it, many are OK with it but then im an old guy stuck in my old ways- UGH-!!

    I have a Fluance RT-85N which complements my prmary TT, a Technics SL-1200 wiith an Audio technica high end cartridge. They both sound great but I have a gripe with Fluiance about their design. They could learn a lot from Technics by observing how the markings on the tone arm counterweight are done. The technics sets then standard for how to mark a counterweight. Bright white markings that are clear and legible without any special lights, glasses or razor sharp eyesight.
    It's a big deal when you have multiple headshells and want to switch out cartridges quickly without a lot of fanfare, othuerwise I'm a fan of Fluance.

I also had it gone through by Joel, The Turntable Guy, before he passed. It's basically the 1200 without the slide pitch control plus this one is full auto and still direct drive. I don't have the spouse to tell me how to spend my money, so I can buy whatever my paycheck can buy. However, besides the occasional cartridge and headshell I think I'm set. Is there something that I'm missing by not having that Fluance 85?
    Please, those with knowledge of Technics let me know what you think.

    Exciting = 2m Blue? Laid back = MP 110? What, I think it is exactly the other way around. To be honest, I don't understand the hype about the completely overpriced Ortofon 2m cartridges. Flat, supposedly neutral sound for a comparatively high price. There's actually nothing exciting about it.

  • @QoraxAudio

    Even for more experienced hifi enthusiasts, having a few different cartridges has value.
    You can use the cartridge to change the sound of your system to fit with the music/record.
    I own about 15 cartridges and they're all tradeoffs - they're good at something and perform less in other areas.
    It's also part of the fun of playing records to be able to do this.
    From a cheap MM cartridge to a more fancy MC cartridge, they all get to play every now and then.

    If you can manage $600 and just want one turntable to never tweek and just sound good as is forever, I'd go rega P1, I just like that long tonarm. For more flex with upgrades there is the debut carbon evo at $600. At $500 the best value is that rt85n. But at $400 I like that uturn with a grado. Or with a preamp built in the drop version of the lp40n. Or for diect drive the lp5

    Basically agree. If I wanted a new table, for $500, the rt-85 is my choice. I know you must be aware, that some tables have removable arm wands, so you can switch carts. Not anywhere as easy as removable headshells. Upper end fluances, have 3 adjustable feet, which is a PLUS. Early 80 and 81's had irregular speed control. Speed would wander over a period of several seconds.

I have in my possession a vintage circa 1979 Rotel RC-2000 preamp(they call it a 'control amplifier'). This thing has a very fine phono section in it complete with adjustable capacitance and resistance.....and.....to finally get to my point....Moving Coil inputs. I would love to hear your thoughts on moving coil carts and would really appreciate maybe some reviews of affordable moving coil options. I could buy some moving coil carts "willy-nilly" and waste my hard earned cash hoping to get lucky, but I would much rather you spend yours and share with me your findings....Please tell me that you might have some reviews of this nature coming in future installments. As always, thanks for your great, entertaining content!

It's heavy!! Fantastically so. Santa says I have to wait until Christmas Day to sample the delight bah humbug. This is replacing a ProJect T1 that I've had for 2yrs and I'm glad to be giving it to my Son. It has been one of the most over-hyped decks I've owned. Removable headshells are a step backward! Rega put a tremendous amount of engineering ability into developing a one piece tonearm because it is more rigid and sounds better. Roy Gandy was told it could not be done. Removable headshells keeps you stuck in the 1970s. Get a turntable with a one-piece tonearm and one cartridge you like or can live with and stick with it.
