I read the whole Deathstalker series and loved it. It's wildly imaginative everything-including-the-kitchen-sink space opera action adventure on a massive scale. Imagine Peter F. Hamilton but with 100% fewer business meetings and characters that don't go anywhere or do anything.
Oy! Jon, you did it again! Today, unfortunately, I got embarrassingly sucked into RUclips videos. But I was planning to get set into the Tainted Cup, for at least a few hours after dinner. Then you had to remind me of Saturn Rukh and Camelot 30k. I've been intrigued by those books for some time...Saturn Rukh was a must read since I love Meeting with Medusa by Clarke so much. I already knew the spoiler for Camelot 30k, but it should still be worth reading. I've downloaded both books, so I have to make a decision. 🙄😛🐶
Elder Race is a great little read that seems to encapsulate the famous Clarke saying “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” I've yet to be disappointed with Tchaikovsky's sci-fi and Elder Race is a quick read too.
A nice haul. I especially liked seeing The Midwich Cuckoos (not familiar with that cover). Spotted Blackout and All Clear by Connie Willis on your shelves! These were my joint books of the year a few years back. Still waiting for another Oxford Time Travel series instalment.
Some very nice hardbacks there Jon. Time to get your hard SF head on with those Robert L. Forward books! Most exciting find for me recently was a rather immaculate '83 Bantam of Bradbury's Golden Apples of the Sun. I don’t know if you were already planning this but an overview of how you found the books on that Broderick and Filippo could be interesting and how you think the books compare to the prior David Pringle list.
Hi, yes I will probably do a "progress" video, and ultimately I will do some sort of ranking video, but it is going to take me a good while to wade through them all. Thanks for watching 👀!
I’ve watched three videos so far after subbing today. I have already added a few books to my list, really interested in reading Helix. I’m currently reading the book series for the Halo video game franchise.
Yay, thank you for the sub and I'm glad you are busy wading through my back catalogue. There's lots to see and I guarantee there's plenty more book ideas for you to find. Thanks for watching 👀!
The Dark Forest h/b looks nice. I'm about to read the p/b edition, though it's a series that would be nice to have in h/b for future re-reads. "Permutation City" is worth reading, but it's still difficult Egan. If you want an "easy" Greg Egan read ""Zendegi" which doesn't really read like him!
I loved Saturn Rukh - good choice! Same goes for Cave of Stars by Zebrowski...one of the hi-lights of SF/100 Best/1985-2010 List, as far as my tastes go. Challenging SF; glad you tracked a nice copy down. One thing about having a favourite author is ending up liking their lesser-appreciated works a bit more than the next bookworm - so it's not surprising that I enjoyed The Ceres Solution as much as I did; Bob Shaw only really let me down with Vertigo and Shadow of Heaven.
As someone new to reading and collecting books any tips/strategies for shopping at used bookstores? I am not very familiar w many authors yet and get overwhelmed by all the choices😅 i never know how to browse efficiently or what to get lol. Sci fi and fantasy is what im most interested in
Ha, that is very familiar. When I started a couple of years ago I was like a magpie, I would grab any science fiction book regardless of condition or author or anything really. It has taken a while to get to point where I am more picky. I only buy books from charity or 2nd hand shop if in really nice condition, or if its one I'm particularly looking for. If I have a lot of books by a particular author but am yet to read any then I usually choose not to add more until I decide if I like them! Then I am trying to complete a set or a particular authors work or find books recommended by people, either directly or in lists of "best" books, there are several of those out there. There's still not a lot of method to my madness, but more than there used to be. Good luck and thanks for watching 👀!
@ haha glad to see its a common issue. Im trying to collect Asimovs books. The foundation series is usually all they have in main stream stores like barnes and noble but i find the covers boring so im trying to get them from second hand shops. I just found The Stars Like Dust and Robots and Empire last month. Love the channel and thanks for the tips!
Maybe a naive question, due to me being mainly a paperback owner, but do you manufacture the dust jacket‘s protective plastic sheet yourself or is this something you can buy?
I bought a 5kg roll of 30 micron plastic film from a packaging supply company here in the UK. Cost me about £30. Works a treat and it will last me ages, I've hardly made a dent in it and I've covered almost all my hardback books now. Thanks for watching!
OOooo That is a sign of a great bookseller, who remembers, that you were looking for The Midwich Cuckoos and bothered to hold it for you.
Yep, and "just" a volunteer in a charity bookshop. I was chuffed. Cheers Beky, thanks for watching 👀!
Deathstalker is such a fun read. The rest of the books in the series I have read are really entertaining too.
i'm looking forward to getting to it at some point, hopefully soon! thanks for watching 👀!
Fracassi is best know for his horror but he has a anthology of sci-fi stories. Pretty good cover :) thank you for this
Ah interesting, and thanks for watching 👀!

Sounds great! I do like a good space opera. Thanks for watching 👀!
Yeah I second that. It’s pretty ridiculous fun. I listened to the Graphic Audio version which was great!

Fab, enjoy those, and thanks for watching 👀!

Oh good, look forward to reading that at some point. Cheers Bobby, thanks for watching 👀!

I LOVED Blackout and All Clear, also among my faves a couple of years back. Thanks for watching 👀!
A lot of those sound quite interesting
Jolly good, thanks for watching 👀!
New book headed your way!
Ooh how exciting, thank you so much! Very kind of you. 👍📚
Arrived! Thank you!
@@SciFiScavenger Excellent! Hopefully the die of destiny puts it on your TBR soon!
I read "Karla's Choice" over Xmas, but I didn't know Harkaway wrote SF! I'll look out for his SF in future.
Gnomon is one of his better known sf books.
Some very nice hardbacks there Jon. Time to get your hard SF head on with those Robert L. Forward books!

@ I love to find a new channel, then I get to binge watch new video, but also find new books/authors

Turns out I'm a sucker for a pretty book. Who knew!? Thanks for watching 👀!
Gone Away World is a brilliant novel, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise 😂 read it years ago and I still think about it. Highly imaginative.
Good to know! Thanks Michael, and thanks for watching 👀!
Elder Race is outstanding. It does quite a bit with differences in perception and language.
Absolution had great parts, but I was disappointed.
Interesting, ok, I have heard mixed reports about Absolution. Cheers Montie, thanks for watching 👀!
Nice copy of The Dervish House. 😊
Yes! I was sure I'd bought UK 1st, but seems not. Cheers Kris, thanks for watching 👀!

Hi Seth, jolly good, pleased to have scored some gooduns. Thanks for watching 👀!

It's good to watch sci fi booktube channels, you'll get plenty of book recommendations you'll want to chase down.

Thanks a lot for that link. A new project arises on the horizon 😁
Karla's choice isn't very good but it's better than Gone away world which was unreadable.
In positive frame of mind then!? 😀 thanks for watching 👀!
