The myth that John Gilbert had a uneven and tiny screen voice is completely absurd. His voice is fine and its definitely not because of the giggles of teenage girls. Thanks!

John Gilbert ... Wonderful actor, true star of silent cinema (together with my compatriot Rodolfo Valentino) ... It would have been with sound too, if someone had not plotted against him ...!
    ( ... sorry for my bad English ... )

Vincenzo Bufarale Your English is perfect! Yeah, sometimes my speaking is bad, I do speak English, since I'm a American, it's just the way how I talk, since some people can't understand what I'm saying, since I have autism, which it affects the tone, pitch, and sound of it, when I talk. Since my voice box is structured differently than most people. But otherwise, I understand what your saying in English, I know that English is not the best language but yours is great.

Aside from John Gilbert: The actor who portrays so nicely the silly ass character with the parlor trick is one Tyrell Davis, the same artist who portrayed Ernest, the fey dancing master who figures so crucially into the conclusion of "Our Betters" (1933). Looking at his bio, Davis was mighty busy in 1930s Hollywood.

After watching this clip, there was nothing wrong with Gilbert’s voice. What killed his career was the fact that he starred in poorly directed films.

Gilbert's career was completely sabotaged by Louis B Mayer because Gilbert punch Mayer after his remark about Greta Garbo, to him, he wanted to marry her. Mayer said to him, forget about her! Mayer's bodyguard separates Gilbert from Mayer. Mayer said to Gilbert, you will never work again even if it cost me a million dollars, true to his words.
