Another tip on someone paying you for a commission: If they plan on paying you more than the prices you have, a real buyer would not tell you they're doing that. They would pay what's stated and give a tip after its finished. Kind people exist, but they need to trust their commission is made before throwing extra cash at you.
With that being said, please tip your artist. Especially if you feel they're under pricing themselves.

I’ve gotten this three times now! The M.O.: “can you draw something for my kids”, spells the word “check” oddly (as in bank check), and “I can’t pay through third party payment sites”. Don’t be fooled, always require at least half of the cost upfront, and stick to your guns! Artists don’t starve! 💪

Really wish I'd seen people talking about this scam before I fell for it. This scammer asked me to draw a portrait of her son (who looked no older than 10), despite the fact that I mostly draw adult women and regularly include mature themes in my art. Not sure why she thought my edgy wlw art was a good match for her. I even brought up the fact that I don't make art for kids, but she just insisted that my art is so good (I do agree that my art is very good, but I would've preferred to hear that from an honest person). I was even more concerned because she said her son loves my art, which makes me wonder why you would be okay with letting your young child look at that kind of stuff. I really wanted to turn the commission down on that basis alone, but I felt like it would be mean. After all, only a heartless artist would say no to a loving mother who just wants a portrait of her precious child(/s). As someone who honestly dislikes children, I don't think it's my place to tell others how to raise their kids, so I didn't feel like my doubts were a good enough reason to turn her down. Since I hadn't heard of this scam before, I didn't know what to suspect her of. I was also stuck in this mindset of "the customer is always right," so that didn't help. Good to know I should've been meaner. It was actually kind of a relief once I realized I'd been scammed because then I could finally tell that wench to buzz off (I did that as professionally as possible, though. She still had the gall to call me rude. As if it's not rude to scam people lmao).
Also, I should mention that the profile looked more legit than most scammers. It was public and had a decent amount of posts, all photos of herself and her child. The references she gave me weren't there, but the faces matched. I also tracked down her Facebook and it had a lot of the photos that were on the Instagram. Interestingly, I also found her name in a relatively recent court case - I haven't been able to find the documents for free, so I don't know what was going on there. The defendant could just be someone else with the same unusual name as her. However, I wouldn't be surprised if she's had trouble with the law before.
So yeah, that's a long summary of my experience. I'm glad this issue is getting more attention, but it sucks that this is even happening in the first place.

For me here are my red flags
My commission prices are extremely low, never going up past 50 dollars
If they suddenly say they want to pay 200 for no reason and they are ADAMANT about that 200 mark. For some reason 200 is there magic number it’s always 200 dollars
That and it’s typically a commission about a non antho animal commission, which is a red flag to me because I don’t advertise such type of commission, I do furry, human like furry, etc, but never like animals. That and they typically spam like but never follow, if they reach out to you immediately after liking your stuff, take caution..
Also, if they are insistent on getting your full legal name run

Similar thing with me. I do my commissions through Etsy and in social media I always advertise as doing them exclusively there and yet sometimes I get messages asking me if I'm available (which is often already a giveaway of a scammer in my case) to which I repeat that I only do commissions through Etsy and redirect them there. They most often stop replying from then on, but there was one case of someone trying to push through and when they realized they weren't going to get it their way they asked me how Etsy worked (probably to see if they could pull their scam through there) and to confirm whether or not I had a Paypal account. Once I explained and confirmed that I do not deal nor have PayPal they ghosted me.

I had a got scammed the very beginning of this year, $200 dollars is what I lost. Unfortunately I didn’t know that PayPal scams existed at the time (and it doesn’t make it any better that I didn’t know how PayPal worked). I was so excited to get my first commission that was so high that I overlooked all the red flags that should’ve told me it was to good to be true. I ended up figuring out that they scammed me at the very end of me sending them $200 back because “in order to except that high of that amount on PayPal I had to upgrade to a business account”. I never did get money back but I now know to watch out for scammers and be more aware. There are lots of bad people out there so please be careful 💕

Immediately they responded asking me to draw their son's pet for $200. This is obviously a red flag, so I checked the account. And this is why on my commission form I specifically have it that I only accept payment AFTER the work is done. The client will receive watermarked/slightly-but-enough lower quality versions of the work for proof checking until payment is received. My watermark is basically a massive transparent outline of my logo that CANNOT be removed easily, especially on more detailed work.

and yes they also just offered 50 dollars before I said anything about prices or they even told me what style they were after

