After having many questions on what I put in the Fluval Flex filter chamber I decided to show you guys and girls.
Hope you this video useful.

I’ve had a Fluval Flex 15 sitting in my basement for couple of years waiting for me to finish setting up my larger tanks. I finally got to setting the Flex, and was happy to see I’m not the only one to upgrade to an Eheim pump and heater. Thanks for this video. 😊
A friend of mine just gave me their fluval flex along with their fishes, shrimp and snails. Saw your tank cleaning video and cleaned my tank up the same way you did. I was nervous to do it but the tank is so much cleaner now and everyone survived. Just wanted to say thank you for posting these videos up. I’m new to the hobby and I’ve learned a lot by watching your videos. 🙏🏽
Really nice message, thankyou so much, glad you enjoyed my videos.
Great idea putting bio medium in that 1st chamber. Wonderful way to seed it also for any future aquariums you might set up
Thanks for the video.
Very informative and no mucking about just straight to the point..... And a cracking Northern accent 👌👌 cheers.
Thanks Richard, really appreciate the kind words and support😊👍
The only video explaining where to point the nozzles. Thank you!!
Glad you found it useful thankyou.
Just replaced my Fluval Flex pump with the Eheim 300 pump …..Not only is the tank much quieter but the water clarity is much better too. Glad I watched your video….Kind Regards..Les
Great stuff and thankyou so much for watching.
Lovely little pro tip, also good idea to answer common questions with a video
Thanks so much Jurijs. Really enjoy making these videos. What do you think of the new Flex scape? Felt pressure with this one because of the amazing feedback and critique from yourself.
Mark G no pressure Mark, simply enjoy doing what you do 😉
@@JurijsJutjajevs thanks Jurijs...I'm absolutely loving it, everything about this hobby and making video for RUclips👍
That sponge in the intake is BRILLIANT. I would NEVER have thought of that. Super simple and smart. As well is the sponge under the pump.
Thankyou Alyssa, glad you found this video useful. Thanks for taking the time to comment🙏
This is really informative, thanks! great to see what you have done as your tank always looks so clean and crystal clear water. I'm 3 weeks into my flex set up and everything is great apart from a diatom bloom, argh! Hoping it will end soon, just trying to change the water as often as I can. Great tip for the vents I will definetly do that, I immediately upgraded the pump to the eheim as I heard how bad/noisy the fluval one was and the adjustable power on the eheim is quite useful.
Thankyou very much. Wouldn't worry about Diatoms, you could add, if you haven't done so already, shrimp, Otos and nerite snails. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Does the eheim pump come with tubing , nozzle etc?
Just replaced my pump on the Fluval flex, with Eheim 300……so well pleased I listened to your advice ! Not only is the pump quieter the water is clearer too…Kind Regards Les
That's great glad you're happy with it👍
Is it quite? And what's size tank is your flex
@@Twisted-84 …extremely quiet…15 gal
Is the 300 best for a planted 15 gallon fluval flex?
@@Twisted-84 it is for me as I keep a Siamese fighter and shrimps… I have it on the lowest setting.. so easy to clean too… the plants are … anubias , Xmas moss, Java fern…I use co2 for the plants
I have this same Fluval Flex 15 gallon. I see many references to the stock pump being noisy. My experience is different. I've found the provided pump to be extremely quiet, and I can't hear anything at all unless I put my ear right up near it.
Hey Greg, that's great, no need to upgrade or change👍
Excellent video! I have bought the Eheim gear today! 👌May I ask you the dimensions of the sponge under the pump? Likewise the intake strainer please? Obvious question, I take it that you had to cut the Fluval hose? I have to agree I love my Fluval Flex, your set up is SO good I'm mirroring it! Thanks again for the video 👍
Hi there, so glad you enjoyed this video and always nice to inspire someone. Afraid I can't answer your questions as I genuinely can't remember. I did this 4 years ago and done 100's of various setups since.
@@GEORDIESCAPERThanks for the info - I'm looking forwards to this upgrade!
Howay! Great suggestions. Will try the Eheim pump over my noisy & failing stock pump. Can you use the stock filter outlet though - as I don't want too much flow for my Betta?
You can yes, if I remember rightly flow can be controlled from the actual pump.
I’ve had my flex for about 5 months. I’ve removed the grills from both intakes. I find my shrimp like to migrate In and out without issue for anyone wondering. Without grills and foam I can keep my skimmer in this section and run it 24/7. Crystal clear water.
Sometimes less is more and i'll probaly start doing that. Thanks for sharing Louise👍

