They say that Jean Arthur suffered terrible bouts of stage fright- even on her films. If that's true then consider how remarkable this scene is. There is a director and an entire film crew creating this shot- and Joel McCrae and Jean Arthur are so perfectly suited and intimate- that it's as though we're eavesdropping on them. Marvelous chemistry. Superb direction. Exquisite acting.
One of my favorite scenes ever; the conversation is so frivolous but perfectly executed. I especially like how Jean just trails off into nonsense speak when overcome with passion, simply brilliant on every element!
I love both these actors! They worked together I believe 3 times. This is quite the hot scene. These two were both such professionals and both such good actors. I love them together.
I like to think that when Joel McCrea kisses her neck, that Jean Arthur ISN'T acting. She's legitimately swooning. Also, I love to think the line, "He must be an important man." is totally ad-libbed. This is one of the hottest scenes from the Golden Age of Hollywood!
Jean looks fabulous ~ her dress is stunning. Excellent performance by both and so realistic and charming. This feeling is almost impossible to capture on film, but they aced it!
And what women did with their hair back then always hits me. Pulled up tight all the way 'round and that those curls on top... yummy. I love WWII history. Not a student of couture but shocked to see 1943 release movie with a woman wearing that eye-pleasing bare midriff outfit Jean, at 42, wears earlier in movie while seated and doing her. 🔥 🥵 🔥.
Thank you so much for posting! This has to be one of the sexiest scenes ever with so much charm and humor. And McCrea was so delightful as the all American good guy. Along with Jean Arthur's loveliness and flair for comedy the result is sublime. Love the little moment when she stumbles trying to go up the stairs after the kiss. I'm so happy to see this on youtube/
Thank you, you're welcome. I knew about that scene before, and that's why I watched the film in the first place. I really like Jean Arthur a lot, and this scene is absolutely stunning. I couldn't get it out of my mind for days. :)
Those outfits she wears and that hair, neck and shoulders. So restrained but yet steamy somehow. And the real sneaky scene (for men): the bare midriff scene early as she's sitting down holding her arms up doing hair stuff. Didn't know such was around in '43. The 42-yr old Miss Arthur was quite fit to agree to that scene...a SEATED bare belly, ribs scene.
this should be shown in all sex ed classes as the proper way for adults to act when they are courting, but then that might lead to some unexpected consequences. Three cheers for Jean Arthur, for portraying very well how we try to walk the line between our desires and our rationality. If the young only knew and the old only could.
After reading Jean Arthur s bio I realized she was definitely ahead of her time. I could of married a women like her! She was talented independent and caring. She had all the attributes of a great but understated woman, a rare combination of attributes.
Saw an interview with Joes McCrea talking of this movie. Both actors happily married, but Jean very nervous so Joel kept flirting with her throughout the filming to build her confidence up. I have always thought this was the very best love scene- light touch.
omg Jean Arthur. i had forgotten. exquisite, unique, true. she's telling us something so deep, so simple, so real. vulnerable intelligent feminine. her organizing principle is wit. such deft comic timing... and Joel, gentle generous partnering. what a sweet package.
I've fallen in love with that very scene _immediately_ when I watched the movie for the first time only recenty! Look just how their hands are "dancing"! This must be one of the most erotic scenes EVER, right?
This scene is amazing! The timing, sensual and funny at the same time. And Jean Arthur is so darn cute and sexy. Well, they’re both sexy. They shouldn’t be forgotten❣️
And she was a huge part of my fav film: "Shane," made six years later also by George Stevens (who requested specially that she come out of retirement for that movie...to play a 35 yr old woman - and just rocks it.)
Having already seen the lovely Miss Arthur opposite Messrs. Stewart and Cooper . . . I was absolutely mesmerized by this scene, the first of any portion of the film I had ever watched, in fact. It was pretty tough to figure out what the Sam Hill was goin’ on. Then that paranoid kid butts in. Love Chuck Coburn in this too. . . . Wondering whether Krissy McT ever got . . . her needs met. 😉 P.S. Obviously the Hays Office passed this scene because of how things turn out in the film. And it is made clear that they have already fallen deeply for each other, because there is a War going on, and then there’s the housing shortage and all . . . (sigh) . . .
Thanks for posting this. I was planning on wearing this dress for my wedding. I was hoping to find a clip to use for reference. It's so sexy without being trashy. I have been collecting and selling vintage clothing for years. In my opinion they don't make them like they used to unless of course you have millions to spend on couture. Thank You
This is 1 of my favorite movies, along with the Green Years starring Chas Coburn as the grandfather who is so loving to young orphaned Dean Stockwell and, sent from Ireland. And the other is him in The Devil and Miss Jones These 3 movies made him a favorite of mine. Him, Jean Arthur, and McCrea are top of my list of actors. I recommend these 👍🌟♥️🌟♥️🌟♥️
Talk about pushing buttons...human nature completely understood in this scene. The viewers. I was played like a fish. The William Powell mermaid film did the same thing to me.

