I love motion so much! I am a theatre major and even though I have more hands on work than other degrees it helps me brainstorm ideas for performances and keeps my ideas in one spot so my lecturers and teachers can see my inner and out working to assess at the end of the semester! Love it Sm and your note taking strategy was super cool Ruby!
Exactly! I'm a student of production design for film which is also pretty hands on, but notion is soo great for brainstorming, research and showing my ideas to other crew members!
This will be so helpful! My notes are a mess and it's not even the end of the first semester yet, haha! And apparently I clicked on this 24 seconds after it was posted. I've never been that early to anything, haha! Thanks in advance for the video. I use Notion too so this is really well timed. :)
I’ve never used Notion as I mostly take physical notes in a book, but I’ve been looking for a digital note taking method and tossing up between OneNote and Notion- I think you may have convinced me Ruby!! Thank you, you’re great! 💞
I absolutely love notion, after watching your previous video on notion I was inspired to try it out. It’s so well layer out and allows my work to be very organised!

I would absolutely love a video about the content of your notes! I'm currently spending the day reading a dense philosophy book for tomorrow, and coming from less of a literature background, I haven't quite figured out what to look for in a text and what to highlight, and how to organize the hierarchy of those thoughts (especially since it's more of a network than a tree). Would love to hear your expert advice on this in the future if you like! I have ADHD and you introducing me to notion and showing how you use it has changed my academic life. It is the only thing that has been able to get me organized and help me study. Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Ruby I just discovered Notion through you and omg...it is so beautiful! There is every possible option for organizing everything in life. Thank you so so much for making a tutorial video about it, it helped me a lot. Thank you!!!!
I’ve been using notion for just over a year because Ruby recommended it. It’s my go to for everything. I would be completely stuffed if it went down or everything disappeared. Luckily mine is attached to my email so I can log in on anything. Didn’t know I could get a premium version. I’m going to look into that now ! Thanks Ruby! My university year would be doomed without notion!
Listening to your enthusiasm about Notion made me feel like trying it myself, with your template I hope even I can use it. I am so bad on digital work. Thank you very much.

