The reason having a real time piano input for speech synthesis doesn’t work suuuper well is because we typically sing the consonant just before the note, and leave the vowel to take up all the space. In the actual vocaloid program (and similar synths like openUTAU, CeVIO, and my personal fav SynthV) the consonant is inserted right before the midi note you fill in, but for that to happen in real time the piano would need to somehow predict your touch before you press the key. It’s still a really cool device though! Just might be hard to play since you need to be sliiightly off time.

Did you know that most countries have wonderful synths and hardware gadgets that nobody has ever heard of? Well, that is, except the creator, and their circles of people, of course.
it's vocaloid. Nobody ever heard of the synths version of it cause people that actually do make music in the genre use the software version like Vocaloid 5. It used to be even more janky. My girl Miku! Super excited to see you get into Vocaloid, there's so much cool music out there. The one thing I would say is that Vocaloid isn't so unique anymore! Just a bit of a guess as to how the controls on this gizmo work, when it comes to the language side of things. Japanese vowels are the "A, I, U ,E, O" sounds that we know in English, but consonants, are actually a vowel with another sound placed in front of it. So for example, you put a "K" and front and you now have "KA, KI, KU, KE, KO". Put an "M" and you now have "MA, MI, MU, ME, MO". The "shift" button is probably swapping between these sets.
Consonants aren't vowels with another sound placed in front of them. Consonants are that "another sound". In ka, 'k' is a consonant, 'a' is a vowel, and the unit they form together is called a mora.
There are actually a few producers, which use Miku's voice as normal instruments, but only for short periods, before the next part of the song kicks in.. I would have to use a couple hours to find those songs again.

Actually this synth instrument is based off an old synth from the late 60's called the Stylophone. A Stylophone is uniquely different from a Traditional synth like the Yamaha DX-7. It relies on the electroconductive keypad and a styles as the input for each keynote. While the DX-7 relies on a traditional piano keyboard and each key will toggle a switch to trigger the keynote input.
@@duncathan_saltThat said it’s extremely frustrating to watch him tap each note individually, and then pick up the pen, and then tap the next note, like a terrible keyboard. Stylophones have a unique glissando based playing style based on dragging the pen across the keyboard, which is evocative of a human voice even in its original primitive analogue form. Moreover, a traditional stylophone features an analogue master tuning knob on the back, which means you can easily tune to the key of the song and retain the “white key” glissando play style in any key. Based on this review video I have no idea how well this product works as an implementation of vocaloid on a stand alone stylophone based controller. For instance, this issue with certain vowels being out of time: what happens to the vowels when you glissando by dragging the pen from one key to the next is absolutely the main thing about this product, and it’s almost miraculously not featured in this video.
I love your content and I'm a long-time fan of Miku and the Vocaloid software as well (and of synths in general, ofc!)--what a delightful little gadget this is!!
David, I'm not sure if you'll see this on a 1y old video, but if you ever need to quickly translate foreign language text, you can use the Google Translate app's camera function. Select the original and desired languages, point the camera at the text, and the (crudely) translated text will show up on your phone screen. Certainly not a genuine substitute for a human translator, but works well enough in a pinch! Also, thanks for all of the great videos! Really love the channel.

puppycat was actually recorded using the vocaloid oliver! the vocaloid software (and other vocal synths) allows you to synthesize a melody and then simply type in syllables for each note. you can adjust pitch parameters and add growl, vibrato, and breath sounds as well. puppycat's voice is a pretty unorthodox use of the software, but the use of the software in songs has spawned a culture of its own. circusp did a stream recently showing his production process, so if you want to learn more, go check out his streams and listen to some of his songs!