I said no in the kindest way possible(because of the reasons stated above) and that she should go ask an artist, who DO take commissions!
A few days later, she just randomly sent me two pictures of her son’s dog, since that’s what she wanted me to draw, both DESPITE not having told me beforehand AND AFTER I said no!
Another few days later, she just asked “Are you done?” which really confused me at first, but then when she mentioned drawings and that she’d pay me 200$ for them, I knew what was up, turned her down again and deleted the chat.
At around the same time, a guy in my DMs ALSO showed up and asked for a commission of his(you guessed it)son’s dog…

I am a caricature artist and got an email like this, someone wanted their kid drawn and I think offered me $300. I emailed them once initially but I thought their language was pretty fishy and stopped there. A month later one of my colleagues texted me asking what I thought about a request he was getting. The exact same email with different names, my colleague is older and I am pretty happy that his warning bells went off when it did. He had a lot more back-and-forth emails with them. Our commissions can make it to $300 or more depending on what they want (its generally less though) so the alarm bells didn't immediately go off for either of us. I thought it was a really strange thing to specifically target caricature artists. I have heard of the over payment scam before so I think that helped me see things quickly.

An often giveaway that it's one of these scammers is their grammar surrounding the word "commission". A normal person would either use it in the plural or with an article, so like "are you available for commissions" or "are you available for a commission", but they pretty much always (in my experience at least) say it in the singular without an article, something like "are you available for commission".

  • @planetshanchanart

I have encountered this multiple times! There are two things in my conversations with the scammers that I wanted to point out to others! One was that they got tripped up when I mentioned Cinco de Mayo being a holiday and said define please. this struck me as someone not familiar with US holidays but also as someone who possibly did not speak English as their first language! Two, they completely ignored me when I said things like this is how much I usually charge or please apply for the commission through my website form. They seemed very eager to quickly send the photograph of the subject that they were wanting commissioned! So eager in fact, in the last time occurrence that they were upset that I said I wasn’t available to start the commission until the first of the next month because I was currently working on other projects! I’ve also noticed that a lot of people who have been targeted by the scam on Instagram have said that they were targeted right before the weekend! I wonder if that is because of banks being closed on the weekend and it taking a while to verify the check!? I’ve also been thinking recently that there is another victim in these schemes because the accounts that they create sometimes have photographs to make the account seem less like a burner account! There is also a subject in the photos that they’re sending as reference for the commission! Who are these people? Who are these pets? What accounts are they stealing these pictures from?! Are the people in these photos aware that their photos are being used for the scam?! Isn’t that a form of identity theft!?

They got back saying they can only pay by cheque at which point I turned them down. Recently I've noticed more comments on posts asking about commissions. The messages are usually quite general and would fit any artist. I haven't done many commissions before so it's not something I'm very confident with yet. If someone asks for a price up front just tell them to go to your commission form or copy and paste your prices from a separate note or doc. Also, ask for payment upfront and say no refunds to reduce strain unless if you cannot fulfill the request.

If I can't get my rescue dogs (who adopted my wife and me) painted, thanks to these scuzzball scammers - these scammers get to go to lunch, the hard way! (A new format of Japanese-inspired artistry, perhaps - "mangle manga"?)

Something about the tone or "voice" of those scammer messages reminds me somehow of the ones who try and get fetish stuff from artists/writers. I had one dude message me three separate times on three different platforms, with several years between each (so I don't think he realized he'd already tried me before), trying to get me to write a fic involving Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy putting his self-insert OC in a diaper to "punish" him. Thing is, first two times I was only doing SFW Doctor Who gen fic, had never even seen a Marvel movie, so that red flag pinged straight away when he was all, "hey, I really love your work, I think you'd be perfect to write something for me, so I really want something about Gamora..."
Third time, he was dripfeeding the details, so it took a few messages to realize it was that same dude, and I did have one Marvel fic to my name by then - a gen Loki whump oneshot. When he got to the diaper thing, I said "can I interest you in a Tony Stark/Adrian Toomes mechanophilia story instead?" and he blocked me.

Similarly, I believe there is also a bit of a reverse version of this scam in which people claiming to be artists message non-artists and ask, and I'm quoting the one my friend got sent, "If you don't mind one of your posts could be my inspiring muse for an art project i'm working on? You will totally get paid for it as well as a bonus also get credits reward"
Which is just. I don't even know where to start. It's really obviously sketch, but, like, my friend who is very much not an artist didn't know why it was sketch and just sent it to me because he thought it was funny/weird they found his meme posts inspiring. Pretty much everyone I showed the screenshots to agreed with me in saying it was fishy and likely a scam of some kind.

