I just got permanent retainers on both the top and bottom teeth, and I’m really happy with them. This was my second round with braces. The first time, I had braces for almost 3 years and got them off in 2017. Unfortunately, my dentist didn’t stress how important retainers were, so I didn’t take them seriously and stopped wearing them. My teeth started shifting, and I ended up with gaps. I got braces again in October 2022, and now, after 1 year and 7 months, I’m finally getting them off next week. This time, I’m super conscious about wearing my retainers. I got the permanent ones, but even if I had the plastic transparent retainers, there's no way I’d neglect wearing them. I’ll probably wear them for the rest of my life because I don’t want to mess up my teeth again! 😂

Both will do about the same job as keeping your teeth straight, but the permanent one is rated better bc it’s always on so it’s not on you to wear them at night etc. one thing to think about and ultimately what caused me to ask my ortho to remove the permanent one and give me a removable is because flossing those front 4 teeth with the permanent retainer is hard and annoying af. My gum health is great now that I asked them to remove it.
@@Solontire same I'm scared about the cleaning part . Maybe I'll be able to manage my bottom teeth but upper teeth no way ik i can't handle that n that's why I was wondering if i can get fixed retainer on bottom teeth and removable retainer for my upper teeth btw can you tell me about your experience with removable retainer as well n also can you eat everything with fixed retainers?
@@ankitamehra7751 In my experience that’s what I started with - a permanent bottom and a removable top (the one with the wire that goes in front of your front teeth). My experience with the bottom lower permanent one was overall fine in terms of normal lifestyle choices…. You can eat whatever you want there are no restrictions. I guess it could potentially break on something, but I think it’s unlikely. Like I said after a couple months I told my ortho to remove it because it was causing my gum health to decline and they did and gave me a clear bottom retainer. From that point on I just wear them both at night and each time I go to my dentist for my 6 month appointment I have them deep clean them both and they still look good and work well. I would recommend you talk to your ortho before they put anything in your mouth permanently. Express your concerns to them and ask their opinion about the permanent vs removable and see what they say. At the end of the day it’s your choice how you want to proceed with the retainers so make sure you’re the one making the decision after speaking with them. Either way it’ll turn out just fine for you - just depends on how much work you wanna spend keeping those teeth clean if you do go the permanent route.
Hope I'm not late. But they are really worth it. The pros is that you won't need to be worrying about removing them then forgetting and you are 100% certain that your teeth won't change. The cons is that it might feel uncomfortable at first, but you will get used it. I don't consider breaking a con, since in all retainer types if they break you need to fix or get new ones. Have permanent retainer since 2015, no regrets only broke them once and never again.
@@MoeE3999 Thank you so much for this 😭 one more question , does the doctor charges extra fees for permanent retainers??? Or not please reply if you can 💜

Is permanent retainer applied on lower tooth? My dentist has recommended to apply on upper tooth...what would be the cost for the permanent retainer for one lower/ upper tooth?
Hey! I’m from the uk and I’m getting permanent retainers on both my upper and lower rows of teeth soon. It’s costing me £315 per row, £630 total which probably equates to around $750 (:

