Trails of Cold Steel is my absolute favorite JRPG series, looking forward to experiencing the Crossbell series! Though it is weird that the PS4 version is missing so many things this still looks great! Thank you for what you do Tara, amazing as always! :)
@@Mike55690 XSEED has the English rights to the Sky Trilogy, and there is probably little incentive to put them out on the consoles. The first two were ported to the PSP, and was quite the painful saga getting them out.
I'd recommend you play Trails in the Sky trilogy first, they are excellent games and Estelle and Joshua makes an appearance in Zero continuing their story from Trails in the Sky the 3rd and if you start here it will spoil the story of the Sky arc.
Very disappointed in NIS for not mentioning this information about the PS4 version. I have limited Edition on preorder for PS4 and I can no longer cancel it and get the Switch version. To me these are not huge upgrades so it does not bother me to much. But NIS lack information on the matter does bother me alot tbh. Good review, really enjoyed it.
Thanks for the great review! I had preordered the PS4 versions of Zero and Azure because I own and played the PS4 versions of Cold Steel 1 through 4, and thoroughly enjoyed them... So I was a bit worried when I heard about the differences from the other ports! Everyone made them out to be deal breakers, so I was sure I would have to double-dip and buy them again on Switch before playing them :) You saved me some money, so thank you!
I usually go with Nintendo Switch when it comes to JRPG’s. I have Trails of cold steel 3 and 4 on Nintendo Switch and I’m really looking forward to whenever 1 and 2 get on the Switch. Right now I got 1 and 2 on the Ps Vita. It’s weird the order these games get localized on the Switch. Not only are we getting Azure next year but also Reverie.
Already have my ps4 version preordered! I couldn't even noticed the differences people were talking about until I looked at the pictures side by side. Doesn't matter to me. All versions of the sprite works have their own charm. Can't wait to play this amazing duology again!! Cross fingers they'll release the sky games on PS4 so we can have the whole collection on one console.

Thank you for this I was wondering what everyone was up in arms about. I'm probably getting the switch version. I do agree though Trails games you play more for the story then the graphics. Also thank you your videos are very informative and have helped me get into so many games I might of never gave a shot otherwise.
Planning to pick up ps4 to have as much of series as possible on one console. I originally played patched version on psp which had a few bugs so anything will be an upgrade for me. Hope you enjoy your time with this arc as it excels in places Cold Steel fell short imo. Smaller cast and setting which gets more focus in development, story pacing was a bit better to me (especially in Azure) and one of the most incredible endings in any games I’ve played to look forward to again.
I received my PS4 copy today, having not played any of the Trails games, i've just picked up a Steam Deck and the Trails in the Sky trilogy. So i'll start where the series began.

It's not just the fact the game doesn't have new HD textures like Switch/PC, it's also missing new convo logs, multiple battle speed options separate for in battle and out, multiple text size options, etc. Switch/PC are like complete remasters of the PS4 version despite releasing day and date
Played this game with the Geofront patch over a year ago, and loved it. This is a day 1 purchase for me, of a game I've already beaten and already completed. I just want to go to Crossbell again and see all of it unfold from the start.
Oh glad to see someone on the same page as me 😂. I’ve only started the first game recently and have been picking them all up on steam for super cheap as discounts rise.
Stick with it, I almost didn't finish FC because of the constant dialogue but when the story picked up for me I was so hooked I ended up playing every trails of game all the way up to cold steel 4 and it was worth it.
Having played TOCS 1/2 on Vita and 3/4 on Playstation 4 Pro within 1 year from each other I'm happy to be playing this game very soon :) I also getting Diofield Chronicles Valkyrie Profile Elysium Star Ocean 6 Great time to be a gamer.
I have all the other games on ps4 but am disappointed that the switch and pc versions get the new updated version while ps4 doesnt but for the same price. Kinda wack that it wasnt mentioned. I know its still fine to play the game this way but i dont want to