they had some issues with server connection, which happens to any company from time to time. But with notion, if there any connection issue, you cant access to any of your notes. Do you ever get worried about?
Even if my university system in Italy is nothing like yours in England (they give us books to study on our own and 70% of the time they are not even on the exam... The lessons/laboratories aren't related to the books but they are considered like an extra "book"... If you don't follow the lessons you have another 1 or 2 book to study other than the normal books given... They rarely give us extra readings thank god and what on earth is a seminar??) this video was very useful and I'll use a few tips for my Notion! Thank you!
Hi, Ruby! I know you probably won't read this, like it or reply to it but your videos are amazing!! I have been watching them for two years and I won't stop anytime soon. So if you are reading this, thank you!
Thank you so much! I'm starting sixth form in a few weeks and I've been looking for a note taking app for class (I've got a condition which means I can't write properly by hand) and this may be the one I end up using.
I'm doing a science degree, so maybe it's different, but I'm a bit confused by how many critical readings/essays seem to be required on your degree, or English Lit degrees in general. We have to do a lot of critical analysis in our essays, and whilst we can make reference to critical analysis from other researchers, if we only did this we would get a low grade; we have to include our own critical analysis. Why does English Literature as a subject seem to rely on other critical analysis as opposed to students own original thoughts? Would be interested to hear your experience on this Ruby, or anyone else studying English Lit.
To be fair, critical essays (at least to this amount) are not required. Students are expected to learn about key notions and important stuff but they are also expected to think about the text and form a coherent opinion/point of view. I haven't known a single person who reads critical essasy before reading the actual books. Seems like it would tell you what to think before you can make up your mind about it yourself. Maybe Ruby does it to get better marks on her essasy, idk, but to me it seems a lot of busywork for no good reason. 🤷♀️
In my experience original thoughts are the most important in English lit, backed up by critical reading. I'm taking an English lit course at the moment, and the tutor has emphasized that for our assignment they are interested in our thoughts and analysis. The more original the better. Secondary sources and quotes to be kept to a minimum. I'm not saying critical reading isn't important, but it's about using it to deepen understanding and support your own ideas and arguments about the text. I can't see why you'd need to read more than two or three secondary sources. The focus is the primary text.
I'm an English lit student too and have never heard of someone reading critical material until they have their own argument regarding the text established. What it looks like Ruby is doing is using the critical material to form an argument / understanding and then reading the text, then trying to pass off those thoughts as original. I don't know what it's like at Exeter but at most top universities they would be able to tell and would probably tear you to shreds over it, as it's lazy and unoriginal. I don't have any huge issues with her but she does give English lit a bad name due to how she's seemingly rewarded for taking shortcuts. You would never get away with this at Cambridge / Oxford / Durham etc. I'm kinda glad she didn't get in, as she would have crumbled in tutorials where they would grill her on her arguments.
Original thought is THE most important thing at higher stages of Lit study. The whole point of a dissertation, for example, is to engage with original thoughts and demonstrate that you can form your own arguments and put across your own readings in a sustained, extended piece of work. I have a horrible feeling this is something Ruby will struggle immensely with. It should always be read primary texts, consider your own responses to what you have read, and THEN move onto secondary readings.
I studied social science but did take quite a few classes meant for English lit students because of my personal interest, and really you are not required to spend so much time reading secondary materials on bachelor level (unless you're writing your final thesis, I guess). As long as you are used to forming your own critical analysis and opinions while reading books, reading the original materials and digesting them well & listening to the lecture and utilising seminars will be enough to do well on essays and exams. Without these, tons of secondary critical readings won't do. Honestly this is why I like Ruby's contents but don't think she's particularly productive, because what she does is simply not productive. Despite all the busywork, the way she talks about the books she read (here, on goodreads, on her other social media, etc.) is so shallow and sometimes the result of downright misinterpretation. But I can easily see why it works for her younger fans who still haven't experienced uni themselves.
I've got about 10 chapters left and I'm really loving it! I wouldn't say it's my favourite, but I love that it's even more political than Dickens's earlier novels -- and especially how it looks at issues of public health x
@@phoebewashington2709 As in, I think he's much more aware of his influence by the time he writes Bleak House. His journal Household Words is well established by the time this is being serialised, and he's a full-on celebrity by this point. I feel like Bleak House is an accumulation of his social criticism from earlier books. I mean, he's obviously super critical of the court, but also the absurdity of politics (Boodle, Coodle, Doodle etc.), wilful ignorance to poverty (Jo and Skimpole), poor sanitation (the Fog!!!), derelict housing (Tom-All-Alone's). The list goes on. All of his books deal with social issues ofc but I feel like it's more overt in this one. I'd be interested to hear if you agree? xx

Not Ruby inspiring us to be more academic. Lol. 🌻 I really loved the video. I really need help with how to take notes during lectures because I cannot seem to be able to take proper notes during lectures.
i actually started using notion when i first saw you using it and i really love it but i do wish they had an undo button, because i tend to accidentally mess something up and then i'm always scrambling to fix it again...
There is undo and redo buttons in the top right corner when you click on the three dots, and here are some shortcuts to undo but i haven’t actually tried them -Mac: CMD + Z -Windows: CTRL + Z -iOS: Shake iPhone back and forth and select Undo.
Amazing video, Ruby. May I ask, what exactly did you mean in your notes by" Dickens was aware of genealogy of books"? Was it the one based on philosophical approach in literature? Could you possibly explain it more? I would be interested to know the source of it as well, because it caught my attention and I would like to research the matter further. Thank you so much in advance x
is there anyone that can tell me how i can make my pages "pop out" like that at 6:15 cause i cannot figure out how to do that?? when i make a page within a page it just takes me to the new page without staying on the first page
Hey :) Notion only does that "pop up" thing for pages inside of databases (tables, lists and such). If it's simply a standard sup-page, it will open fully. Hope that helped :)