Wow, This is like the next level version of the Korg Miku Stomp Pedal, sounds amazing too.
that chill little tune omg...I'm in love.
please make a 10 hour version on that!
Actually this synth instrument is based off an old synth from the late 60's called the Stylophone. A Stylophone is uniquely different from a Traditional synth like the Yamaha DX-7. It relies on the electroconductive keypad and a styles as the input for each keynote. While the DX-7 relies on a traditional piano keyboard and each key will toggle a switch to trigger the keynote input.
while the physical instrument is definitely based on a stylophone, the synthesizer software itself is certainly based on vocaloid
This is super unique and sounds very ethereal.
Got Glados and turret voice vibes (Portal). Love it + the melody is so catchy. Love everything in the video
adding the microcosm was brilliant. great video as always!
Totally agree with you on that. They definitely work well paired up for killer sounds. 👊🧡👍
2:55
Well… it is, a singing robot
can someone make a full song off of this specifically 3:50 and 4:08 I keep coming back to this video only for these parts alone
Me to
I didn’t think you could get any cooler 😭😭😭😭😭 I’m in love
Это прекрасно... Я очень скучаю по такому звучанию Мику, сейчас это уже что-то олдскульные. Звучит эфемерно, переносит на 12 лет назад
Sir, can we have the whole track from this part please? 2:37
Because it's sounds very calm, and relaxing.
This melody stuck in my head for long time!
Thank you in advance. 😁❤️
Yes please!
yo ur videos are amazing and you have 1 of the cleanest setups thank you!
Once upon a time, I made a "web app" to easily translate the japanese syllables to usable hex codes and then a Max/MSP plugin for Ableton to plug those into so I could sequence notes and syllables in real time in the DAW - still have it around somewhere I'm sure
This is a huge rabbit hole to go down. Good luck!
Getting big Portal turret voices vibe from this!
when miku started to sing that tune you've programmed. i kinda just sat there and smiled. it's so relaxing.
3:30 my girl miku turned into k.k. slider
Absolutely amazing video, very cool!
Dude, I want you to know what this specific video of yours just meant to me. Listening to you talking about sound across all this details and with such passion filled me with awe toward the sheer potential of the number of brilliant minds in the world, connected to different topics, and what they could achieve together.
You increased my hope in humanity, really. And I needed that. A thousand thanks.
Very cool. That microcosm is such a lush tool. Thanks for sharing!
The sounds it made with the pedal at first sound like the voice effect used for K.K. Slider in Animal Crossing when he sings. Very cool!❤
I came here for this xD
I NEED FULL VERSION 😭😭😭😭 this is such a gem
Over a million views, time for a sequel! For those of us who aren't quite as adept at MIDI, can you explain how you connected all these up and what (Mac?) software you were running to control it all? Bravo, though, one of the most informative and haunting videos on yt!
was wondering something vocaloid would come up but dident expect a whole video. thats sick
Welcome to Vocaloid! If you look past the mainstream songs and games, you'll find some really esoteric, fun soundscapes using her voice. And more!
I've been using Hatsune Miku Vocaloid v4x since that version came out. Love the ways you can tune her voice and can get her to sound damned near human. I don't know about using the keyboard to make her sing as I am use to programming syllable by syllable. Might be worth trying out. Nice vid and thank you for the info!
I had some Maria Carey ptsd when I thought you were playing her song at 2:00
I really love your videos, I love synthesizers but don't have the expendable income to buy any at the moment, so I like to live vicariously through you and your uploads!! Thank you!
It’s so expensive but it’s cheaper than buying the Vocaloid software and Miku’s voicebank
I bought one of these the last time I was living in Japan. Still never tried it. Loved this video. Thanks!
If you were able to read the manual you would have come across the draconian license agreement. It expressly forbids the use of the sound in any commercial recording.
woah! is that true!?? if so, that’s really nuts.
Big oof

Ohh mannn.. you got great works!! Thank you for sharing!!
Love that delay and reverb combo, was really pretty! 💙
this reminds me so much of the manner how Puppycat's voice was recorded in Bee and Puppycat. i wonder how they adapted the syllables to the keys
puppycat was actually recorded using the vocaloid oliver! the vocaloid software (and other vocal synths) allows you to synthesize a melody and then simply type in syllables for each note. you can adjust pitch parameters and add growl, vibrato, and breath sounds as well. puppycat's voice is a pretty unorthodox use of the software, but the use of the software in songs has spawned a culture of its own. circusp did a stream recently showing his production process, so if you want to learn more, go check out his streams and listen to some of his songs!
awesome self healing content, I love the sounds produce
Such a cool gadget. Like a 21st century stylophone (same stylus/metal keystrip but sounded awful even back in 1971). Very neat, looking forward to exploring the sample pack, thank you.
This is a triumph...making a note here, huge success...
Whenever I think vocaloids are done, something else comes around that makes me know they're still going strong
Thanks for these awesome videos!
If anyone here not familiar with vocaloid is interested in this, I highly suggest checking out some of the actual music people have made with the vocaloid software over the last 15 or so years. Miku used to be huge back in the day.
That reverb/delay pedal got my attention for sure wow
Please be careful with the library you created, I am not sure Yamaha might be mad because of the whole vocaloid situation and I don't want you getting sued or something
As a miku fan I’m so in love with this omg
I would love to hear a full version of 2:37. If anyone makes it, please link it to me.
count me in
Still searching :(
