Greece’s Summer of Fire and Anger

- Опубликовано: 3 сен 2021
- After a week of wildfires, VICE World News travelled to the island of Evia, Greece to meet local villagers that defied evacuation orders. With insufficient forces on the ground, volunteer firefighters took matters into their own hands and fought the fires themselves. They are angry at the mismanagement of the country’s fire services, a force that has long been underfunded and ill-prepared to tackle the onslaught of the climate crisis.
This is Greece's summer of fire and anger.

I was actually in one of the fires this summer, i was traveling on the highway near Patra and we were escorted off by the police to keep going on side streets, we keep going and the smoke gets thicker, eventually we open the door and could feel the heat of the fire. We turned around and got stuck in a huge traffic jam for a half hour trying to escape. At one point we put our wallets and phones in our backpacks and were ready to ditch the car. The cops led us toward the fire, then opened no routes for escape, zero communication, i saw cops walking around hands in pocket like nothing was happening, eventually the kids from the village came out and started escorting traffic, doing the polices job!! Eventually thank God we got out and headed back towards Athens, we saw a block up at least 5km long of cars, who would have to sleep there that night, absolute mess, i thought i was gonna die, something similar happened in Mati a couple years ago, catastrophe.
The thing is though a lot of the fires are Arson, assholes and deadbeats

Yes, we had a prolonged dry summer with 3 heat waves and fewer rains during the other seasons. I come from Samos, it's what everybody pointed out.
@@SatounoKumo wow so fires like these are actually abnormal. I grew up in California and we have a Mediterranean climate similar to yours and fires are a very common part of the dry season. Let’s hope the rest of the region can better prepare for dry seasons like this in future.
@@petecapri4054 it is a natural thing but when it happens too often the time to heal shortens and forests change. The most unatural thing however is the system that cut down fire prevention services thus the fire spread from sea to sea and burned 0,5million acres. (Strema not acre but similar)
@@petecapri4054 Fires may be normal for us California, but we’ve seen far more extreme and intense fires in the last five years than ever. Our old fires wouldn’t kill all the trees, flame up into treetops, and send embers flying for miles, but that’s what’s happening now.
If you look at Cal Fire’s rankings of the state’s biggest fires, they are all in the last five years. This year, given how the Dixie fire is going, the acreage burned is likely to be 50% more than last year, almost identical to how bad it’ll be in Greece according to this video.
Oh my goodness..sorry to hear about this destruction...please stay save and stay strong ...
One common theme in all fires around the world was emergency personnel were not showing up and many whom stayed behind, some with the ability to tackle the fire, were told not to go into the fire zone. In one instance someone said, had they just been allowed to fight the fire, they could have put it out. Anger doesn't even begin to express the shocking truth that many governments aren't actually here for the people but moreso for their own benefit and citizens needs fall in last place.
Governments, the world over, have ceased caring for the very people they represent. Unrepentant human greed has almost sealed our fate.
as a greek myself 2-4 days ago I was at a concert when I spot my phone going off full volume.. but I realized that everybody at the place I was had an alert for the fire. it got me scared and I am afraid it will attack Athens..nice and more.. or even fire. I hope this isn't going to become worst but I remember yesterday I went outside and it was so hot and it was dark it was 1 am and yet it felt hot.../my english sucks ik /please be crarefull fire like this can be spootted with plastic or anything ..that will take the sun to destroy it.

Your english is fluent enough
This is very heart-breaking.
The snapshot before you watch this video looks like the trailer of a major motion picture! Gladiator, the Greek fire fighter!!!
"I want to eat bread with dirty hands. And savor it". I love it.
Its odd, thoes burned trees and lands covered in nothing but black/gray ash... they have this terrefying, haunting beauty to it, if you just saw that picture there could be some beauty to it, but mix with the suffering and pain of the people and it paints a picture that is hard to describe with words.
5:10
Firefighter with cigarette in his hand 0:16 LOL
Should start an international fire fighting charity and employ special units with the best equipment to fight these fires in help with local firefighters... this is gonna be a new norm by the looks of it.
😲😲 sorry for them
RUclips once again a good source for international news.
This is just heartbreaking
You have my most sincere condolences ♡
