The Secret to catching FEROX Trout - FISHING Scotland
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- In this episode, I team up with good friend, Phil from @anotherangleUK, This was our second trip this year, fishing on Loch Awe Scotland. The first trip was a 12hr trolling session in strong winds, which resulted in no fish. The target species is Ferox wild brown trout. Although we did not catch a Ferox the first time, this proved to be a huge learning curve as this was also our first time trolling in this way using downriggers. We both received some great advise and tactics from viewers and from followers on social media and in this episode we put our new found knowledge to the test.

Living in Wales and hearing rumours of the deep glacial lakes holding these. Fingers crossed I don't have to sell a kidney to go give it a try, but it'd be a lifetime catch for someone used to catching 5inchers 😂
😂😂I’m sure there will be mate. Any boat even a SIB or kayak can be adapted to troll for Ferox buddy.
Please ditch the music
Top men sir wonderful video men and a stunning country 🏴🏴🏴
Many thanks Stephen, thanks for commenting and watching mate
Great video and what a fish.!
Nice to see a red coastliner as well - i have one myself, albeit a fair bit older! Out of interest - why hp is your main outboard? I still have the original 20hp mercury 2 stroke with a 2.3 honda back up, i’ve had issues with my main engine but have kept it going over the yrs and have been thinking about replacing it with maybe a 15hp. Not sure if that is a good idea or to stick with 20. Random qu i know just couldn’t make out the hp of the Tohatsu. Many thanks 👍
Hi mate and thanks for your comments very much appreciated. The boat belongs to Phil. The main engine is 20hp 4 stroke. He’s done a few videos now on his boat with some great content on the boats setup and equipment. On @anotherangleuk
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing cheers, subbed to his channel and thanks for clarifying the engine hp. All the best 👍
@@highlandfishingdiary8818 What year is your Coastliner? Mine was built in 1990.
@@anotherangleUK i need to check the plate on it but maybe yours is just better maintained and gel coat much shinier 😆 you’ve got it kitted out nice with the swivel seats. i think it’s maybe a bit earlier in the late 80s but can’t be much older! I bought it in 2007 from a retired fella in Rochester on the Thames Estuary and dragged it back to Skye. Had some great days out up here fishing and just going out to watch wildlife etc, used to do a few creels too and my lad really is into all that so hoping to do a bit more of that with the half dozen on so. I’m sure the engine is pre-90s it’s the older squarer mercury design, I got some manuals that are for the next model up, off Caley Marine that helped when I did the service on it a couple of yrs back, as it’s not easy getting it to anywhere to get it done. Been thinking of a new engine but you know what family life is like, it’s not always the priority 👍 i’ll check that date and catch up with your videos. All the best.
Lovely to see another Coastliner - particularly with a red hull! We have had ours for 32 years, and it wasn’t new when we bought it, so it’s a fair age. Hull number 214, so I’ll have to check with Orkney when it was actually built.
As we are never likely to be using the boat at sea (we live about as far from the sea as you can get in Scotland), we don’t need things like navigation lights or VHF. So far all the the fishing has been on the local loch at the foot of our drive. We still have the original 2 stroke Mariner outboard that came with the boat, but I would really like to upgrade to a 4 stroke. 15 hp is quite adequate for our needs, and I think that one of the advantages of the 4 stroke over the 2 stroke is that it can purr along at low speeds.
Anyway, I’m glad to have stumbled across your site, and will continue to follow your adventures. Tight lines, James.
Thanks for sharing what your using guys. Great to find lads willing to share information. You're promoting the sport brilliantly lads. 👏
No problem buddy, we’ll be back at it next year. Thanks for commenting and watching much appreciated👍🎣
What a fish incredible! Would love 1 like that someday or even half that size would do
Thanks Ryan, we certainly felt very fortunate to get it so early in our ferox quest. Thanks for watching and commenting buddy. Tight lines
Hi great stuff....We used to get a boat from loch Awe boats. As there was many a rainbow "ESCAPED"? from
the farm nets at the start of the River awe.Consequently I am a little suprised you didn`t bump
into a few!
Cheers and ATB.
Thanks Berti and tight lines
Great fishing with my buddy. Video captured the day really well. Can't wait to get out again. Phil.
As always mate a great day out. Always nice to get a new species and a very worthy PB💪🏻🎣I’m just as happy to have witnessed it👍
Great video Douglas. That's what I really like about your channel, lots of variety.
Thanks Fred, as always thanks for watching👍tight lines if you get out to cast a line🎣
Well done guys, Super fish! Liked you DIY stuff as well Dougal. Is that you onto your next mission now?
Thanks Liam, we’ll probably give the ferox trout another bash before the season is out. I desperately want to get some sea fishing in soon tho. Thanks for watching mate
Excellent video - fantastic quality and everything so well explained. Hope you get your own ferox soon.