This is going to be my 2nd playthrough of the crossbell arc and I'm excited to experience this amazing arc again since so many amazing characters are introduced here.
Great first impression(oops, almost said review on instinct lol)! This makes me even more excited to play Zero for the first time. I'm getting the Switch...AND the PS4 version, just to support this series that I love so much! The Switch version ins the main one, not because of the extra QoL stuff but cause of portability. Portability with this series(and other long JRPG games like this one) is the best way to play it for me. I am really bummed that this and Azure won't have an English Dub as I loved the Dub VA's of the SSS in the Crossbell games and would've loved to hear them voice their characters in their origin games(in battles at least like what was done with the Sky games) but nothing I can do about that. Still really looking forward to this game and all the others that are gonna come in the next year. The Trails hype train starts from zero(heh) soon and it's only going to keep going on and on~!
I also do this occasionally lol I've substituted in other games by saving the video footage and rewinding and pausing rapidly lol a message log would be better of course!

Gameplay wise it is hard to go from cold steel to TitS (lmao I do have the brain of a 12 year old) because you have so much "help" in battle but it's also what make the game fun, idk how I was handling battles in trails in the sky before...
Been on preorder for months! Can't wait. Just about to hit 100 hours on cold steel 2 so I reckon I'll have it beat in time for this. Then wait for azure, then back again to cold steel 3 and 4. Ps4 version for me still, I don't mind missing the let's be honest, small changes

It runs so well on the switch! I very like the beginning of this game. I played like 5h. Crossbell is huge tho 😓 i hate big city especially in trails with all those npc to talk to 😅 I'm curious to see that SSS team growth since they didnt show themself too much in cold steel serie. I heard the ps4 version was under the others, i guess it's kinda ok even tho it's weird to be honest.
I got super lost last night trying to get back to the Geofront, it is indeed a big city 😅 I'm sure I'll get more used to the layout as I play. I'm at about 5 hours too now and am enjoying the slow and detailed pacing ^__^

It seems the reason the PS4 will not get the quallity of live enhancements is just Falcom being Falcom. As much as I love the series I hate how they handle their games in the West. Anyways, apart from the Log feature which is a thing they should have added since it's a text heavy game and sometimes our thumbs get trigger happy and we press a button too fast for our own good, the rest of the enhancements are just for those who want shiny games. Graphics is not everything and this series shows that with poise. And, remember guys: You PS4 players are able to pre-order very special versions, with a lot of extras and physical media, while we, PC players need to wait up to 27th to buy the game, without any kind of pre-order with Online codes to redeem the game on Steam, so in a way you guys are better off than we are XD
I don't mind that the PS4 version is just the Japan version translated in english, but I definitely agree that they should ask less money for it than Switch/PC.
I plan on getting it, but I still need to finish Trails in the Sky the 3rd, first. I started this series with Cold Steel I and II first, but took the advice that someone gave me and stopped to go back to start from the beginning (Trails the Sky FC). Not sure what version I am getting though.
While it triggered me that NISA got lazy with the PS4 port (If not a dub, the message log would've been nice ¬_¬), i'm still getting the duology since this is the only way to fill in the blanks of what happened around the time of CS (Leading to the infiltration of the Geofront)
i will do it as soon as finish my JP Kuro 1 Platinum since there is not so much preorder bonus or whatsoever digitally. especially since i do played the GEO version like a year back. also will do the PS4 version because the save transfer bonus to Reverie that is gonna be released TBA 2023. i already had all CS 1-4 on PS so i will close everything over there too. but may be starting Kuro every english release i gonna do it on Steam since how long this game translated to english. I will do JP on my PS and play it again in english on steam
Glad theirs someone put there that is bashing the PS4 version of the game. Is it the best version? No but that doesn't stop people from people CS3 and CS4 at a higher price on the Switch (or literally damn near any multiplatform game on the Switch when the Steam and Playstation versions of those are are probably cheaper and definitely superior BUT IT'S PORTABLE THOO). Point is the only people you'll hear complain about the PS4 version are the people who didn't play it just know it's inferior and it'll bash it to the point where you think that the PS4 version is unplayable which obviously isn't the case. If you're only option is the Playstation version I'm here to tell you right now it is no where near as bad as you hear the internet says it is. You'll be fine if you pick up that version if you wanted to.
Really wanna play this but unfortunately gonna be waiting until it goes on sale. Call me petty but I refuse to pay the same price for an inferior product.
Question. Does ps4 version have save data bonuses? I know this games save data will give bonuses in upcoming games. That's one reason I may stick to ps4
I didn’t receive any in my time playing :3 I imagine if future Trails come over though, you may get a bonus for playing it in those games (but that’s just a guess :3)

