    This station has been abandoned since 1924. Frieght train from ny and atlantic rr use it to shuttle cars to the ny and cross harbor barges to bring cars to nj

    Love this video! Some of those abandoned tracks you're walking on, could potentially become the new Interborough Express line, using existing tracks that are unused&abandoned from Jackson Heights to Bay Ridge. The MTA is currently doing studies on these rails&if this line becomes a reality, this video would end up becoming what some of the line could've looked like at one point before the Interborough Express existed. Have you also checked out the abandoned Rockaway beach branch in Queens? If not, you should definitely check it out.

    You guys inspired me to do this exact walk today - except I started about 4 miles earlier, entering from ridgewood (you started closer to east new york). 13 miles of beautiful tracks, met some nice people, and couldn't have done it without this vid. Thank you! You can also try taking the same tracks the opposite direction (go north initially), and either turn right at the NY & Atlantic railway headquarters towards forest park (watch for workers), or turn left and take it all the way to L.I.C.

As a kid back in the 80s, I had always seen those tracks from the L train, and only in these modern times have been able to read about the history, and up to now only look at pictures of that freight line. Absolutely awesome adventure you two had! (Am in Southern California now)

Such a great time! It holds about 200 people & anything after that gets such shut down by nypd. Mfs be coming in with flashlights & shit 😭😭 .. we’re still coming in strong though. Such a dope spot !! 🔥

    That train station was closed in 1924. It was part of the LIRR Manhattan Beach branch. I believe this station was called Manhattan Crossing (not East NY). Manhattan Beach Branch ran parallel to the Bay Ridge branch for a few miles then turned south on to Manhattan Beach. Note: Those tracks are not abandoned. NY & Atlantic Railway freight uses that line from Fresh Pond to Bay Ridge. This line use to be electrified back when the New Haven Rail Road operated until the late '60s.

  • @yankinga
    @yankinga 5 месяцев назад

    The station was closed in 1924, when passenger service ended, and the branch has been freight only ever since. You can tell from the shiny rails that the line is still in use. Freight cars are floated on car floats (railroad barges) between Greenville, NJ and Bay Ridge. In the past, part of it wound up on the LIRR while a whole lot of it went north over the Hell Gate Bridge, to points in New England served by the New Haven RR. Although the line was owned by the LIRR, overhead 11,000 volt, AC catenary was installed to enable New Havens electric locomotives to operate through from New Haven to the float bridges in Bay Ridge. New York New Jersey Rail, (owned by the Port Authority of NY & NJ) is the successor to the Pennsylvania Railroad's car float operation. 4000 raillrad cars were floated across in 2021. By comparison, during the period from 1920-1950 the daily volume was around 1000 cars. With each float handling about 19 cars and 2 floats being moved at a time by a tugboat. That's something on the order of 26 crossings of Upper New York Bay each day. Each 4 mile crossing took 45 minutes. So it was basically a non-stop operation. I'm really enjoying your videos.
