Hi, thanks for posting, very clear instructions. Just got one question if I may. If the connecter that fits into the magnet has oil in it do I clean it or do I need to replace it? Many thanks, Rick (Cambridge, UK).
Before anyone changes these cam magnets make sure you have power coming out of both wires that attach to it. I think one wire is 4.7 volts and the other wire is about 12 volts with the key turned to the second position.
Fyi: This lufi XF1 was earlier swap for usr between two Hondas of both 1.5 litres engine. But one is otto cycle and other one is atkison cycle. On idling the atkison unit is having suction of only -0.15atm vs -0.45atm for otto cycle. Happy motoring.
Thanks a lot for the video! Do you think the clips and the cables should be changed as well? I have the same kind of leak and my local mechanic recommended to change the magnets the clips and the cables altogether to prevent the leak reaching to the ECU.
It depends if the update had already been done or not. There was a retrofit so that it rerouted the cables how they are on mine, so that the oil can’t flow into the ECU.

I replaced my timing chain and cam gears, aftermarket cam gears. I still hear a cold start noise from these cam gears when the oil drain from them. Is the only way to have a quiet cold start to use geniune Mercedes cam gears?
If oil starts leaking from these magnets, they will infiltrate the sensors attached to them and go all the way to the ECU and O2 sensor (lambda sensor) causing all kinds of errors and eventually compromising the ECU. (Not a cheap fix)
If the connector won't come off of the cam magnet unplug the extension from the harness and remove the cam magnet with the extension. You'll be able to get at the clips easier that way. It should come off relatively easily unless someone put it on crooked and bent the pins.

M 271 is well know for serious problems with cam chains stretching and sometimes jumping teeth causing catastrophic engine failure, definitely not one of Mercedes best efforts, M 111 is a far better power plant.
Good video ! However, you have missed one point. When refitting the magnets you need to put a 6mm drill shaft through the magnet centre hole and into the camshaft to align the magnet as you are fitting it. You then insert the middle rubber once the magnet is tightened in place. Otherwise you have have the magnet slightly out of place which will cause oil leakage.
While I found out about that later on, there is zero play for anything when you put it back together at least on my car. So you could align it but it would be the same as if you just put it on as there’s no play in the screws for the actual camshaft magnet to move at all

Check to make sure the intake is tight as well and that your PCV is not backed up or clogged. That can spray oil into the intake if you are camshaft magnets are not leaking
Why would oil be leaking into cam shaft magnets if PCV system is vented either into intake manifold or into suction of Eaton 45. I have just install a generic OBD2 plug & display unit Lufi XF. MAF reading at 5.4g/second. Rpm 850. Air manifold at 0.55atm (-55kpa). Throttle at 17.2% open. IAT 40 degC. O2 SENSOR AT 0.74V which is good. Calculations: a) 5.4g air/second = 4.9 litres air per second. B) 850rpm for 1.8litre engine = 7.08 suction strokes per second = 12.75 litres of displacement volume by all 4 piston in 1 second. C) 4.9/12.75 = 0.385 for ratio of air intake volume vs total displacement volume for every 1 second. This come to -61.5kpa or (-0.615 atm) inside cylinder at BDC. This should be correct as manifold pressure is always higher than pressure inside cylinder during suction stroke. The above does not take into account of gases coming from PCV system back into intake manifold and the gasoline spray by port injectors. So actual pressure in cylinder at BDC could be much closer to -55kpa. This Lufi XF is generic type reader. When it was on my honda ivetc engine it could read EGR valve opening value but not MAF and exhaust temperature. On W211 E200k year 2006 it could not read egr valve value and exhaust temperature.