I still play it AFTER I beat Kuro 2 and the upcoming 6th star ocean game besides Kuro 1 and 2's ENGLISH dub likely won't be out until 2025 to 2026 so theirs still time for me to play Zero its Sequel and Hajimari's English dub so I don't need to play all 3 yet.
I really love the series but wish we can catch up since we are like 3 games behind also I do think falcom should take a break from legends of heroes and do ys/tokyo xanadu sequel since I heard the sales for legend of heroes showing exhaustion
I don’t think the problem lies in the quality of the ports themselves, but more so the fact that all 3 are being advertised as the same product when the PS4 port is objectively inferior comparatively.
I definitely understand why the controversy was there and you’re right, it’s because of the way the versions were advertised and everything was communicated (it should have been clearer, I agree). But the reaction to everything also made me worry about my PS4 version so I was happy to see it was fine and wanted to express that here :3 naturally I still hope these things are communicated better in future versions! (for example for Azure if it’s the same situation)
Yeah I'm a grab it. I have 1 - 3 for trails cold steel on PS4 but I'm a just grab 3 (again) on Switch and play 4 on Switch as well. Getting trails from Zero and Azure and any other trails game on Switch.
@@Pharmboy6 I've played and full completed Persona 5, Shin Megami Tensei 5, Trails of Cold Steel 1 & 2, and Fire Emblem Three Houses. I mainly play Monster Hunter and Pokémon tho so in between I play Tales of, Trails, and a few other games like Trials of Maná. Also picking up Crisis Core, Trinity Trigger, Fire Emblem Engage and Fire Emblem Three Hopes eventually. Then Atelier Ryza 3, then Xenoblade 1 - 3 🙏🏽
I usually beat a trails game within a month of buying it. I beat persona 5 in a little over a week and that game is longer than any trails game but you really have to play it everyday, all day to do that 😆
As long as you’re okay with stuff that’s less modern, I personally would say yes! Technically it’s not the beginning beginning (Sky is), but the beginning of an arc is always a good place to start IMO :3
A bit more carried over from Sky in this one in the form of subplot. It won’t really affect the main story too much but for me the parts that carried on from Sky were the best part of Zero. Sky FC or Cold Steel 1 may be slightly better entry points as they are more fresh starts. Sky is the introduction to the world and probably the best place to start. Cold Steel I believe was intended to be a 2nd entry point and is mostly self contained but a few minor things can go over your head if you aren’t familiar with the greater world like certain character’s affiliations with certain groups.
I think is the worst option, has a lot of spoilers (or worst things imposible to understand) from trails in the sky. You should star with the Liberl Arc or the more modern Erebonian Arc.
I just need to know one thing. Are there chest messages in the PS4 version? These were messages from the previous Trails in the Sky games that were often humorous and could be found by checking a chest after looting its contents.
A lot of it is graphical, there are certain things like draw distance and the message log too, but a majority I would say is about graphics and visuals. I linked in the description the Steam blogs that detail it more so that will be much more detailed if you want to know :)

Honestly a shame that the PS4 version looks worse than the geofront patch. Paying full console price for a 10 year old game rereleased in 2022 should get you a better experience than buying a 5$ copy of the joyoland version and patching it. The western release of crossbell has honestly been such a monkey's paw for the series. Huge delays for the modern games to squeeze crossbell in and then NisA even go after the fantranslations. They can't even get a unified quality release across all 3 platforms nor can they inform their customers that one platform clearly got shafted.
I played Zero and Azure when the unofficial Geofront localizations were released. They should have just plugged the Geofront translation into the different versions and not bothered to make any other changes. It's more important to get Reverie and Kuro out than it is to put too much extra effort into these.

