    Hi! I Love your channel because I would NEVER do that kind of camping on my own, but its all so fascinating to watch! I love Monty !! So look, I'm a chef and I've had to make tons of taco beef and coney island sauce over the years and I have a tip you might find useful to get your ground beef oil free and in the smallest bits ever!! So instead of "Browning" your beef, if you want you can put the ground beef in a pot like the one you have for the sauce, break up the raw ground beef in the pot, cover with cold water,and then SQUEEZE the ground beef with/ thru your fingers in the water until all big chunks are gone and what you have left looks like a ground beef "pudding". Put it on a med high heat and let come to a rolling boil then turn it down to low. Continually stir to make sure no chunks form while cooking. When all the meat is no longer pink, turn off pot-drain in strainer, rinse with cold water to break up any more chunks and rinse off any remaining oil. The result should be some extra fine crumbles and no oil!! It may sound like more work but it isn't really and it will give you what you are looking for. You can even do big batches of ground beef this way and put in Ziploc bags in the freezer for not only your spaghetti, but Chili, Nachos, Tacos, sloppy joes, coney sauce-anything you want to use fine, crumbled ground beef in! Enjoy!!

      Im a life long vegetarian and have been looking for dehydrated food for Moto camping. The first thing I noticed was the salt in all the pre made stuff also most of it is awful. Im going to have to try this And the dehydrator will actually get used for something other than trim. I love how he did so many things my girlfriend would yell at me for doing in the kitchen.

    • @AttemptMade

      Cardamom, it’s better for bp than bp meds and doesn’t give you side effects.

  • @Tintenklexs
    @Tintenklexs 4 года назад +19

    Tip for anyone who wants to repeat this: Dehydrators are one of the kitchen items that people look at after a few years of collecting dust in their kitchen and put on Craigslist/Ebay for pretty cheap. This will save you some buck and also help the environment.

    With that volume of add-ins, I’d suggest ditching the canned sauce. A couple of large cans of san marzano tomatoes (or really any canned tomatoes you have) crushed up with a tablespoon or two of olive oil and you’re golden. No extra effort beyond crushing, which can be done by hand in a few seconds. You’ll get a fresher-tasting sauce for the same effort. Unless, of course, you like the Hunts, then by all means...
    Thanks for the dehydration technique. I’ve never thought about taking spaghetti camping. I’ll add it to the menu, thanks to you.

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I’m making spaghetti sauce for dehydrating as I write. I’m going to serve it in about a month when family comes to visit. It will be a TEST, so I’ll let you know what they think. I drained the ground beef, but did NOT wash off the fat. My reasoning is that A: it’s very lean and B: I’ll be keeping it in the freezer until serving it. Fat takes a while to go rancid so I don’t think it will be a problem...and it adds flavor. I used an open bottle of Prego and added fresh tomatoes from my garden. It’s good and soupy!! Will dehydrate tomorrow after the sauce has mixed with the pasta. But not near my dog...as there would be nothing left to put in the dehydrator!! I’ll be back with the family’s critique next month!

    I very much enjoyed this episode. I have a dehydrator someone got me for Christmas about five years ago. It’s still in the box. I think I’ll break it out today. We are basically vegan, but I do have a good spaghetti recipe I can try this on. Also, your colander is the exact same one I grew up with. It took me back to the 60s and 70s. It didn’t even occur to me to dehydrate spaghetti. I wanted to dehydrate lemon peels to make a lemon flavoring since we don’t use pepper, and lemon pepper has pepper in it. But I like the lemon flavors. I’ve learned I can make many other kinds of seasonings with a dehydrator too. I guess I’d better start dehydrating. Thanx for making the vid!

    I've been giving this some thought because the prepackaged meals are quite expensive in the UK, and using your DIY method you get larger, fresher portions which are prepared and cooked to your personal preference.
    And it saves a ton of money!

He and his girls loved it and he said definitely Letting it sit overnight was key...and lots of sauce! However, a bear climbed a tree and got their packs, and he didn't not care for the spaghetti so luckily left it alone. He prefered the prepacked dehydrated food. I tapped on this after watching the first part of your Montana trip with Jake the Ski guy and I wondered what you were cooking and then you said you would do a video on how to make it and I went looking. Monty and Reugs sniffing around lol. Entertaining and never a time waster watching your videos. In fact it's like meditation with not to little, not too much but just the right amount of Budda belly giggles.

    Tip: use a potato masher to break up the beef while browning. Obviously metal would damage a good nonstick Teflon pan so use a plastic masher or uncoated pan.

    to help make the ground meat smaller, if you stir it with a bunch of water when it's raw, then cook it and stir frequently, you can more easily break it up into small pieces. add maybe 1/2 to 1 cup of water per pound of raw meat. the proteins will absorb a little water and swell up, making it easier to stir and breakup.
    also, if you let the meat cool in the fridge, in a pool of water, the fat should rise to the top and you can just skim it off, instead of losing all that beef flavor in the sink.