For context, I'm like 1-2 week new to instagram and i've only uploaded like 6 drawings and they're just like anime fan arts and my oc's portraits. I have 15 followers now and JUST YESTERDAY i got a dm of a lady saying that she fell in love with my art... i mean, as a beginner it just felt nice and i thanked her. THEN she actually asked me if i do commissions and stuff cause i don't have any prices on my page and she wanted me to draw a character so i thought about it and i was like yeah sure what's your drawing about and she sent me just 2 photos of the (i think) same dog... just like that. no context at all. AND OFFERING $200 dlls!!! thats like $4000 mexican pesos ???!!! I thought that maybe she just wanted her dog's picture BUT I DON'T DRAW ANIMALS, LIKE AT ALL, they're not even on my page... I tell her that and i offered just send them some sketches first and then we can talk about details and payment in advance before sending the final piece and she just told me that it was ok. My intuition said something was off but maaaaan i needed the money. I guess i'm just declining the offer the politest way i can and block her account. The account is private, she doesn't even follow my page just liked one Eren fan art i uploaded a couple days ago.

I feel like such an idiot for almost/practically falling for drawing spiderman for "their sons birthday" I got super sketched out when they were adamant about paying with a check "out of their sons savings account" and I held that drawing hostage until I realized they were not going to pay me after they started ignoring my messages about when they would send me the payment via paypal. it sucked because it was my first "commission" and their account looked legit with pictures of a mom and their son (which matched the pictures they sent me of said "son" as spiderman) though I finished the artwork, they never received it so I guess it's a win on my part. but now I have a spiderman drawing that I spent way longer than I normally would have on because I was excited about my first commission. long story short don't do what I did. also ask for at least half payment upfront

its not the exact same situation, but this is similar to something I had happen on eBay. I was selling a figurine that was accepting offers, and I got an offer for more than double the first price. I thought wow, awesome, I'll take this offer. The buyer and I emailed back and forth, him saying he was buying it for his cousin's birthday (which is weirdly specific, and mentioned multiple times), and kept asking for my PayPal to send the money. I said no, I would only take payment through eBay (which is what ebay says you must do anyways) but he kept insisting on sending it through PayPal only. Luckily I denied it, because I looked it up later and it is indeed a scam. They offer a high price for an item that you will accept, then insist on paying through PayPal, and then send you a fake payment notice to your email. Then you'll send the item without actually being paid.

They said they wanted 15 portraits of themselves done, and ignored me when I said I was only comfortable with accepting one order at a time. I blocked them when I had to repeat myself regarding my discomfort accepting such a large order from a first-time client, and they ignored me again wanting to pay the full amount upfront for the 15 pieces I had said twice that I wasn't comfortable doing.

I had one offer the $200 but they offered upfront a PayPal transaction. I didn’t message them further but that was odd to me.
Also I got two requests like this at the very same time. One sent me a dm, one commented on my post to dm them if I was accepting commissions.
The one who commented didn’t follow me. She had posts from 2017, did seem legitimate even with recent posting but she still had the scammer behavior. She offered PayPal and $200 to draw her dog. I don’t know if they would have changed their preferred method of payment from PayPal to something else but I think these scammers are learning.
The one in my dm followed me but asked for his son’s pet. I didn’t even bother with that one.

They wanted me to paint their pet, when they didn’t wanna send a picture and when I said I couldn’t draw pets then asked for a painting of a cartoon character for their little sister. Red flag, if the painting is for them but then they switch it up like that it’s a scam. Then the person wanted the biggest canvas I had which. I just reported and blocked them after that. Hello! May I suggest I possible topic around art for future videos? (I actually just learnt about it and found it an intersting question). I have heard of the critiques Samdoesart recieved because he drew an actress not resembling the real person but with the same face of all his female subjects, which he stated to be a choice because he finds that face the most attractive (but I think he was joking in that answer). On the contrary, he has always drawn men with very different and individually characterised faces. (Btw by now Sam fixed the drawing and discussed the same-face-syndorme question and expressed the intention to increase diverse features). I think that this event might be a nice starting point to discuss the representation of women through the whole art history mainly by male artists, the depersonalisation and idealisation of women as objects of desire in male art (not necessarily what Sam wanted to do, but I think that this topic can be linked in a discussion around it), the pressure of beauty standards that art can support or disrupt, the similar tendency on instagram (with filters and aesthetic surgery) to have the same idealised face and body types in order to gain popularity especially for women. I find all of this a very intersting topic, and I hope you do too;) (but no pressure if you don't, it's just a suggestion. If not this, I bet that you will bring up a lot of other interesting topics in your videos, as you always do). Bye!