@@DamienMagician my pleasure.
If I have a 57 liter Fluval Flex for mixed but compatible fish, what pump do you recommend I buy from Eheim? the 600 you mention in your video?
Question! Im trying to decide if I NEED to buy new pump. Currently have the stock pump and am currently in a bacterial bloom. Can’t figure out why. I’ve noticed the chambers went from full to 3” below top. Norm was about 1”. If I turn the pump off it goes back to the OG level. I noticed in your video the levels aren’t that high. Do you think the pump levels on mine could be pump not running well aka cause of bloom?
*I’ve done all the norm check for decomposing things. Etc. may have been over feeding by coworkers but we’re going on 2 weeks no change.
Hey Gillian, everything you say is perfectly normal. The chambers designed in a way so the water level drops, not 100% sure why but there's a Fluval video explaining in detail. Bacterial blooms are perfectly normal, beneficial bacteria clog together in the water column giving the water a milky appearance sometimes lasts days, sometimes weeks. The water if not already will be crystal clear in no time.
....one thing I would recommend is a water change once per week around 40%-50%.
What other kind of other things you use in the flite
If I was doing this now I would fill it with a bags of Seachem Matrix
Yo, thanks from Canada. I may try this pump out.
I'm hoping my stock pump quiets a bit over time, but I'm not holding my breath. To be honest, I'm a bit disappointed about the hum of the pump being noisier than anticipated.
Sounds almost like a small freezer while it's cycling in the corner.
Other than that, I love the tanks esthetics and room for modifications.
Cheers, brother.
Hey there and thanks for taking the time to comment. The Eheim pump is good quality but mine is still humming (annoying as hell) the lid seems to vibrate aswell, moving it out of my bedroom into a gallery/studio i'm working on....again thanks for the message👍
@@GEORDIESCAPER Thanks for the headsup. I'll do some research into quiet pumps. I appreciate the video and info!
no probs...hope you get sorted👍
@@GEORDIESCAPER Hey Geordie. It's been a few weeks with the Fluval stock pump on. Happy to say the pump did actually quiet down after a couple weeks of cycling. Just wanted to update my comment. Thanks again!
the pre filter doesn't really help tho on the top because waters not passing thru it. I'd assume the bottom one has that tho?
Yeah bottom one has that too,, used the sponge to keep shrimp from getting into the filter chamber.
@@GEORDIESCAPER Oh true OK lol
Hi
I have the Fluval flex 57l and just replaced the filter with the eheim 600 you suggested. I’m still finding that there is some vibration noise and seems worse with the lid on. Should I have the filter adjusted down to lowest setting ? Will that make it quieter ? Is there anything else I can do to make it quieter ? I have all the power leads coming into to gap in the middle of the lid, is this correct ?
Hi there, It's been a long while since I had this flex. You could try standing the pump on a sponge. Yeah, it's the best place to have leads coming out. Again, try a bit sponge wedged between any leads, etc, and tank see if this helps. I was lucky and had very little vibration noise.
What's the filter you are using as a pre-filter??
You were right on about the filter upgrade. It was like a tsunami at full force. Huge difference. Thank you
Glad the video was of some help to you. Appreciate you taking the time to comment.
Hi, thanx for the Eheim tip! I don’t find the Fluval pump noisy, but it does have a tendency to vibrate, because it often touches the sides of the tank, really irritating. Moreover, I have very tiny fish (Flex 34 litres) and they can't handle the heavy flow. Unfortunately you can't regulate the flow like you mentioned🤔. So glad I saw this video 👍. I'll buy this Eheim pump straight away! Thanks!
Greetings from Holland 🐠
What is the size of the hole where the return nozzle fits in?
Sorry, I can't help you there. I haven't had the Flex for around 3 years now.