Hi Ruby! How's studying going? I'm going into my third year of Uni doing an English literature module starting in October. I came to watch this video again as I'm thinking I'll use Notion for note taking this time instead of handwriting them on GoodNotes. The annotating in Kindle app was a light bulb moment, but the Kindle App doesn't seem to have the same features for annotating and having a sidebar open anymore (not that I can see anyway). Are you still doing this, and if so am I missing something obvious? Thanks for the ever helpful study content! I'm just about to start Bleak House too, wish me luck! 🤓
Hi, anyone who has notion- do u know if you can use accents from other languages and stuff? I tried it and it was not letting me. Also, can you use scientific diagrams and charts on there? It seems like its very much aimed at English lit.
I'm not sure what the status is on using other languages - it works well for German (though that's perhaps not too different from English), but they're also working on making it accessible to other languages as well. As to the scientific part - I don't study anything scientific myself, so I'm not quite sure what your specific requirements would be... I know that Notion has the option of writing equations with mathematical symbols. Databases let you create spreadsheets, though that's probably only useful to a limited extent. I don't think there's an option for creating diagrams and charts, but you can always include pictures and screenshots. Notion also works together with different apps and such, which lets you incorporate stuff from those in your own notion pages. Maybe there's an extension which could be helpful. In general I guess you're right, Notion is pretty text-based. But I wouldn't reduce it to just English lit - I study design and use it for pretty much everything in uni, but mostly also just for organizing my life 😄 You do have to invest some effort to make it work for you, but that's always the case with a do-it-yourself organizational system. Sorry for the long reply 😅 Hope it helped :)
I'm going to make a notion page on Ruby taking notes on notion lol.

It is quite unfortunate that lots of people don't have notion, hopefully it will soon become the new zoom!
Guess I’m starting to take notes now
You know, I may have a shot at Notion and see if it helps with my novel I want to write.
Your videos are superb productive I love your videos
Notion is great for notes, but don’t keep any sensitive info such as passwords in it, it’s not the most secure.
i actually started using notion when i first saw you using it and i really love it but i do wish they had an undo button, because i tend to accidentally mess something up and then i'm always scrambling to fix it again...
There is undo and redo buttons in the top right corner when you click on the three dots, and here are some shortcuts to undo but i haven’t actually tried them
-Mac: CMD + Z
-Windows: CTRL + Z
-iOS: Shake iPhone back and forth and select Undo.
@@simplyydodo omg i didn't know that! you just blew my mind! thank you!
@@sophiakatharina7725 you’re welcome!! :)
Thank you very much 😍😍
You have a fan from Egypt
I have been waiting fall long for this
But what of annotations of text WITHIN Notion? Why do you want to work in one app (kendle) for reading and annotation, and another (Notion) for ????
thank you for this!! Can we have a video on some of YOUR time management tips?😃

Would love to hear this to! :)
Ahhh. This is the video I've been wanting for ages. :0
How do you find that Mac Book pro for video editing? Does it go laggy at all? Cheers! x
Notion seems lovely... I'm just upset that the app isn't avalable for older phones. I use my phone much more than my pc including productivity stuff
is there anyone that can tell me how i can make my pages "pop out" like that at 6:15 cause i cannot figure out how to do that?? when i make a page within a page it just takes me to the new page without staying on the first page
Hey :) Notion only does that "pop up" thing for pages inside of databases (tables, lists and such). If it's simply a standard sup-page, it will open fully. Hope that helped :)
ive needed this video so bad as a first year aha
Congrats on your sponsorship
Can you pls remind us what iPad paper like screen protector you recommended? 😊
I’ve watched this multiple times and I’m still so confused haha, I need a notion for dummy’s video
Jade's video on Notion is a really great introduction - ruclips.net/video/67jFfjwUvRQ/видео.html (this is what got me hooked on it haha!)x
@@RubyGranger8 I’m actually half way through Jades video :)

what apps do you use to take notes on your iPad? i’ve been looking for some good one for a while
Oh I've just seen you have finished your Masters! Congratulations!!!
Hi, anyone who has notion- do u know if you can use accents from other languages and stuff? I tried it and it was not letting me. Also, can you use scientific diagrams and charts on there? It seems like its very much aimed at English lit.
It's not very versatile, it doesn't really let you use letters from different languages a lot of the time even...
