+Ari Hoptman Well, he was Viennese, so you can hear the typical dialect there, and, also him living in the US for such a long time at that time already, influenced his manner of speaking as well. With some words, the pronunciation has an English-coloring.

Yes, it's interesting that the American influence was so strong, especially given that in his early film career Stroheim wasn't required to talk. It seems that Schwarzenegger sometimes has similar "issues" when he speaks German these days. Henry Kissinger's pronunciation apparently remains in tact, though he always has to apologize when he speaks the language, noting that he stopped learning German vocabulary at about 15 years of age. :)

+Ari Hoptman Schwarzenegger sounds funny to me, in both English and German. When speaking English you hear the Austrian accent and influence, when he speaks German it's the opposite.
I checked Mr Kissingers German now, and you are right. That's interesting. It is also a matter of how often you still use your native language. I think Von used both languages maybe not equally, but regularly since there was a big community of Germans/Austrians in Hollywood during his time there. Anyhow, it's quite fascinating for me to hear some of my favorite Austrians/Germans in Hollywood speaking in their native language.

He spoke a lower class German, and had an American accent in both German and French. He was born in Vienna in 1885.