As a habitual accidental button pusher, the text log is a must for me, as I often skip a line by mistake because my dumb brain refuses to learn.

Anyways, apart from the Log feature which is a thing they should have added since it's a text heavy game and sometimes our thumbs get trigger happy and we press a button too fast for our own good, the rest of the enhancements are just for those who want shiny games. Graphics is not everything and this series shows that with poise.
And, remember guys: You PS4 players are able to pre-order very special versions, with a lot of extras and physical media, while we, PC players need to wait up to 27th to buy the game, without any kind of pre-order with Online codes to redeem the game on Steam, so in a way you guys are better off than we are XD
I don't mind that the PS4 version is just the Japan version translated in english, but I definitely agree that they should ask less money for it than Switch/PC.

I plan on getting it, but I still need to finish Trails in the Sky the 3rd, first. I started this series with Cold Steel I and II first, but took the advice that someone gave me and stopped to go back to start from the beginning (Trails the Sky FC). Not sure what version I am getting though.

While it triggered me that NISA got lazy with the PS4 port (If not a dub, the message log would've been nice ¬_¬), i'm still getting the duology since this is the only way to fill in the blanks of what happened around the time of CS (Leading to the infiltration of the Geofront)
Does this version still come with the double speed? It doesn’t matter to me about the graphics as much

i will do it as soon as finish my JP Kuro 1 Platinum since there is not so much preorder bonus or whatsoever digitally. especially since i do played the GEO version like a year back.
also will do the PS4 version because the save transfer bonus to Reverie that is gonna be released TBA 2023. i already had all CS 1-4 on PS so i will close everything over there too. but may be starting Kuro every english release i gonna do it on Steam since how long this game translated to english. I will do JP on my PS and play it again in english on steam
Glad theirs someone put there that is bashing the PS4 version of the game. Is it the best version? No but that doesn't stop people from people CS3 and CS4 at a higher price on the Switch (or literally damn near any multiplatform game on the Switch when the Steam and Playstation versions of those are are probably cheaper and definitely superior BUT IT'S PORTABLE THOO). Point is the only people you'll hear complain about the PS4 version are the people who didn't play it just know it's inferior and it'll bash it to the point where you think that the PS4 version is unplayable which obviously isn't the case. If you're only option is the Playstation version I'm here to tell you right now it is no where near as bad as you hear the internet says it is. You'll be fine if you pick up that version if you wanted to.

Question. Does ps4 version have save data bonuses? I know this games save data will give bonuses in upcoming games. That's one reason I may stick to ps4
I didn’t receive any in my time playing :3 I imagine if future Trails come over though, you may get a bonus for playing it in those games (but that’s just a guess :3)
@@JRPGJungle it was announced that zero/azure will have bonuses in Reverie. I will grab this on switch tho... its looks really nice and I've never had a trails on portable. Missed the ps3/vita days. Cold steel 1 was my first game. Naturally falcom is now my 😍 dev
I still play it AFTER I beat Kuro 2 and the upcoming 6th star ocean game besides Kuro 1 and 2's ENGLISH dub likely won't be out until 2025 to 2026 so theirs still time for me to play Zero its Sequel and Hajimari's English dub so I don't need to play all 3 yet.
Man, I dunno know why, but this game just makes me think of Shining Force 3.
I really love the series but wish we can catch up since we are like 3 games behind also I do think falcom should take a break from legends of heroes and do ys/tokyo xanadu sequel since I heard the sales for legend of heroes showing exhaustion
I don’t think the problem lies in the quality of the ports themselves, but more so the fact that all 3 are being advertised as the same product when the PS4 port is objectively inferior comparatively.
I definitely understand why the controversy was there and you’re right, it’s because of the way the versions were advertised and everything was communicated (it should have been clearer, I agree). But the reaction to everything also made me worry about my PS4 version so I was happy to see it was fine and wanted to express that here :3 naturally I still hope these things are communicated better in future versions! (for example for Azure if it’s the same situation)