Thanks Jim, here’s hoping. we hope to do it again before the end of the season. Tight lines.
Great information, have you tried Carolina rig with a big lob worm? If you put a kink in the hook, it’ll give nice action. Fox rage do some great clip on weights if you need to change the weight at any point 👍
We haven’t tried other tactics yet as we were still feeling our way into the whole ferox concept.?we may try different methods this year.?thanks for the information mate👍
To be fair, that is a big fish, I would just switch to dead bait and see if you can push it a little. A large lobworm might work, would be worth running a few rods to see what they fancy.

Cracking vid that wiz a stoater of a fish and in a braw condition and whit a cracking veiw keep up yer guid work and thanks.Rab.
Thanks Rab much appreciated mate🎣👍
Looking forward to the next video now, well done guy's a lot of effort but when the weather and scenery is this good time goes by so fast you hardly notice it and the reward was well worth it.
Thanks G, yeah before we launched the boat, we spoke to an angler who just came in. He has fished Loch Awe for 30 years and only had 3 ferox. We thought we’d be up against it, but we just settled into enjoying the days fishing and chatting. Thankfully we were blessed very quickly, in terms of time we were expecting to put into this campaign. As always appreciate your comments buddy👍
Looking forward to the next episode. Beautiful fish, well done guys for a team effort.
Thanks Gordon, team work makes the dream work and believe me, I was just as happy as Phil when that fish came aboard. Thanks for watching mate👍
Great video , but why don’t yous leave the big boys alone and clear the shit that’s causing the massive problems that loch has , roach bream and all the other stuff introduced to a once fantastic wild brown trout fishing loch , rainbow farming , forestry seepage, I know yous guys are anglers but that loch is in serious trouble, and has been for many many years , rant over .as a wild brown trout angler.👍
I got one in lomond last year just at balloch
Thanks for letting me know, I’m sure there are some monsters in Lomond but I’m not willing to pay the game fishing permit for there. Tight lines mate
Fantastic. Great to see such careful fish handling. I wondered if you have ever attempted to troll for Arctic Char with downrigger gear or similar. I watched a film years ago about professional Char fishermen in the Lake District. They were fishing with hemp lines and mono leaders. They had large numbers of small handmade and highly polished lures attached to the lines which were attached to long bamboo poles with a bell on the end for bite indication. Loch Awe and other glacial lochs hold good populations of Char. I know you like a challenge.
Hello Jimmy, I have considered trolling for Arctic Char as I have seen that video your talking about in the Lake District which is very interesting. That maybe one for the future as char is a species I like to target from the bank also. Many thanks for your comments mate👍
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Great stuff. Your channel is brilliant. I really enjoy the films. Well done. Loch Doon has char and also some big Ferox but no-one targets them. I've had Char trailing Mepps or spoons.
@@jimmykirkland6249 many thanks Jimmy it’s great to get positive feedback on the channel. Loch Doon could be one for the future on the kayak, interesting that there is char in it too👍
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing They are there in good numbers. They are protected and must be returned. I'm sure the Ferox must target them .
Great video, professional as ever - and stunning ferox.
Hi guys what speed are ye trolling at?
Hi mate, we were trolling between 1.5 - 2 knots
Nice one, thanks a lot!@@PiscatorUK-Fishing
Just found this channel all the way in Sacramento California. Beautiful fish, beautiful lake!
Thank you for watching my friend👍
A friend of mines dad has a house on loch lohman and he use to catch tiny trout in a stream and free line for them ferrox trout, they look like a great fighter..
Cheers Robbie, yeah they give a good fight, the water has been a bit warmer of late. I imagine they will fight even harder when the water is cooler.
Great work guys I would recommend you get a good sized net for that size of trout makes it easier for you netting and for the fish
Thanks for watching and commenting. It’s a fair point about the net, we both thought the same at the time👍
Awesome video lad’s we’ll done on the fish , thanks for the mention also 👍🎣🎣
Cheers mate, thanks again for the advice buddy, tight lines mate🎣💪🏻
Great to see you guys have teamed up for the day.I like the experimental inventions, they are my style.
Thanks Stan, it was a great day out on the water, it’s always nice when you achieve something you have your mind set on. Yeah I’m a sucker for trying to improve existing bits and bobs, sometimes it works, if not try something different.
Beauty Ferrox ... looked a fantastic day on the boat👍
Thanks buddy, we felt very fortunate to get the fish on film. It does make the experience so much better when the weather plays ball and an amazing place to fish.
Excelent i love fishing for ferox !
Cheers mate, it’s something we will definitely do again as I’ve yet to land one🙏🏻🤞
