Behavior Chains: Are You Teaching Your Dog to be Bad to be Good? #42

  • What if I were to tell you that your dog’s worst behavior could very likely be there because you have been unintentionally reinforcing it? It might be your dog jumping on guests, barking, getting on the furniture, counter surfing, not wanting to leave the park, lunging, not bringing back a ball. All of these frustrations and many others are things you could be accidentally rewarding your dog for doing. How does this happen? It’s got everything to do with behavior chains.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    • How to recognize a behavior chain and how they work.
    • About the reinforcement of social attention for dogs.
    • How your words can be associated with rewards.
    • About your dog and patterns of reinforcement.
    • How your dog learns “gotta be bad to be good”.
    • Why your dog doesn't want to leave the park.
    • The ways to fix your inadvertent behavior chains.
    • How important reinforcement is and why treats are just one form.
    • The example of a simple behavior being turned into a chain with repeated cues.
    • How to set up your dog for success.
    • About rehearsing the correct end of a behavior chain.

Thanks so much for this you've confirmed something I had been thinking about. I've been realising that I have started reinforcing some "bad" behaviour using the cue "off". My pup was reliably dropping the tug toy when I gave the cue and I reinforced with more tugging when he sat and waited for me to start the game again. Then somehow he seemed to stop reliably dropping the toy when i asked.
I'm thinking i had poisoned it by using it when he had jumped on the furniture and I had said off & then given him social reinforcement for getting off. Reckon I've got to keep the "off" cue just for the dropping of a toy and not reward the behaviour of jumping on the furniture.
I also used the off cue yesterday when he started to chew my hoodie while he was sitting on my knee and thought at the time I need to be careful/ more intentional about using this word. So thanks a lot for this video. it's been really helpful!

There are several times during Susan‘s podcast when she is describing the humans incorrect behavior and comments and I will say to myself good grief. Susan must be looking through her magic crystal ball again because that was me this morning on my walk with my three dogs. Always makes me laugh. They do say that recognizing that you have a problem is the first step? We are all a work in progress. Thank you for the delightfuly fun and informative videos.

Thanks! I've watched many of your videos and they're super helpful.
How do I back chain (or fix) behaviour at the end of a training session. My 15 week old lab is great during training then I say "okay" or "break" to signal it's over and he jumps and nips. He's clearly made the wrong association because of something I've done and wants more treats.

Hello, how about the crazy barking at the door or window when somebody approach? Of course we've been sayin « no,no, no, stop it, etc. » a 1000 times so I guess we reinforce the bad behavior. I tried also to ask them to go to their mat...it works sometimes but not always... any advice on that specific behavior B: we do not use crates (they are 7 and 2 yeras old)

Hi! Do you have any ideas for when the desired end behavior is highly situational? We have a 8 month old puppy and I've had the suspicion that just saying 'leave it' when he gets overly sniffy with our cats has been a part of a behavior reinforcement chain. However my desired end result depends on context, because one of my cats really likes interacting with the dog and I would like the puppy to eventually be able to give the cat a quick gentle sniff to say hi. My other cat, however, would rather not. Not sure if that is possible or if I have to just train him to act as if the cats don't exist. Thank you for the awesome content, I'm on the alert list for recallers!

  • @EricaEteson

So for a dog that's trying to jump up on couch, instead of saying OFF, you would escort her over to her crate or some other part of the room? Why isn't that physical contact more reinforcing then sternly saying OFF? My puppy whimpers a little when I say OFF -- she clearly doesn't like it -- and then she either stays off or might try one or 2 more times to jump up and then gives up. Of course, I'd love to get it down to one time:-)

  • @jakeb1778

If a cue is trained to fluency can it be used sparingly to stop unwanted behaviors without reward? For example if my dog had a habit of pulling to sniff or planting on the ground and I have a solid "lets go" can/ should I use it without rewarding upon completion?
Obviously, this would have to be used sparingly or risk poisoning or having the cue loose value..

    Minor infodump incoming:
Yeah, I started to realize this about my rescues barking at sounds outside. I was trying to tell her it was okay, I was trying to get her to come to me and (break the barking) and get rewarded, so I noticed that she was barking to get rewarded for being quiet. So now we're trying to ignore her entirely when she barks, as I'm also starting Home School the Dog, and I think the games there will imensely improve our relationship and hopefully the barks will get lower.
I noticed she settles a lot quicker already on the first day. I did drop some letters into the wall to wall neighbours though, so they know we're training her for a while.. No pressure!

    • @rockyandmiles9889
      @rockyandmiles9889 Год назад

Has ignoring the barking worked? Mylo will bark til the sun goes down! Ignoring is not an option for me! I need to make it stop and rewards for stopping seem to be the only way, which is likely causing him to do it more. It’s a viscous cycle. He’s very smart too

Behaviour chains are such an underrated aspect of dog training!! My dog used to jump on people and at one point in his training he used to jump up and smack people in the groin and THEN sit for cuddles :P that's when I realised I had reinforced a chain. I had to break the chain before he got to step one by giving him a chicken wrapped mini rawhide every time guests came over (before I opened the door) and I knew that worked when he heard the doorbell and ran to the treat cabinet instead of the door.

I wonder if these comments are still monitored.. I have an issue with "back", dog stops after a few steps. To teach them to backup to infinite, I suppose you have a "break" command and the dog backs up until the break, right?
Can you either direct me to a video on break or on another video to help on the backup to infinity? I try to think what can make backing up more attractive than stopping but it's not something he does on his own and that I can reward easily (like when a dog doesn't jump on guests from being in a pen!).

Looking so foward. 2 years ago, my Lab , Sandy, passed away. She was 16 years old- my constant companion through life's ups and downs. I never thought I would get another dog, but my children bought this puppy for my 50th birthday. A very very special gift.Thank you for excellent advice.

Have loved listening to you talk about behavior chains! I see them happening in our house, but I'm not always sure how to prevent or escape them. For example, with puppy biting, I follow the protocol of freeze, vocalize, praise calmly, stoke a suggested in video 17... but my puppy is usually biting trying to initiate play. So I'm afraid that petting him when he bites like this is really creating a behavior chain where he bites and then gets pet. We have similar situations where a bad behavior is happening, and I'm not sure how long I need to wait to praise a good behavior after that without it becoming a reinforced chain. I'm really interested in your thoughts on this, Susan!

    • @DogsThat
      @DogsThat  3 года назад

Great observation Annie, if you rewatch and download the PDF Transcript you will see through each part of Susan's steps she is evaluating the dogs next behaviours. The question is if the puppy is settled and using self control to not come back is the opportunity to calmly praise... using voice to see if that brings the puppy back in...next decision is good to hold off coming in you can reach to pat. It's all a process - and layers but you 'seeing this' as a potential chain is excellent. Lynda (TeamSusan)