Yeah I'm a grab it. I have 1 - 3 for trails cold steel on PS4 but I'm a just grab 3 (again) on Switch and play 4 on Switch as well. Getting trails from Zero and Azure and any other trails game on Switch.
Ur talking about 100 hrs rpg... im not sure u can just "grab em" and play em. Haha. But please support falcom so we can get more titles.
@@Pharmboy6 I've played and full completed Persona 5, Shin Megami Tensei 5, Trails of Cold Steel 1 & 2, and Fire Emblem Three Houses. I mainly play Monster Hunter and Pokémon tho so in between I play Tales of, Trails, and a few other games like Trials of Maná. Also picking up Crisis Core, Trinity Trigger, Fire Emblem Engage and Fire Emblem Three Hopes eventually. Then Atelier Ryza 3, then Xenoblade 1 - 3 🙏🏽
I usually beat a trails game within a month of buying it. I beat persona 5 in a little over a week and that game is longer than any trails game but you really have to play it everyday, all day to do that 😆

As long as you’re okay with stuff that’s less modern, I personally would say yes! Technically it’s not the beginning beginning (Sky is), but the beginning of an arc is always a good place to start IMO :3
Well I recommend starting with the sky trilogy. It’s only on pc though. The rest of the games can be played on PlayStation.
A bit more carried over from Sky in this one in the form of subplot. It won’t really affect the main story too much but for me the parts that carried on from Sky were the best part of Zero. Sky FC or Cold Steel 1 may be slightly better entry points as they are more fresh starts. Sky is the introduction to the world and probably the best place to start. Cold Steel I believe was intended to be a 2nd entry point and is mostly self contained but a few minor things can go over your head if you aren’t familiar with the greater world like certain character’s affiliations with certain groups.
I think is the worst option, has a lot of spoilers (or worst things imposible to understand) from trails in the sky. You should star with the Liberl Arc or the more modern Erebonian Arc.
I just need to know one thing. Are there chest messages in the PS4 version? These were messages from the previous Trails in the Sky games that were often humorous and could be found by checking a chest after looting its contents.

So I’m confused what are the features that are on switch and pc that are not ps4 I mean if it’s graphical features I don’t care lol.
A lot of it is graphical, there are certain things like draw distance and the message log too, but a majority I would say is about graphics and visuals. I linked in the description the Steam blogs that detail it more so that will be much more detailed if you want to know :)
@@JRPGJungle oh ok cool well I’m sticking with my ps4 copy I got the other ones on PS4 and I’m not changing systems because of a graphical difference and a chat log. There are a lot of jrpgs without chat logs. Plus I want to keep the consistency on one platform. And keep up the videos I’m always looking forward to your videos.

Honestly a shame that the PS4 version looks worse than the geofront patch.
Paying full console price for a 10 year old game rereleased in 2022 should get you a better experience than buying a 5$ copy of the joyoland version and patching it.
The western release of crossbell has honestly been such a monkey's paw for the series.
Huge delays for the modern games to squeeze crossbell in and then NisA even go after the fantranslations.
They can't even get a unified quality release across all 3 platforms nor can they inform their customers that one platform clearly got shafted.

I played Zero and Azure when the unofficial Geofront localizations were released.
They should have just plugged the Geofront translation into the different versions and not bothered to make any other changes.
It's more important to get Reverie and Kuro out than it is to put too much extra effort into these.
I'm always tempted to buy nintendo versions because they usually have better quality control and don't get the attention from third parties.
At first I was puzzled why there wouldn't be pairity with all versions, but I'm actually glad Falcom's original version is still getting an international release on some form. It makes my inevitable double dip even more exciting xD
Honestly, this is one of Trails arcs I've been looking forward to the most