Great tips 👍 would you still upgrade the pump to the 300, 600 or 1000 on the 57 even if keeping guppies?
Thankyou. I would still use the 1000 because the flow can be controlled👍

@@GEORDIESCAPER :)) without a chance at aquarium in the bedroom ..Im light sleeper...but I already ordered the Eheim Compact Pump 1000*..thank you ..
@@MrJurajk24 think you'll be impressed with the Eheim pump👍
Definitely some useful information here, but I have a question. I am also concerned about small fish or shrimp getting into the filtration...you used some sponge that was cut to fit behind a removable piece. The sponge seems easy enough to get ahold of, but does that removable piece actually come with the tank, or is it something extra I should buy and if so, where should I look? I assume there's one at the bottom as well? Could you also possibly recommend a similar pump that I can easily get my hands on in the US, if you know of any? I searched for the one you recommended but it seems as though I may need a special adapter in order to plug it in, and if I should need parts, etc, in a hurry this may present a problem, although I will obviously keep the pump that comes with it. I'm relatively new to this and am planning on setting this up with several live plants as well as a small school/community with a single "statement" fish. I sadly already have a few parts I don't think will work very well with this tank because of the setup, such as a bubble wall and an LED airstone. Regardless, I'm super excited to get this going in the most optimal setup as early on as possible so I don't have to take things apart a week into setting it up. I appreciate any help you can give me!
Hi Chris,
As I understand it, you never used to get the clip on inlet grills but you do now and I did with mine. I wouldn't worry to much about the pump the one you get with it is fine, parts etc will be easier for you to get hold of. Now my Eheim pump has been on for a while the noise difference is minimal. There's two inlets top and bottom👍Hope this helps and good luck with your setup.
Would the Eheim 1000 be too much for a fully planted flex 15 or should just get the 600 like you did? Thanks!
600 is fine in my opinion👍
where do you get the pre filter grill
It came with it, but I think you can get them on eBay.
Hi Mark, if you had the mega flex 123l,would you keep both filter Chambers exactly the same as your small flex, also what size eheim pump would you use, thanks mate. 💚👍
I'll be honest haven'g had the flex for a long while now. I would probably fill the chamber with nets of biomedia such as Seachem Matrix to hold as much beneficial bacteria as possible, I think a pump rated at around 1500 lph and flow controlled would be your best option👍
What do you put in sizes the fater
I'll be honest,,ages since I had this and not 100% sure.. Media was ×1 sponge and a net full of Seachem Matrix. I think the pump was an Eheim 1000lph
Hi does the inlet guards that hold the sponge come in the box thanks
Yeah they do now👍
GEORDIE SCAPER thanks 👍
Mark,I asked this question on the Fb Flex group but nobody has answered as yet so would value your opinion, It's actually reguards a Flex 123, so if I wanted to put CO2 in the tank to aid planting, would it be practical/possible to cut in an IN-Line diffuser into the short delivery hose, or is it to short?
Also Mark, regard upgrading the pump on the flex 123 would there be a benefit using the Eheim 1000 tuned down of on full output ?,
Hi Ed, I wouldn't like to say for sure regarding the CO2 as I've never used inline (I would only consider using inline for larger tanks, 200 litres and above) I would defintely use the Eheim Compact 1000 and at full flow...sorry I couldn't be of more help regarding the CO2.
@@GEORDIESCAPER Thanks for the swift reply Mark,Channel is first class, extremely helpful, informative and interesting, Please keep up the great work.

Hi. With either the pump provided or the one you have upgraded to, how do you remove the hose to clean it? The clip around mine securing it is so tight. I also see you have a clip on yours. Thank you in advance for any advice.
You could leave it attached to the pump and use a pipe cleaning brush. That's usually the easiest way.