….. at our practice we put fixed wires in upper arch all the time if needed as long as the lower teeth are out of occlusion, checked with articulating paper. Achievable over 90% of time. To say this can’t be done is lazy positioning. Also where is the primer before you put the bond on!!!!!
@2:34, I have that set up right now with the clear retainer on the bottom and the wire on the top, which have 2 “teeth” built into it, which have to be worn 24/7.. I have two spaces where I will get implants on my top row of teeth on each side. I’m going to see if I can get a bonded retainer instead of this clear plastic thing for the bottom, I can’t talk right and it’s very bothersome. I’ve tried wax and filing to smooth the edges and nothing is helping🥹 I can’t freely eat or drink anymore and have to plan that out too. At this point I would rather have my braces back 🥺
hi! i got my permanent retainers yesterday on the top and bottom. but i’ve noticed that since i have them, my molar teeth don’t touch properly. i also keep noticing the retainer in my mouth. is that normal? i thought i would barley notice the retainer but my tongue clearly hates them 😭. i still have my braces tho (i get them off tomorrow). could the braces be the reason why my molar teeth won’t touch? and will i eventually stop noticing my permanent retainers? oh and also my bottom teeth keep hitting my top retainer. is there something wrong with my permanent retainers?
Hi Angelina... that is the main reason we don't use permanent retainer on top since the contact of the lower teeth on it.... so there is nothing wrong but the longevity of the retainer it's not going to be long enough... meaning in a couple of months after your treatment it's done the top retainer it might fall... I would recommend a clear removable retainer on top or even the classic the acrylic retainer with the metal wire.... and which retainer is the one you keep noticing??? please let me know if that helps of if you have any more questions.... 😉 Thanks for watching and don't forget to like our video that helps a lot!! 🧡🦷
The same thing happened to me. I went back to my orthodontist the day after and the only thing they did is remove a bit of the thick bond they had put. It didn’t help but I live so far away from their office that I accepted it. Bad idea! Now, 10 months later: my entire jaw is weak and tired because of my mouth not closing properly and one of my bottom teeth broke a small part from the repeated impacts against the upper retainer. I am getting the upper one removed as soon as possible.
@@Jenny-zd4ge, they did the same to me. they removed a bit i think. it took me some time to get used to it but now everything is fine so far. i’m sorry you’re having problems with the retainers. didn’t even know they could cause that! then it’s the best to take it out yeah. have you ever got used to the retainers and did the problems just occur after the 10 months?? or have you never gotten used to them?

It's extremely rare that you might loose your teeth after braces... it has to be a lot of bad news going on in the case but don't worry about it sensitivity has something to do with your enamel and nerve meaning with some varnish at your dentist would probably fix that sensitivity! 😉 Thanks for watching and don't forget to like our video that helps a lot!! 🧡🦷
It’s like a premade form to get the placement perfect. With a cast of the teeth you’d measure up and fit the retainer wire and wax it to the model and then use the putty and secure the wire in this. Then all you have to do is place it in the patients mouth, align the putty model and bond the retainer. Some practices do this, it makes the actual patient experience easier, but takes more time and planning 😄

Either way it’ll turn out just fine for you - just depends on how much work you wanna spend keeping those teeth clean if you do go the permanent route.
which wire to use for retainer
Permanent retainers are worth it??? They're good right??? Please tell me I'm super scared for my teeth ahhhhhhh please
Or not please reply if you can 💜
I only have just a small gap above my two front teeth can I wear a permanent retainer or do I have to get braces because my teeth are straight it’s just a small gaps
Ok replying to your comment. Thanks for letting me know. How can I talk to someone to schedule a consultation for my mouth. Cannot do over the phone at the moment. Thanks!
Through our social media channels @mytoothtime Facebook or Instagram since you can't do it over the phone!
How many years you have to wear retainers? I had 4 extractions
As long as you don't want your teeth to shift... the longer you wear them the less chance to get your teeth shifted when you remove it... 😉 Thanks for watching and don't forget to like our video that helps a lot!! 🧡🦷
Hey I have a question I have the same retainers in the back of my bottom teeth but I had them since 2010 I still have them on now do you know if I have to take them off or I have to keep them on the rest of my life
Keep rest of life
Do we feel pain in retainers like braces?
Great question and not at all, since they are not moving your teeth just "retaining" the position of your teeth! 😉 Thanks for watching and don't forget to like our video that helps a lot!! 🧡🦷
Retainers hurt worse then braces do in my opinion.
can you help me? :( i haven’t worn my retainers in months and my small overbite is coming back :( i just started to wear my retainers the other day and i have an appt this saturday, do permanent retainers stay on regardless ? like you can never take them off no matter how much you wear them?
Yea permanent retainers last over 20 years and they use a glue to bond it to ur teeth
I think I’ll get the Hawley retainer since it’s harder to lose it. Will my dentist let me choose that? (PD: I love your braces content!🥰)
Thank you Pedro!! and I believe your dentist can make that happen..... let's hope so! 😉 Thanks for watching and don't forget to like our video that helps a lot!! 🧡🦷
Literally just lost my bottom Hawley retainer
Why do they need a permanent retainer? What is it for?
To keep your teeth straight
Hi! Do the retainers would be forever?
Well....now you may know
@@anamikabeniwal7911 i dont know why but the dentist is saying that you have to wear for 1 year only and then there is no need. What should i do? I also got 4 teeth removed during braces 2 years ago
@@nilaypatel8008 I got permanent retainers too......and my dentist told me that I have to have them for 2 years only ....then I asked my brother (he is a dentist too) he told me I can't remove my retainers even after 2 year as there would always be a chance for my teeth to come back in original position 😢
….. at our practice we put fixed wires in upper arch all the time if needed as long as the lower teeth are out of occlusion, checked with articulating paper.

