I always touch my heart whenever I hear Shrek's daughter say "Thank you, Daddy" when he returns her doll to her.

I love this movie this movie is so underrated out of the whole franchise ever since the third movie people just gave up this movie deserves a bit more praise because it has a good story
Most people I see tend to appreciate this movie quite a bit
You're completely right that there's less laughs but the film is still great.
I like how they amped up the stakes by putting Shrek in the world where he was never born.
Also glad you mentioned how good Rumpelstiltskin's voice is, as he's voice by Walt Dohrn a director and animator who was originally just head of story, but then he did some temporary recording tracks for the character (and some others), but in the end his Rumpelstiltskin stuck so he became the voice actor for the character. He also worked on the second and third film, so it was cool that he got a starring role in forever after.
I think the voice of rumple was just a place holder but her did such a great got they kept it as him

Shrek finally learns to appreciate his family and friends
Yeah, most of us just pretend Shrek The Third was a fever dream that didn't really happen, but the fourth movie was actually pretty good.
Mike Myers somewhat recently said he would like to make Shrek films an annual release, nothing has come of it yet, but who knows.
Still holding out for a 'Gladiator' reaction π.

Rumplestilskin's original story:
A miller lies about his daughter can spin straw into gold. The king calls for the girl and gives her lots of straw, if she spins all of them into gold by morning then he marries her, if not then she gets killed. An imp comes out to help her, but in exchange of her first born baby.
The king keeps his promise and marries her. The imp returns for the baby, the girl offers him all of her wealth to keep the baby but the imp is not interested in riches. Then he agrees he will leave the baby alone if she guesses his name within 3 days.
Before the final night she goes into the woods and finds the imp's home, the imp does not notice her and she hears him singing "tonight tonight, my plans i make , tomorrow tomorrow, the baby i make. The queen will never win the game, for Rumplestilskin is my name."
The imp returns on the 3rd day and the girl reveals his name and he loses his temper.

I think this was a good way to cap the Shrek movies, like you said definitely not as funny as the others but with a good, and very realistic, message. π
Not as amazing as 1 or 2 but it's way much better than Shrek the Third
Idk, I enjoyed it just as much as I did the first the second.