@@GEORDIESCAPER Thank you! I have the smaller fluval flex aquarium, 34l. If I was to replace the pump with a eheim one would i need the model below?
I'll be switching my tank to a planted aquarium with soil substrate tomorrow. Any tips on maintaining the CO2 levels so the plants will thrive but also the oxygen levels for the fish?
Sorry for all the questions, still very new to fish keeping :)
You could still use the Eheim compact 600 because the flow can be adjusted unlike the stock one. Always best to have more filtration in my opinion.
With CO2 injection i would use a drop checker which will give you a visual on the CO2 levels of yourtank. If you google CO2 drop checkers there'a some great info out there.
Hi, the hose on the original pump is so tight. How do you remove it to fit into the Eheim?
Hi Mark, what pump and heater would you use on the 34l flex mate, 👍
Any good quality pump rated around 500lph, heaters I would go for the Oase ones, great quality 50w power should do it.
Thanks for such a useful video. It is interesting for all Hagen Fluval Flex owners.
Liked your decision about how to avoid vibration from the pump working. Now, I really think to change that noisy standart pump on the Eheim.
The only thing I didn't understand clearly is what you use in the first chamber in that sack?
Hi there and thanks for taking the time to comment, glad you enjoyed and got something from the video. The first chamber I generally use nothing. I throw in bags of filter media (Seachem Matrix) to help speed up cycling in other tanks. Hope this makes sense.
Many thanks
Mark

Thanks for the message appreciate it.
hello Geordie, the pump Eheim 600 is silence ? ( can you measure the decibels with app. sound meter? ..) because I ordered Eheim 1000 and had to return because it was tragedy, more noisy than original ..thank you very much ..
Hi there, I can only go on my experience with this pump as I am not affiliated with Eheim or Fluval in any way. I find it quiter as do many in forums etc (that's why I changed to the Eheim after reading good reports from other Flex owners) maybe it's worth getting in touch with one or both of the companies to express your concerns with the noise. I find if I hear any vibration it's coming from the cables touching the lid. Hope you get sorted.
Best regards
GS.
Great video, just bought myself one for a first time tank and this video has been very informative, I was quite surprised with how loud it was when I got it setup!
Thankyou Dan, glad you enjoyed the video. yeah that seems to be the biggest issue with the Flex, the noise and vibration. Best of luck with your setup👍
I have the same tank. I dont like the look of the look off bubbles and tubing in the tank with an air stone. I can just put the stone and tubing in the empty chamber in the filter box, right? That shouldnt hurt the gas exchange by going through the filter would it? Or should I put on the other side of the filter in the pump chamber?
Hi David, personally I don't think an airstone is needed. You can get the gas exchange needed by simply pointing one of the outlet nozzles or both to agitate the surface which gives the gas exchange to produce more oxygen. It's not the bubbles from the airstone that produces the oxygen it's the bubbles breaking the water surface. Hope this helps.

Hi. Question about upper intake. Does water level has to be under the intake. Mine is somewhere on the middle
I think middle is ideal as it asks a skimmer too.
What pump came with the tank? Do u think necessary to replace with a better one eg: eheim 600?

Great vids! On the bottom intake do you need to
keep rocks and plants away and leave a space around it? If so how much?
Do you put some foam across the bottom intake to keep livestock out?

ra ra. I have the fluval flex and the fluval spec v. There are no grills for the spec. In my spec I use a rectangular washing up sponge (the ones with a thin scourer on top) behind the intake grill. It just sits on top of the black sponge and fits perfectly , it stops any debris getting in there and also stops my longfinned bettas tail being sucked in when he rests there. Hope this helps, I've been running mine like this for 5 years and no problems.
@@denisepollitt1021 awesome hint! Thank you very much!!
What is that (blue ) filter behind the filter intake screen?
I used to keep small shrimp in there so I cut some filter sponge to put behind the grills.
GEORDIE SCAPER any filter sponge?
@@coolwater411 mine was medium type sponge, i find fine sponge clogs to quick.
GEORDIE SCAPER I have coarse filter sponges will that work?
Yeah should work fine👍
What stand is that?
Just some cheap thing I had, wouldn't recommend it.
That intro was relaxing and tbh got sad when it ended…
Glad you enjoyed it until the end🙈
Tune please :)
I have got a air pump running in my flex and I think it’s unsightly, Has anyone else got a pump is running in their flu for flex and is it worth it having one with this thank having the water flow outlets thank you
I wouldn't bother with the air pumps. Break the water surface with one of the outlet nozzles to help produce oxygen.
Nice tip on prefilter
Thankyou, glad you found it useful.

english for germans????
I do my best but I have a strong Northern UK accent (Newcastle area known as Geordies, hence the name) I'll add subtitles but sometimes they don't pick up my accent. I'll aim to be more clear as I do appreciate it must be difficult for some. I have much better microphones now which help with the clarity.
Super ! orgered that pump . chers !