@@angelina-dh3re I got used to them by changing the way I closed my mouth (without realizing it). It went well at first but then I started getting more and more jaw tiredness and these days I noticed it a lot! I thought upper teeth fixed were compulsory but I’m watching all these videos and doctors’ advice and it seems like it’s normal to not have it? Now I’m relieved tbh. Thanks for sharing your experience by the way, now I know I wasn’t alone!
Ye same thing it s because your ortho doesn’t know how to put glue properly so it feels uncomfortable i recommend you to tell him about it and to tell him to put it only in 4 teeth and get a removable one and wear it every night 👍
Hiii plsss reply me do u have only one retainer u r fix
Hi my friend and permanent retainer on the lower jaw and clear retainers upper and lower! 😉 Thanks for watching and don't forget to like our video that helps a lot!! 🧡🦷
yo, I have my permanent retainer now for 1 year and I don’t know what should I do. I brush my teeth 3x a day but at the back of my teeth there are dental plaque between my teeth.
Hi my friend! and that's totally normal with that retainer! when was the last time you got a dental cleaning? that would be first then do your best with a waterpik the special dental floss and mouthwash in that area! Is this anyway similar to the dental wire splint and also performed by your dentist vs needing to see an Orthodontist?
Is it possible to get a bonded retainer put on the top teeth to replace the regular retainers
They said it's not done because it will chip lower teeth.
Hello! Ya terminé con mis braces pero no soporto los retenedores clear, no se que hacer!
I have to admit I haven't been taking the best of care of my theeth now on the bottom permanent retainer theeth there is some brownish stains does that mean decay
Not necessarily. You'd have to go to the dentist
No, it’s most likely just the glue that’s stained. Mine is the same way after 6 years, and my dentist said it’s just the glue
2:35 the whole reason I’m getting a permanent retainer is to not have to take it out or put it on 🤦♂️
Exactly!! and to avoid your teeth to shift... Thanks for watching! Don’t forget to give us a like and subscribe to our channel! That would help us a lot! 🦷🧡
The funny thing is i got my braces off on my thirteenth birthday I thought i was out the waters but i found out i got 2 permanent retainers top front then bottom front added on with a normal retainer😢 i have to wear at night
Can my teeth fall out after braces? 🥺 because I have really really sensitive teeth and I'm scaring that it'll fall out after getting braces, does this can happen? Love your videos by the way.
I'm a newbie assistant. What was the purple part used to hold the retainer? I was shown to do that with dental floss. This looks so much easier ..
Hi Gto Jay and for the one with floss for sure it's a little bit more complicated... we pre-made this retainer , took an impression prior getting the braces off and that's it! for sure as I said it's easier this way! 😉 Thanks for watching and don't forget to like our video that helps a lot!! 🧡🦷