Well they got on really well so it was probably easier for her to have these scenes with him
Oooo it would be SO easy to share these scenes with HIM!😍😍😋 ...Lucky, lucky Frances Dee!!
Watch his hands. From start to finish... the whole scene. Amazing moves.
Not hard for a man to do the hand acting part. She's gentle and lovely. That dress, ha it r, neck, shoulders. Yummy, Jean, yummy, m'dear. RIP.

I love when he said "I almost forgot where I lived." WOOF!
This scene is perfect! The chemistry between them is amazing. Jean is fabulous as always and Joel just makes my heart race. I need a man like that ;)
Joel McCrea is one of romantic comedy's most underrated actors
They don't make men like that anymore.
@@margaretjiantonio939 Yes they do. But, some of them don't have much money, or much education or a fancy job title. And too many women ignore them.
Sorry he was one of a kind. They don't men like that anymore.
I need a bucket of cold water.

Tallulah Hula I haven't been able to get it out of my mind for years :)
You've got some great clips so I'll subscribe....thanks again for sharing!
MrJeeves4me Thanks for the compliments! :)
Thanks for posting this scene. It's from one of my favorite movies and it's so sexy.
So much more effective and subtle than the more in your face style from a lot of modern films
I just watched this movie today on TCM. This seen pretty steamy, but also tasteful.
This is my favorite movie. I watch it over and over. Charles Coburn, Jean Arthur and Joel McCrae the perfect team, perfect script too.

Masterful...or mistressful! Delayed gratification at its best.
After reading Jean Arthur s bio I realized she was definitely ahead of her time. I could of married a women like her! She was talented independent and caring. She had all the attributes of a great but understated woman, a rare combination of attributes.
What bio did you read?

One of my favorite jean arthur movies ...
Which I do have in my dvd collection ...
And yes a very heated passionate scene indeed ...
Ugh, the butterflies 😻😻
When Joel and Jean sit on the steps, their making out is the sexiest romantic scene I’ve ever seen in a movie.

I am such a Jean Arthur fan !
Hormonal overwhelm.

Would have been fun to see them film that scene. Thank you.
One of my favorite movies.

I love Jean Arthur.
I bet most of you don't know Joel McCrea was 37 and Jean Arthur was 42! It sure doesn't feel like a scene with "middle age" people, does it? :)

“I better go.”
“Yeah, you go up and I’ll meet you there in about fifteen minutes.”
I love Jean rrthur.
This is called RHS. Roving hand syndrome. Delicious scene from a wonderful film.
Joel and Jean: under rated classic movie couple!
And who wouldnt wanna hold hands w Joel!!! Sighsssss 😍
He skipped the middle step!! Caught it😋 J o e l !!
He almost forgot where he lived.

Very sexy scene 🔥🔥🔥i love it 💞
Great erortic scene! loved it ! mmmmmmm
Great scene. You can feel the sexual heat simmering on the stoop as Carter moves in on the all-to-willing-to-oblige Connie.
